Afghan Stalemate: 'US pullout to be delayed for years'

A leaked CIA report says the situation in Afghanistan is mired in stalemate, contradicting recent optimistic Pentagon statements. The sobering conclusion is deepening divisions between US intelligence and the military, about the outcome of the decade-long war. The report also claims that attempts to improve security are being undermined by corruption, incompetent governance, and Taliban fighters operating safely from neighbouring Pakistan. Khalil Nouri, who's the co-founder of the New World Strategies Coalition told RT the situation in Afghanistan is so grim, that the US might be having second thoughts on withdrawing. Pullout Put Off: US ignore 2014 Afghan exit deadline

The decade-long war in Afghanistan is nowhere near its end as the top US commander in the country admits American troops will stay there much longer than expected. Some 90 thousand US soldiers serving in Afghanistan had been set to leave the country in 2014, the original withdrawal deadline set by NATO. Washington had promised that all foreign troops would be out by then, leaving control of the military situation to Afghan authorities. But author Jere Van Dyk, who's written extensively on the subject of Afghanistan, says the war has only got worse over the years. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

William Engdahl: No pull-out in 2011, US will spread Afghan war

The commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan says he is not bound by the July 2011 date set for a troop pull-out. General David Petraeus said he could well advise President Obama not to go ahead if he believes it's the wrong time. American public support for the war is at an all-time low, with July being the deadliest month for US and NATO troops since 2001. With frustration growing about the occupation of Afghanistan, politicians in Germany have even suggested talking to the Taliban and terrorist organizations to avoid a further escalation of violence.

Afghan president said he'd side with Pakistan against US in war. So let's pull out of Afghanistan

Karzai is no friend of America and Afghanistan is training US blood and treasure. A few things to consider about the war in Afghanistan, take from the following article: www.nolanchart.com 1) CIA Chief Leon Panetta, National Security Adviser General James Jones, and retired Colonel Douglas MacGregor have all confirmed that there are less than 100 members of al Qaeda remaining in Afghanistan. Many members of al Qaeda have simply fled Afghanistan for neighboring countries such as Pakistan. 2) the US government is indirectly funding the Taliban JUAN GONZALEZ: Aram Roston traces how the Pentagon's civilian contractors in Afghanistan end up paying insurgent groups to protect American supply routes from attack. The practice of buying the Taliban's protection is not a secret. US military officials in Kabul told Roston that a minimum of ten percent of the Pentagon's logistics contracts consists of payments to the Taliban. AMY GOODMAN: That translates into millions of dollars being funneled to the Taliban. This summer, anticipating a surge of US troops, the military expanded its trucking contracts in Afghanistan by 600 percent to a total of over $2 billion. 3) Twice in 2010, Afghan President Hamid Karzai defiantly spoke of the US presence in his country "If I had to choose sides today, I'd choose the Taliban," Karzai seethed. The "main enemies" of Afghanistan are the Taliban, the United States and the international community, according to Karzai. It's not the first time Karzai had ...

'WikiLeaks prove Afghan pullout damn lucky for US'

The material leaked by WikiLeaks is underground military stuff, but it is not high-level decision-making, believes Neil Sheehan, former NY Times reporter who published secret Pentagon papers on Vietnam War 40 years ago. "[The] military are incredibly careless to have put this stuff almost virtually online within their own system. Apparently all of this could have come from one soldier who obtained that. When I was in Vietnam the names of informers were very carefully guarded," remembers journalist. The head of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, is about to be under the heat because these leaks contain sensitive materials that is a major embarrassment to the military institutions, Sheehan states. "The [WikiLeaks] material shows just how difficult the war is, how difficult the environment to work is," former reporter stressed. "The American public has very little contact with the reality of the war. We do not have a draft anymore. The sons of the middle class are not being drafted and being sent off to war as occurred in Vietnam. Soldiers in Afghanistan are young men and women who joined [army] because they either want to be a soldier or marine, or because they think they are going to get a college education, and also they will not catch a bullet or an explosive -- it will not happen to them."

