Two Jews On War Horse

War Horse Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz Albert (Jeremy Irvine) a young boy, who lives on a rented farm in Devon with his mom (Emily Watson) and his dad (Peter Mullen). Albert has a horse named Joey and Joey...is one awesome horse and the family couldn't be happier. Until... WW! breaks out, and poor Joey is sold to the British cavalry and shipped off to France. Luckily this really nice British officer (Tom Hiddleston) promises the devastated Albert, that he will take wonderful care of Joey and do everything in his power, to bring the horse back to him. In one piece of course. But as luck would have it, the kindly officer is killed in battle and Joey, well...he goes on one hell of an adventure. Joey becomes BFF with another horse...winds up fighting on both sides of the War...hangs out with a sickly, young girl and her grandfather (straight out of Heidi) gets his horse-heart broken and eventually winds up...(Spoiler Alert) back where it all began. Sounds heartwarming, right?...Well, not that much. 'War Horse' directed by Steven Spielberg, is based on the award winning play of the same name. The play is based on a children's book, written by Michael Morpurgo. This extraordinary theatre piece took over five years to put together, before it opened at the Royal National Theatre in London. 'War Horse' then went on to Broadway, where it won several awards including the Tony for Best Play and Best Director. 'War Horse' was dubbed the theatrical event of the decade. What ...

Two Jews On Moneyball

Moneyball Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz First thing I must say is...I basically know nothing about sports. I do watch the Super Bowl but only for the commercials. That said, I absolutely loved 'Money Ball'. Which goes to prove, that you don't have to be a baseball fan, to think that this film, written by Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillan and directed by Bennett Miller, is absolutely wonderful. Brad Pitt portrays real life Baseball legend, Billy Beanne. I'm sure there are many people out there that have no idea who Mr. Beanne is...I being one of them. But I do now. Beanne, once a promising baseball player, is the General Manager of the Oakland A's. But not just any General Manager. When 'Moneyball' begins Brad Pitt says...'There are rich teams...There are poor teams...Then there is us'. The year is 2002. The Oakland A's has a payroll of 40 million dollars...while the Yankees's payroll is $126 million. More money buys better players. Billy Beanne has to find a competitive advantage when it comes to assembling a winning team. He doesn't have alot of cash...but what he does have is...Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) a Harvard graduate with a degree in economics. So what the hell does Peter know about baseball?. Turns out plenty. Brand used statiscal data to analyze the value of a baseball player. He was able to see what the Scouts couldn't...What a player did last year, was not what he'd do the following year. Sound boring? Trust me...It's not. Billy Beanne changed the face of ...

Two Jews On Melancholia

Melancholia Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz When 'Melancholia' directed by the always controversial, Lars Von Tier, opens...there is a montage of impressionistic stills set to Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde... Dead birds slowly rain down from the sky, while Kirsten Dunst, dressed in a long, flowing white wedding gown, wearing a dazed expression on her face, runs through a lush, dark forest...A horse silently falls to the ground as the opera reaches a crescendo...Then we cut to... Somewhere in Outer Space, where we see Earth and a much larger planet, gradually moving closer and closer to one another...The planet is blue and it's name is...'Melancholia'. This montage is breathtaking and it goes on for over eight minutes...and that is how this haunting, disturbing, stunningly beautiful film begins. I guess you can tell, I absolutely loved this movie. 'Melancholia' is broken up into three acts. The first part is called 'Justine', (played brilliantly by Kirsten Dunst). Justine, a rising advertising executive, has just married Michael (Alexander Skarsgard). When we meet them, they are being chauffeured to their wedding reception in a stretch limo and....they are over two hours late. Their tardiness really pisses off Justine's sister, Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her scientist hubby, John (Kiefer Sutherland). You can't really blame them...Afterall, they are the ones throwing this super expensive, super lavish, super pretentious, party for the newly married couple. When ...

