Pay Up! 'Pakistan tax trick a ploy to please US'

Pakistan's decision to impose tax on US and NATO supplies going to Afghanistan through its territory is only a part of a broader package that Pakistan is discussing at the moment. Author and journalist Webster Tarpley says that the idea of a transit tax is a "cheap trick to provide political cover for Pakistani politicians who want to cave in and appease the US one more time." Angry at NATO? Pakistan shuts route for Afghan supplies

And NATO's war effort in Afghanistan is facing another obstacle. Pakistan has closed an important supply route for the coalition. A hundred fuel tankers and trucks haven't been allowed into Afghanistan. It is seen as a retaliation to a NATO helicopter raid into the territory of Pakistan in which 3 local soldiers were killed and 3 more wounded. The alliance says the incident is now being investigated and promised the Pakistan's sovereignty would be respected. Recently the number of missile strikes and helicopter raids against suspected militants hiding in Pakistan's tribal zone has been on the rise. Pakistani officials say the attacks are violating international law and should be stopped. Pakistani political expert Ahmed Quraishi told RT that the US-led coalition has failed to persuade Pashtun tribes living on either side of the border to join peace efforts.

Afghan footage showing attack on US convoy where 40 American troops were killed

Looks like this event has been censored in the Western media. New footage obtained by Press TV showing Afghan fighters attacking a US supply convoy in the northeast province of Kunar. The convoy had entered Afghanistan through Torkham border in the east and was carrying supplies, including fuel, for a US military base in the province. The convoy was escorted by eight US armored vehicles carrying about 40 American soldiers and an Afghan military truck when it came under attack in Jalala village. The Afghan fighters claim they have killed all 40 American troops in the attack and seized the convoy's supplies. American airstrikes have targeted the village several times in the past months, resulting in heavy civilian casualties. The invasion of Afghanistan took place with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the country. Nine years on, however, Afghanistan remains unstable and civilians continue to pay the price. Civilian casualties have always been a source of friction between the Afghan government and foreign troops, with Afghan officials frequently condemning NATO attacks on civilians. According to a UN report, about 2800 civilians were killed by foreign forces and Taliban militants in Afghanistan last year. A Press TV correspondent in Kabul says killings of civilians by US-led foreign forces will exacerbate the already tense situation in Afghanistan, where people are furious at the recent desecration of the Qur'an in the US. www ...

Pakistan halts NATO supplies to Afghanistan after attack - September 30, 2010

General Beg demands right for Pakistan Air Force to shoot down ISAF copters, drones paffalcons.com Pakistan closed a vital transit link for NATO supplies for the war in Afghanistan on Thursday in apparent retaliation for an attack by coalition helicopters on a Pakistani security post hours earlier. Trucks and oil tankers were stopped at the border post of Torkham just north of Peshawar and it was unclear when the post would reopen, a Pakistani security official said. A closure of the crossing through which NATO and American troops receive most of their non-lethal equipment is rare, and signaled a downturn in the military relationship between Pakistan and the United States just three months before the Obama administration takes stock of progress in Afghanistan. A NATO helicopter attacked a border post at Mandati Kandaw, a town close to the capital of Parachinar in the Kurram area of Pakistan's tribal region, at 5 am on Thursday, the official said. Three paramilitary soldiers of the Frontier Corps were killed, and three others injured, he said. Another border post at Kharlachi in the Kurram region was struck a few hours later, the official added. The two posts are about 15 miles apart and border Paktia Province in Afghanistan. The incident occurred as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon Panetta, was in Islamabad for a previously scheduled visit. He was expected to meet the head of the Pakistani military, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, later on Thursday ...

US funds our enemy Taliban's Afghan war

For Freedom Forums - figh.tk Peter Dow's website - http US Tax Dollars Fueling Afghan Insurgency House Investigation: Private Contractors Paying Warlords, Criminals to Get Supplies to US and NATO Bases Lara Logan reports for CBS Evening News www.cbsnews.com (CBS) Billions of US taxpayer dollars are fuelling corruption in Afghanistan and funding the insurgency, according to a six-month investigation by the House subcommittee on National Security and Foreign affairs. The committee's chairman, Rep. John F. Tierney, D-Mass., told CBS News: "the business is war and the war is business and you've got 'Warlord Inc.' going on over there." Committee investigators found that private contractors in Afghanistan have been paying local warlords, criminals, government officials and a list of others for security on Afghanistan's roads, to get much needed supplies to US and NATO bases. But even worse, anecdotal evidence indicates that US tax dollars are also going into the hands of the Taliban, who own many of the roads and areas through which the trucking convoys have to pass, reports CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan. That would mean that the US is literally funding the enemy, as violence escalates daily in Afghanistan and more US soldiers and Marines are dying than ever before in this war. "This is the tip of the iceberg," Tierney said in an interview with CBS News. "There are other contracts over there, whether they are cell phone contracts or base security, and if you ...

US and Afghan troops on patrol in Afghanistan's Argendab valley Sept 11 10.

Story US soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division attempted to win over local residents in Arghendab valley on Saturday (September 11) in their fight against Taliban insurgents in the area. Soldiers from COP (Combat Outpost) Nolan along with the Afghani army visited a nearby village bringing food supplies, material for the renovation of the village mosque and toys for the children. The village of Saidano Kalache has approximately 100 residents, mostly farmers who work in the fields surrounding the military camp which frequently comes under fire from Taliban insurgents. The US troops focus on good relations with local farmers, as they can provide information about the placing of home-made bombs or insurgent movements. Visits like the one on Saturday take place a few times every month, and also help to gather intelligence and familiarise troops with the local environment. They were initiated by the 101st Airborne's predecessors about a year ago. Saidano Kalache is the only village in the area which was not used by insurgents to target US troops, but support for the Taliban in the area is widespread. On this occasion, one house was searched for signs of insurgent activity and the presence of arms or explosives.

Pakistan Furious Over NATO Attack, Closes Supply Lines

BY ADNAN S. KHAN ANCHOR ANTHONY MARTINEZ NATO helicopters allegedly opened fire on two Pakistani outpost killing over two dozen Pakistani troops. Here's ABC "Another blow to relations between US and Pakistan this morning. Pakistan is accusing US-led NATO helicopters of firing on an army checkpoint along the border with Afghanistan kiling at least 25 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan immediately responded by closing a key border crossing to supply US troops in Afghanistan." Early reports estimated at least 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed. That number rose as high as 28. The Telegraph has the response, and apologies, from NATO commanders. "The commander of the International Security and Assistance Force stated that he is personally paying the highest attention to this matter and that he is committed to thoroughly investigate and determine the facts. He expresses his sincere and personal heart felt condolences to the family and loved ones of any member of Pakistan security forces." That commander is none other that US General John Allen. And his sincere apology is apparently not enough for Pakistani forces. Euronews reports Pakistan has already taken actions against NATO forces. "In an apparent reprisal Afghan bound NATO supply trucks and fuel tankers have been prevented using a key route in Khyber region near Peshawar." It's not the first time Pakistan has blocked supplies to US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. And Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reports usually such protest doesn't ...
