On January 30, 1972, British troops opened fire on unarmed and peaceful civilians in Derry, Ireland during a civil rights march. This music video is a tribute to the 14 killed and others wounded - combining video/music of U2, video from "Bloody Sunday" (2002 movie), and photographs from that terrible day.

Please read these notes before asking questions: - Yes, it's James May, aka, Captain Slow of Top Gear fame. - No, this isn't from an episode of Top Gear. This was from a TV special called "James May On The Moon", which was made to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landings. James May has made several series that are completely unrelated to Top Gear. - The music is called "Flight" performed by Ty Unwin especially for this show. I'm sad to say that it is not currently available on its own. - The chase cars on take off and landing are a standard part of U-2 operations. They are there to assist the pilot, especially on landing. Landing a U-2 is a very difficult and delicate operation, having to land nose-wheel first. Check out www.youtube.com For clips from the training as well as some alternative scenes from the flight. - Surely the most amazing and humbling views to be seen by any human on a regular basis. The view from a U-2 cruising at 70000ft as the sky above turns black and the curvature of the Earth is visible. Despite first flying over 50 years ago, the U-2 continues to serve in the USAF, having outlasted its Mach 3 replacement, the SR-71 (also from Lockheed). The only people to have gone gone higher on any sort of regular basis were SR-71 pilots. Astronautics have, of course, gone higher still, but certainly not on a regular basis. There is a special message at the end of the video that I hope can be taken to heart by all.

The U-2 is a single-seat, single-engine, high-altitude/near space reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft providing signals, imagery and electronic measurements and signature intelligence. The plane, which flies up to altitudes of 70000 feet, is also capable of gathering a variety of imagery, including multi-spectral electro-optic, infrared, and synthetic aperture radar products which can be stored or sent to ground exploitation centers. In addition, it also supports high-resolution, broad-area synoptic coverage provided by the optical bar camera producing traditional film products, which are developed and analyzed after landing.

Long and narrow wings give the U-2 glider-like characteristics and allow it to quickly lift heavy sensor payloads to unmatched altitudes, keeping them there for extended periods of time. One of the oldest planes the United States Air Force still flies is used to carry out some of America's most sensitive and critical missions. Whether it's aiding NATO troops in Afghanistan, providing surveillance over North Korea or examining Japan's hurricane ravaged coast, the high altitude U-2 keeps flying despite initial plans to retire it by the end of this year. VOA Correspondent Steve Herman, at Osan Air Base in South Korea, got a rare look at what is considered the world's most difficult aircraft to fly.