Two Jews On Straw Dogs

Straw Dogs Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz You are a Hollywood screenwriter. You have a hot wife and a hot Jag. You move to your wife's hometown in the Deep South after her father's death. It's filled with God fearing, Bambi killing, football addicted, good ole Southern boys. Do you really think you'll live happily ever after? David Sumner (James Marsden) and his actress wife Amy (Kate Bosworth) move to her father's house so David can get some quiet and solitude to complete the World War 2 screenplay he's working on. But all is not as bucolic as it seems in Blackwater, Mississippi...Is it ever? Once there, Amy slips back into being the hometown celebrity (see what starring in a TV show can do) which leaves poor David feeling out of touch with his wife and questioning her behavior. David, trying to be a nice guy, hires Amy's ex-boyfriend, Charlie (the super hot, Alexander Skarsgard, from 'True Blood') to replace the roof on their barn. Charlie brings along his crew of red neck mutants who happen to also be his former football teamates. When the crew start to walk into the main house and help themselves to beer, things start to get tense between David and the homies. It also doesn't help that Amy runs around braless and in tight short, shorts in front of the guys. Adding to the mix Tom Heddon, aka Coach (James Woods) He spends his time at the local bar pissed off at everything and everyone...The Coach's biggest target is Jeremy Niles (Cominic Purcell) a mentally ...

Two Jews On The Descendants

Movie Review-The Descendants By Joan Alperin-Schwartz When 'The Descendants' directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways) started, I really expected to love it. I mean, the film is set in Hawaii, there's a woman in a coma, and it stars George Clooney. Unfortunately, I had quite a different experience. I didn't hate this film, but I did find my mind wandering...thinking about my overweight dog who needs to go on a diet...Definitely not a good sign. Okay, so here's the story...George Clooney plays, Matt King. Matt is married but not the greatest of husbands. He has two children...but not the greatest of fathers... Matt is your typical clueless, workaholic. Besides being a lawyer, he's is the trustee of 25000 acres of untouch land on the island of Kauai, left to him and his many cousins by their ancestors. Now, a greedy developer (is there any other kind) wants to buy the land and build all those things that greedy developers build on pristine land. When his wife gets into a boating accident and falls into a coma, Matt soon finds his neat little world spinning out of control. He has to very quickly figure out how to become a dad to his two kids. This proves problematic, since his oldest daughter, (Shailene Woodley) is really pissed off at him after years of neglect. Plus, Matt has to find a way to tell his youngest daughter, Scottie (Amara Miller) that her mother won't be waking up. If that's not enough to stress him out, Matt's cousins are pressuring him to sell the land to the ...

Two Jews On Our Idiot Brother

Film Review - Our Idiot Brother By Joan Alperin-Schwartz Paul Rudd is Ned Rochlin, an organic farmer, who sees the good in everyone. So when a policeman comes up to him at a local Farmers Market and begs Ned to sell him some weed, he's only to happy to oblige. Afterall, Ned felt sorry for the cop, who said he was suffering from job-related stress. Now what does Ned get for this act of compassion? He gets busted and sent to prison, of course. Afterall, this is a comedy... After a few months in jail, Ned is released for good behavior. When Ned returns home to his farm, where he lived with his girlfriend, Janet (Kathryn Hahn) and his beloved dog...Willie Nelson, he finds out, that not only does Janet have aa new boyfriend, but she's keeping, Willie Nelson. This hurts Ned even more than the break-up. So now that Ned is homeless and dogless, he has no choice but to move back to his childhood home in Long Island, where his sweet mother, Irene (Shirley Knight) welcomes him with open arms. At the weekly family dinner, we get to meet Ned's three sisters: First, there's uber mom, Liz (Emily Mortimer) who is married to the pompous, Dylan (Steve Coogan) a documentary filmmaker with an ostentatiously humanitarian ethos and a tidy trust fund, along with their seven year old son, River (Matthew Mindler) and baby daughter, Echo. Two Jews On J. Edgar

