UNICEF: Exec. Director Ann M. Veneman in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, 8 October 2009 UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman visited the Philippines yesterday to see the damage done by Tropical Storm Ondoy and subsequent massive flooding. Residents of Santa Cruz village in low-lying Pasig City, metro Manila, experienced floodwaters three and a half feet deep. UNICEF has provided the Pasig City authorities with family kits containing necessities such as water cans, blankets, mosquito nets and sleeping mats for the evacuees. In addition, it has distributed kits with essential medicines for use by health workers in the affected communities, as well as water and hygiene kits to ensure that families have safe water for drinking and cooking. UNICEF: Disaster preparedness in Philippines schools

This years International Day for Disaster Reduction, 8 October, arrives in the wake of a series of earthquakes, cyclones and hurricanes that have highlighted the urgent need to reduce disaster risk. The following story marks the occasion. ALBAY PROVINCE, Philippines, 7 October 2008 At Banadero Elementary School, the clanging of the alarm bell echoes around the schoolyard. Children file out of their classrooms in orderly columns to pre-arranged assembly points. All the pupils, even the youngest, have the calm composure that comes from practice, because they have been through this drill before. Towering above their tin-roofed school is the perfectly formed cone of the Mount Mayon volcano; a steady plume of steam and smoke coming from its crater. With such an imposing neighbour, which has a history of violent eruptions, practice evacuation drills are a part of school life. Due to these drills we are not anymore afraid, because we already know what to do in times of calamities, said the Banadero schools principal, Paulina Vibal. UNICEF: Risk of online sexual exploitation in Philippines

CEBU, Philippines, 15 December 2008 In a poor shanty in the Central Philippines city of Cebu, a tiny internet café offers broadband connectivity with the outside world. In a place that lacks running water, the opportunities presented by the existence of the internet are boundless. But along with these opportunities are the inherent risks posed by the net. A growing number of youths in the Philippines are being drawn into a dangerous world of sexual exploitation by foreigners they meet online. Recognising the harm being inflicted on so many teenagers, UNICEF is supporting initiatives around the Philippines to deal with the problem. A number of internet cafés have agreed to remove their private booths after one of these initiatives put pressure on them to do so. UNICEF is also promoting a charter which lays down a code of conduct for internet cafes to follow to make them safer for children. To read the full story, visit: www.unicef.org

UNICEF: Response to floods in Philippines

NEW YORK, USA, 1 October 2009 More than 200 people have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced from their homes due to flooding in and around metropolitan Manila in the Philippines. UNICEF has expressed deep concern about the well-being of children and families affected by Tropical Storm Ondoy, which triggered the floods this past weekend, dropping a months worth of rain in just 12 hours. The floods have affected a quarter of metropolitan Manila, as well as some 24 provinces around the country. In response, UNICEF has been distributing pre-positioned emergency supplies, including both food and non-food items. Meanwhile, 90000 packs of water-purification tablets and 650 water-purification kits have been shipped from UNICEFs main supply warehouse in Copenhagen, Denmark, to aid displaced families who do not have access to safe water. This gives them a chance to have drinking water available, because what these [shipments] include is water vessels and also treatment for drinking water, said UNICEF Emergency Logistics Specialist Jens Grimm. MaximsNewsNetwork: 02 October 2009 - UNICEF: UNICEF Director of Emergency Programs Louis Georges Arsenault comments on the storm in the Philippines which left almost two million people struggling to cope with dangerous flooding. More than 200 people have died and almost two million people, including an estimated one million children, have been affected by floods and landslides around the Philippines capital, Manila. At the same time, United Nations emergency personnel in Indonesias province of West Sumatra Indonesias province of West Sumatra are mobilizing to prevent the outbreak of epidemic diseases and get children back to school two days after a massive earthquake killed at least 1100 people, trapped and injured many thousands more, and destroyed numerous buildings. SOUNDBITE (English) Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF's Director of the Office of Emergency Programmes: The combination of factors, even though they might not be linked, is quite extraordinary, because the geography is huge in this part of the world, but it means that we have to respond to all of this at the same time. UNICEF: Living in the shadow of danger in Philippines

23 February, 2010 - At the ringing of the bell, staff, students and their parents at the San Jose Elementary School know exactly what to do. They have practiced this drill before and know that in this disaster-prone corner of the Philippines, it is an exercise that could one day save lives. For behind this school, shrouded in mist and steam, is the Mount Mayon volcano a permanent reminder of potential danger. Supported by UNICEF, the local non-governmental organization TABI organizes a number of initiatives in schools in Albay province. The focus of TABIs work with the local community is self-reliance, knowing that in times of emergency they may only have each other for support. These programmes and investments in education have proved their worth in building resilience in the community and shaping a new generation of leaders for a more sustainable future.

By Any Means in the Philippines

Charley Boorman visited a project in Manila in the Philippines during his By Any Means 2 adventure to see the work that UNICEF and its partners are doing to reach out to some of the hundreds of thousands of street children in the country. "The thing you notice most is the number of children living on the street. They say that something like 250000 children sleep rough in the city," said Charley. As part of the project, children learn life skills through games and films. "Without education, these children will spend the rest of their lives begging, hustling or involved in prostitution. But by educating them at least they stand a chance of getting off the streets." Read more about the project visit in Manila: www.unicef.org.uk

UNICEF: Girls around the world talk about their lives and their rights

www.unicef.org NEW YORK, USA, 4 March 2010 A UNICEF-organized event in New York marked the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action. Adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, the Beijing Platform is the world's most comprehensive framework for achieving gender equality. Donnady Coquila Lao, a youth advocate from the Philippines, noted that gains in gender equality had fallen short of the expectations that were set at the adoption of the Beijing Platform. "Its very sad to know that children are not aware of gender equality," she said. "It is very disappointing." At the close of the discussion, Ms. Lao was asked to identify one thing that she thought would make a difference in the fight for gender equality. She suggested celebrating an international Day of the Girl. Then, all girls will realize how important they are, she said.

UNICEF Appeals for Aid for Women and Children

This is the VOA Special English Development Report, from voaspecialenglish.com UNICEF is appealing for more than one billion dollars in aid for women and children around the world. The United Nations Children's Fund has released its "Humanitarian Action Report" for two thousand ten. The report lists twenty-eight countries and territories with some of the world's most pressing crises affecting women and children. Haiti was considered to be in crisis long before the earthquake in January. The deputy executive director of UNICEF, Hilde Johnson, says the quake has only made the need for aid more immediate. But she says children all over the world have the right to the same assistance. The "Humanitarian Action Report" discusses several issues that UNICEF says increasingly threaten the basic rights of women and children. It says climate change has caused droughts and food insecurity in many areas. High food prices and the global financial crisis of two thousand eight-two thousand nine have only added to poverty and malnutrition. And armed conflict continues to threaten the lives of millions. Hilde Johnson says children are always the most affected by conflicts and disasters. They face an increased risk of abuse, including sexual violence and other serious rights violations. UNICEF deals with about two hundred emergencies around the world every year. The greatest need last year was in sub-Saharan Africa. The report says drought, food insecurity and civil unrest affected about ...