Karzai urges US pullback; Afghan Taliban suspend talks after massacre

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The Afghan Taliban announced Thursday they have suspended a diplomatic office in Qatar intended for talks with the United States. The group cited what it described as the Americans' "alternating and ever-changing position" for the decision. Thursday's announcement came shortly after US officials said they had moved a US soldier accused of killing 16 civilians out of Afghanistan and on the day that US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta was meeting in Kabul with President Hamid Karzai.Preliminary talks "with the occupying enemy" had already begun over the exchange of prisoners, the Taliban said. "The Americans initially agreed upon taking practical steps regarding the exchange of prisoners and to not oppose our political office, but with the passage of time, they turned their backs on their promises and started initiating baseless propaganda portraying the envoys of the Islamic Emirate as having commenced multilateral negotiations for solving the Afghan dilemma," it added.Hamid Karzai urges US troops to pull out of Afghan outposts after a US soldier allegedly killed 16 villagers.

A suicide bomb blast at a hospital in eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 25, and wounded dozens more. The attack comes a day after a bomb ripped through a market in another part of the country, killing ten. Despite the recent surge of violence in Afghanistan, Barack Obama has announced the withdrawal of over 30 thousand US soldiers by the end of next year. Obama's military commanders are calling the plan risky, and advise a much smaller troop reduction. All this as International investigators say the nearly ten-year-long US mission has failed to reduce corruption among Afghan officials. Obama's decision to withdraw 33000 troops from Afghanistan is expected to improve the president's approval rating. Military officials fear the drawback would significantly undermine their gains on the ground.

US: Taliban Will Retake Afghanistan After NATO Leaves

A NATO report made public yesterday suggests that the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, is set to retake control of Afghanistan after NATO-led forces withdraw.Early this year Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar reportedly confirmed having opened peace talks with US authorities, demanding the release of Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay and the complete pullout of US led forces. Of course, US president Barack Obama wants to maintain America's prestige and negotiate a withdrawal that leaves America's credibility intact, which may be fair enough, but what if the Taliban won't compromise? What leverage will the United States have at the negotiating table?

It's a special-forces entry like no other and guaranteed to spoil the element of surprise, but Afghanistan's new elite soldiers insist they will be no less effective in countering insurgents than controversial night raids by US forces. Under the cover of darkness, Afghan soldiers surround the homes of suspected insurgent targets and shout a demand those inside separate into men and women before storming the door, safeguarding conservative cultural sensitivities. "When we go for an operation we announce eight to 10 times 'Whoever you are come out of your house. We are Afghan security forces and will not harm you. We only want our own target.' As soon as we finish calling we bring women and children to one side and men to the other side," said Colonel Jalaluddin Yaftali, the commander of Afghan Special Forces. "During our night raids we have killed many so-called 'shadow governors' for the Taliban, self-nominated Taliban police chiefs and shadow district governors, as well as their commanders and fighters," Yaftali added. He said his unit planned to number about 3000, but still only half that size, was as well-equipped as NATO forces, with American M4 rifles and night-vision gear. It had also recruited female soldiers to search women-only compounds. NATO's post-exit Afghan security bill 18.04.12

NATO ministers are considering how to fund Afghan security forces when international troops pull out. At the meeting in Brussels today US officials are expected to press allies both inside and outside NATO for a commitment to pay around a billion euros a year beyond 2014. It comes as Afghanistan's president set another condition for a long-awaited strategic partnership with the United States. He said the accord must spell out the yearly US commitment to pay billions of dollars for the cash-strapped Afghan security forces. The demand threatens to further delay the key bilateral pact and suggests that Afghan president Hamid Karzai is worried that the US commitment to his country is wavering as the drawdown of foreign forces nears. The US already pays the vast majority of the budget to train, equip and run the Afghan security forces and expects to do so for years to come to compensate for Afghanistan's moribund economy. But the yearly Congressional budget process, as well as the American public's weariness with the Afghan conflict, would make it difficult for Washington to commit to a dollar figure years in advance. The strategic partnership agreement is crucial to the US exit strategy in Afghanistan. American officials hope it will both map the course for US forces after the majority of combat troops leave in 2014 and give the Afghan people confidence they are not about to be abandoned by their most important international ally.