J. Edgar -Film ReviewBy Joan Alperin-Schwartz Every once in awhile, you experience a performance by an actor that simply blows your mind...And that's exactly what happened to me, when I watched Leonardo DiCaprio portray J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's new film, 'J. Edgar'. What makes a great performance are the subtle things an actor does...things that inform the character...a gesture, a look, body language, the tilt of the head...and DiCaprio obviously understands this...Because he absolutely nails the part. Equally brilliant, is Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Clyde Tolson, Hoover's long time companion, second in command at the FBI and perhaps...his lover. For me, I found their relationship the most interesting aspect of this film. Okay so anyone can google J. Edgar Hoover and get a slew of facts about the man as well as contrary opinions regarding his sexuality. But one thing is for sure... J. Edgar Hoover was a monster...a blackmailing, lying, egotistical, cunning, sexually repressed, control freak who was badly in need of a good shrink. All you have to do is observe the interaction between J. Edgar and his mother, (the wonderful, Judi Dench) and you'll understand where J. Edgar got his insanity from. Mother Hoover was a super religious, dominating woman, who brought up her boy to believe that he was a God. In all fairness, J. Edgar was quite intelligent. He came up with some of the most innovative crime fighting techniques that the FBI still uses today. And ...

Two Jews On Sherlock Holmes:Game Of Shadows

'Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows' Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz The year is 1891. The place is England...And something really, really bad is about to happen throughout the land....Well to be precise, France and Germany...And there's only one man that can stop this very, very bad thing...Actually, one man plus several helpers. Anyway, the man of course is Sir Conan Doyle's famous dectective, Sherlock Holmes. Okay...So we have anarchists setting off bombs... and people are getting tense. Can you blame them? Then the Crown Prince Of Austria is found dead and the evidence points to suicide. But Sherlock (Robert Downey Jr.) deduces that the Prince has been the victim of murder...And that his murder is just a small piece of a much larger puzzle, that eventually will lead to war between France and Germany. And the man behind the bombings and the Prince's murder...None other than the very diabolical, very brilliant, and very evil, Professor Moriarty (Jared Allen) aka Sherlock Holmes nemesis and arch enemy. Of course, Holmes is the only man, clever enough to stop the Professor, from carrying out his masterplan and luckily, he doesn't have to do it alone. That's right, his trusted bff and sidekick, Dr. Watson (Jude Law) is with him every step of the way...Despite the fact, that he's on his honeymoon, having just married the lovely Mary (Kelly Reilly) and he's own his . . Two Jews On Real Steel

Real Steel Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz The year is 2020. Things look pretty much the same as they do now...Except in the world of boxing. Humans have evolved to the point where they no longer get excited by watching men and women pummel each other. Score one for us. What we have instead is 'Robot Boxing' which I have to say is...really, really cool...especially the way it's depicted in this new fantasy, action film, called 'Real Steel' directed by Shawn Levy. First of all, these 'robot boxers' aren't your everyday garden variety robots. These animatronic, mechanical men are over 8 feet tall, made of steel and each one, has his own very unique personality. And wow, can they box. When 'Real Steel' opens, we meet, Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) a washed up fighter who finds himself in a world where he doesn't fit in. No longer a boxer, Charlie makes his living hustling. He travels from one seamy underground boxing venue to the next, scoring fights for his low-end bots that he's pieced together. After his last robot gets destroyed at a County Fair boxing match, run by super sleavy ex boxer/promoter, Ricky (the wonderful Kevin Durand) Charlie desperately needs money...not only to buy another robot, but to pay off his gambling debts. Charlie makes his way to Tallet's gym and to his girlfriend, Bailey Tallet. Her father trained Charlie back in the day...Now she helps him rebuild his robots and rest his weary bones, whenever he comes into town. Only this time, Bailey has ...

Two Jews On Rise Of The Planets Of The Apes

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes- Film Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz What makes 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' so unique is that it's the first live-action film to be told from the point of view of a sentient animal -- A chimpanzee--named Caesar...brilliantly portrayed by Andy Serkis, the world's foremost performance capture actor. Andy infuses Caesar with nuance, wisdom and most importantly... heart. 'Rise Of The Planets Of The Apes' is an origin story, in the truest sense of the word. It shows us what happens, when experiments in genetic engineering, leads scientists to produce an intelligent ape. The film is a cautionary tale that blends scifi with science. And thanks to the Rupert Wyatt's excellent direction along with the great story telling of Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffee, this movie scores on all levels. At its heart, 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' is a character driven piece. It's about humanity's hubris - our arrogance in thinking that we can twist, push, cheat or circumvent the laws of nature without consequence. In the original 'Planet Of The Apes', Col. Taylor (the late Charleton Heston) stands on the beach, facing the Statue Of Liberty and discovers that he's been on Earth the whole time and that the apes...have indeed taken over the planet. In 'Rise Of the Planet Of the Apes', we find out...how this event came to pass. Two Jews On My Week With Marilyn

'My Week With Marilyn' Film Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz When the film 'My Week With Marilyn' directed by Simon Curtis, begins...we see Marilyn Monroe on a stage singing 'That Ole Black Magic'...That's who I thought it was, anyway. It actually took me a few seconds before realizing that I was watching not Monroe, but Michelle Williams...That's how good she is in her portrayal of the damaged, insecure, extremely sensual, extremely vulnerable Hollywood icon/sex symbol known as...Marilyn Monroe. Or to put it simply, Michelle William's performance blew me away. And the rest of the film is pretty wonderful as well. 'My Week With Marilyn' is based on two memoirs by documentary filmmaker, Colin Clark. The year is 1957 and Colin (Eddie Redmayne) 23, has a dream...to make movies. So Colin says goodbye to his super wealthy family, leaves his super sized mansion in the country and heads for London. As soon as the charming Colin arrives, he uses his powers of persuasion to finagle a job with Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) The job...Working as his 3rd assistant director...aka a goofer...on the film 'The Prince And The Showgirl' which Olivier is not only starring in, but directing as well. Oh, and the female star just happens to be... Miss Marilyn Monroe. Two Jews On Midnight In Paris

Movie Review know critics are supposed to be objective (if that's even possible) but in the case of Woody Allen's new film, 'Midnight In Paris' it's going to be really hard. I thought it was one of the most beautiful, original, magical and romantic films I've seen in a very long time. It completely grabbed my heart. The film opens with images of Paris...beautiful, moving images. The lights of the city, the empty streets, the gardens, museums, cafes, flea markets, parks and cathedrals. The montage goes on for quite a while...No actors...just visuals of this magnificent city.... And then we meet Gil (Owen Wilson) and his finance Inez (Rachel McAdams). They are in Paris with Inez's uptight Republican/Tea Party parents, Helen (Mimi Kennedy) and John (Kurt Fuller). Helen and John are the 'ugly' in Ugly Americans. Gil is a Hollywood screenwriter who had aspirations to be a novelist when he was younger. He idolized American writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Gil lived in Paris when he was in his twenties and has a major romantic attachment to the city. It represents a time when his professional life was just beginning. Now being back here, he's confronted with the road he didn't take..Instead of being a serious novelist, Gil sold out to...Hollywood. He writes bad screenplays and makes major bucks. This makes him very unhappy...However it makes Inez...extremely happy. She likes expensive things... Gil hasn't completely given up on his dream. He is in the middle of writing a ...

Two Jews On Water For Elephants

Movie Review 'Water For Elephants directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Richard LaGravenese is based on the best selling novel of the same name. The book written by Sara Gruen was on the New York Best Seller list in 2006 for over 12 weeks. The film takes place during the Great Depression...1930's...a time when people needed desperately to escape their world of poverty...People needed a place where they could experience wonder, magic and even a little danger. And they found that under...The Big Top. And so did veterinary student Jacob (Robert Pattison) Jacob is just about to graduate from Cornell Veterinary College when he gets side-tracked by a tragic accident. Leaving everything he ever knew or cared about, Jacob hops on a train and finds himself transported to what seems like a magical place...A place where he can forget all his pain...a place where he can be accepted....The Benzini Bros Circus. It's here, Jacob meets and falls deeply in love with Marlena, the beautiful, star performer of Benzini Bros and the wife of circus owner and ringmaster...August, (Christopher Waltz). August is a man who is charming, intelligent and charismatic. He's also a twisted, violent tyrant who will stop at nothing to get what he wants..even if it means throwing non essential personal off of a moving train to their death. 'Water for Elephants is a story of love, hope, redemption, second chances at finding happiness. This is what I'd call...An old fashioned epic film. The movie is ...

Two Jews On Larry Crowne

Larry Crowne Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz Once upon a time, a Hollywood actor named Tom decided to write a film about a middle aged average guy who loses his job, goes to college, makes some new friends, joins a motor scooter gang, gets a makeover, and has his house foreclosed on...and...in case I forgot to mention...He meets an alcholic college Professor who looks very much like Julia Roberts. They of course fall in love and live happily ever after. Don't worry...I'm not spoiling anything. You know that's going to happen the minute Tom walks into Julia's class. Not only did Tom Hanks write this film along with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) but he directed it as well. All I can say is...This is Hollywood pablum at its worst. Tom plays Larry Crowne. Larry gets fired from his job, because it turns out...he never went to college. So Crowne enrolls in the local community college...Takes a couple of courses...meets a group of very cool and very goodlooking people, all under the age of 25, joins their little motor scooter gang, and he finds out...it's never too late to be happy. Seriously??? Julia Roberts is Mercedes, the alcholic, extremely unhappy, college professor. Of course she's unhappy. Mercedes is married to a writer (Brian Cranston) who doesn't write. He's too busy looking at porn all day on his computer. On top of that, poor Mercedes hates her job. Her first class is at 8:00 AM. Guess she isn't a morning person. Two Jews On Anonymous

Movie Review-Anonymous By Joan Alperin-Schwartz Yes...'Anonymous' is a political thriller, but it's one that is set in the past...400 years ago to be precise. The film, directed by Roland Emmerich and written by John Orloff (took him 15 drafts to get it right) supports the premise that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, (Rhys Ifans)a prominent aristocrat, was the real author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare. Sounds dull? Believe me, it's anything but. Whether you agree with the premise or not, 'Anoymous' is an exciting, sexy, suspensful, exquisitely acted and intriguing film...One that will make you think and question. When 'Anonymous' opens, we found ourselves in the present. A scholar, (Sir Derek Jacobi) gets out of a taxi, rushes into a theater and steps onto a stage. He looks out at the audience and announces that...'William Shakespeare never wrote a single word'. That in fact, Shakespeare was illiterate. He says a few other things as well and then... We are whisked back in time...to the early 17th century when England was an empire and she was ruled by Elizabeth 1 (Vanessa Redgrave) The Virgin Queen...who was anything but a virgin. 'Anonymous' is not only a thriller but a complex one...with many, many players and lots of flashbacks and flashforwards. This makes it imperative that you pay very close attention to what's happening on the screen. If you take a bathroom break, you'll be lost. Besides the above mentioned Queen Elizabeth and the 17th ...

Two Jews On The Tree Of Life

Film Review - The Tree Of Life The Big Bang...Creation...Evolution...God...Life... Death...Family...These are the themes that Terrence Malick addresses in his brilliant new film, 'The Tree Of Life'. In my humble opinion, this is one of the most original films in cinematic history. It is also a film that will divide people...Some will absolutely hate it, some will be angered by it and some like myself, will absolutely love it. For almost one hour into this film none of the actors on screen speak to one another. You hear them only in voice over. Their voices bleed into the soaring classical orchestral score. They say a word, a sentence...a whisper. We see the beautiful face of Mrs O'Brien (Jessica Chastain) Mr. O'Brien (Brad Pitt)...Their three young boys; Jack (Hunter McCracken), RL (Laramie Eppler) and Steve (Tye Sheridan) ... There's the sound of the wind and the moving pictures...the sun, rustling trees, a hand, faces, a family...a life and a death. The mother cries out, 'Lord, why? Where are you?' and What are we to you?" And then...Another symphony of sounds and the screen fills with a spectacular light show...A loud blast in the cosmos, volcanic explosions, fire and water, creation, one cell, then two...They multiply... organisms...jellyfish and the dinosaurs. Evolution... And then we're back to the O'Brien's. They live in a small Texas town and it's the 1950"s. Mr. O'Brien is a stern, dominareering, ex military man. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2

Movie Review -Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 By Joan Alperin Schwartz 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows-Part 2 is the final adventure in the 'Harry Potter' series. The film is directed brilliantly by David Yates and cleverly adapted for the screen by Steve Klos. This is not only the last film in the franchise, but it is the best. From the first shot...where we see Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) holding his sword up to the darkened sky, followed by Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) staring out into the gloomy courtyard at Hogwarts, you know...you're in for one great ride. For those of you who haven't read the books (if that's even possible) here's what's happening...more or less. The Dark Lord aka Voldemort, now has the Elder Wand (that's the mother of all wands) and things are very very bad, for bascially anyone, that's not an 'evil doer'. Voldemort and his Death Eaters (no, they're not a heavy metal band) are about to take over the entire wizarding world. But luckily for the muggles, Harry (Daniel Ratcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are not going to let that happen. They set out on a quest to find and destroy the remaining three horcruxes that contain pieces of Voldemort's soul. Their journey takes them to cavernous deadly vaults, Gringotts Bank, to the halls of Hogwarts...Well basically to a lot of places...where the trio face danger, monsters, and really nasty people. Voldemort and Harry are in the ultimate battle between good and evil ...

Two Jews On Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close-Film Review

Movie Review-Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close By Joan Alperin Schwartz 9/11...All you have to do is say that date and most people will have a reaction...usually an emotional reaction...And for me, that emotion is one of saddness...for the senseless loss that so many people experienced. And now, ten years after that infamous day, Stephen Daltry has directed a beautiful, moving film about...loss. 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' stars first time actor, Thomas Horn. He plays the young boy Oskar, trying to come to terms with his father's death on 9/11. What's amazing about Thomas, is that just like the character Oskar, he too has Asperger's Syndrom. Horn is in every scene of this film and he's absolutely riverting. Apparently Scott Rudin saw him on the tv game show Jeopardy and cast him in the part. I'm sure there's more to the story, but in any case, Thomas Horn definitely, if he chooses, has a great future ahead of him as an actor. 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' is many things...A mystery...a family drama, a quest...even at times, a comedy, but in the end, this is a film about the relationship between a father (Tom Hanks) and his adoring son. A year after his father's death in the Twin Towers, Oskar is still ridden with guilt and pain from his loss. One day, he finds a key in his dad's closet...And it's this key, that takes Oskar on an odyssey to discover the lock that the key fits. And of course, he winds up finding something much more profound than he ever could ...

Two Jews On Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch' directed by Zach Snyder (Watchmen, 300) stars Emily Browning as Baby Doll, a girl who meets tragic circumstances in the 1950's. The film opens with Baby Doll witnessing the murder of her mother and sister by her wicked step father...One look at his face and you can tell...this is a very bad man. Baby Doll manages to get her hands on a gun. She aims it at Stepdaddy-dearest but instead of doing the smart thing and shooting the evil creep, she drops the pistol and flees her mansion. Not the best move...Her stepfather convinces the Police that Baby Doll is the one who murdered her mom and sis and that she's insane. Stepdad carts Baby Doll off to an insane asylum right out of medieval England and makes a deal with one of the orderlies to have his sweet stepdaughter lobotomized. This is the 50's after all. That's what they did to annoying women back then. What's a girl to do under these circumstances? Create an alternative reality of course where she can be a Samurai super warrior chick who can kick some serious ass. Along with her fellow inmates, Rocket (Jena Malone), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung) these girls fight Nazis, dragons, alien robots, and some really ugly monsters. Scott Glen is along for the ride as the Wise Man. He leads the girls on their various missions. Also in the cast is Carlo Gugino as Dr. Vera Gorski, a kindly doctor/Ballet Mistress/Madame. The film is too silly for anyone to think it has some kind ...

Two Jews On Cars 2

Cars 2 Movie Review By Joan Alperin Schwartz 'Cars 2 is the new 3D wonder from director John Lasseter. John and his crew at Pixar have once again proven why they are the best at what they do. To really enjoy this film, you have to put aside any ideas that cars can't talk, can't have friends and girlfriends, can't experience human emotions and can't be killer spies. (Something the other half of Two Jews On Film, John my husband, wasn't able to do). Anyway, the story goes like this...Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is the snazzy, red, highly acclaimed racing car. After winning four Piston cups, Lightning is finally back home in Radiator Springs and all he wants to do is spend time with his girlfriend Sally, (Bonnie Hunt) a super hot, baby-blue, Porsche 911 Carrera and hang with his best friend Mater (Larry The Cable Guy). For those of you who haven't seen the first 'Cars', Mater is a rusted, dented, buck tooth, Tow Truck and owner of Tow Mater Towing and Salvage. Mater is down home country...naive, sweet and totally unassuming. He would do anything for Lightning...and he does. Lightning's vacation is shortlived, when the cocky, lime green, Italian Racing Champ, Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) challenges him to a compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix...a race created to determine the world's fastest car and one that takes place in several countries...Tokyo, Paris, the Italian Riviera and London. Mater tags along, gets mistaken for an undercover American agent by two ...

Two Jews On The Perfect Host

The Perfect Host - Movie Review By Joan Alperin-Schwartz Summer has begun...The days are hot, the beaches are crowded and...movie studios are competing to see who can make the most expensive films, filled with over the top special effects and over the top cartoon Super Heroes...who always save the world and always in 3D. We have Mechanical Men, Green Men, Mutant Men, Super Human Men, and Super Stupid Men who would never...in the real world...get the girl...any girl. How refreshing it is, when a film comes along that doesn't have any of the above. What it does have...is a story filled with great tension, complex dark characters, and clever twists at every turn. 'The Perfect Host' written and directed by first time Australian filmmaker. Nick Tomnay, is that kind of a film. John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) is a thief who is having a very bad day. He knocked over a bank and made off with $300000. John thinks he pulled off the perfect crime, but soon finds out...that is so not the case. Not only do the cops quickly figure out John's identity, but they discover the make, model and license number of the car he's driving. John's forced to abandon his vehicle and walk...Problem is...John has seriously injured his foot and it's bleeding badly. To make matters worse, John's description is being broadcast by every news outlet in the city. John needs to get off the streets and fast. Luckily, John bluffs his way into the house of Mr. Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Pierce) who is in the midst ...

Two Jews On The Beaver

Movie Review The Beaver 'The Beaver' stars Mel Gibson as Walter Black/The Beaver. The movie is directed by Jodie Foster who plays Walter's long suffering wife Meredith. Walter, a once successful toy executive and family man suffers from major depression. No matter what he tries...(pills, therapy, exercise, flagellating himself) Walter cannot shake the feeling that life is meaningness and all is hopeless. This dude is really in the dumps. Walter's business, JerryCo is going down hill fast. He spends most of his time in bed and his teenage son, Porter (the wonderful Anton Yelchin) is terrified that he is becoming just like him. Porter jots down on Post-its all the ways that he and his dad are similar. As the list grows, Porter becomes more and more freaked out. Things are not good in the Black home. Meredith is losing patience with her husband...Porter doesn't speak to his father and their seven year old son, Henry (Riley thomas Stewart) wonders why daddy doesn't come out of his bedroom. Walter is a suicide waiting to happen...But then, out of the blue, Walter finds a Beaver Puppet...in a dumpster of all places. Walter slips The Beaver onto his hand and...The Puppet starts to talk...And talk and talk. Well Walter is doing all the talking but he's speaking in this loud musical Cockney accent. And nothing will ever be the same for Walter because... The Beaver is here and he is taking over. Walter's life begins to change rapidly. The Beaver/Walter introduces a new toy line ...

Two Jews On Green Lantern

Green Lantern Movie Review By Joan Alperin-Schwartz Okay, so this is how the story goes...In a universe far, far away (where else would it be) an elite, powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. Helpful fact to know, for those of you unfamiliar with the DC comic...Green is the color of will. Yellow is the color of fear. So...green is good...yellow, bad...very very bad. Moving along...Each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him the ability to create anything that their mind can imagine...Pretty cool, right? Unfortunately, this really big, really evil, really gross looking creature named Parallax escapes from his intergalatic prison and threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe. Parallax oozes yellow...In other words, he makes you afraid...very afraid and sucks up your energy at the same time. Things are starting to look pretty grim. Luckily, Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) comes to the rescue. As fate would have it, Jordan, a cocky, gifted test pilot is chosen by the Ring to be the new member of the Green Lantern Corps. Now, the Green guys have very little respect for humans. Afterall, no human has ever been chosen to wear the ring of power. Well, it looks like all that is about to change now that Hal has the ring... There's only one small problem...Cocky Pilot guy has to master his fears, stop being wishy washy, and man up. Luckily for him, he has his childhood sweetheart, Carol ...

Two Jews On Your Highness

Your Highness Film Review 'Your Highness' directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and written by Danny McBride and Ben Best is the story of two brothers Prince Fabious (James Franco) and Prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) who embark on a dangerous mission to save Fabious' bride-to-be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel). The film opens with Prince Thadeus and his sidekick, Courtney (Rasmus Hardiker) about to be hung by a village of drawfs. Thadeous has upset the 'little people'. But due to a miscalculation, the rope around their necks isn't long enough to do any real damage, so instead of dying...Thadeous and Courtney, escape. Thadeous and Courtney ride fast and furious back to their kingdom where it just so happens, there's a celebration going on. Thadeous's brother, the fabulous Prince Fabious has just returned home from another successful quest bringing with him his beautiful virgin bride-to-be...Belladonna. Thadeous envies his brother, big time. We know this because Thadeous spends a lot of time sulking and whinning about how envious he is of the fabulous, Fabious. He also spends a lot of time drinking, partying and having sex with any woman that has a heartbeat...preferably from behind. Despite his envy, the last thing Thaddeus wants is to follow in his brother's footsteps...No quests for him. Well that soon changes when Belladonna gets kidnapped by the super evil wizard Leezar (the brilliantly funny Justin Theroux). The King (Charles Dance) gives his dead beat son ...

Defamation - Anti-Semitism: The Movie (1/7)

Part 2: www.youtube.com What is anti-Semitism today, two generations after the Holocaust? In his continuing exploration of modern Israeli life, director Yoav Shamir (Checkpoint, 5 Days, Flipping Out) travels the world in search of the most modern manifestations of the "oldest hatred", and comes up with some startling answers. In this irreverent quest, he follows American Jewish leaders to the capitals of Europe, as they warn government officials of the growing threat of anti-Semitism, and he tacks on to a class of Israeli high school students on a pilgrimage to Auschwitz. On his way, Shamir meets controversial historian, Norman Finkelstein, who offers his unpopular views on the manner that anti-Semitism is being used by the Jewish community and especially Israel for political gain. He also joins scholars, Stephen M. Walt and John J. Mearsheimer, while they give a lecture in Israel following the release of their book "The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy", about the un-proportional influence the Israel lobby in Washington enjoys. Yoav visits Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem, the must stop for all world leaders on their visits to Israel. While in Jerusalem, he drops by the house of his grandmother that offers her insight on the issue and declares that she is the "real Jew". The film questions our perceptions and terminology when an event proclaimed by some as anti-Semitic is described by others as legitimate criticism of Israel's government policies ...

Nazi Concentration Camp Documentary Film Footage Part 2 (1945)

Watch the full film: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com After 1939, with the beginning of the Second World War, concentration camps increasingly became places where the enemies of the Nazis were enslaved, starved, tortured and killed. During the War concentration camps for "undesirables" spread throughout Europe. New camps were created near centers of dense "undesirable" populations, often focusing on areas with large communities of Jews, Polish intelligentsia, Communists or Roma. Since millions of Jews lived in pre-war Poland, most camps were located in the area of General Government in occupied Poland for logistical reasons. It also allowed the Nazis to transport the German Jews outside of the German main territory. The two largest groups containing prisoners in the camps, both numbering in the millions, were Jews and the Soviet prisoners of war (POWs). Large numbers of Roma (or Gypsies), Poles, left of center political prisoners, homosexuals, people with disabilities, Jehovah's Witnesses, Catholic clergy, Eastern European intellectuals, and others—including common criminals. In addition, a small number of Western Allied POWs were sent to concentration camps for various reasons. Western Allied POWs who were Jews, or whom the Nazis believed to be Jewish, were usually sent to ordinary POW camps; however, a small number were sent to concentration camps under antisemitic policies. Sometimes the concentration camps were used to hold important prisoners, such as the generals ...
