The attack on the US embassy in Sarajevo by a gunman believed to be a follower of an ultraconservative Islamic sect exposed Bosnia's inability to deal with religious extremists who penetrated the country during its 1992-5 war. The gunman is accused of shooting at the embassy building for at least 30 minutes on Friday, wounding a policeman guarding the facility, before a police sniper immobilised him with a shot in his leg. The attacker, identified by police as 23-year-old Mevlid Jasarevic, was known to Bosnian police as someone who had frequented one of the country's most isolated communities practicing extremely conservative branch of Islam alternatively referred to as Wahhabism and Salafism. KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces, supported by coalition forces, successfully concluded an operation this morning against a small group of insurgents who attacked several locations in Kabul City. Insurgents attacked the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan headquarters and the US Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday with small arms fire from outside the secure zone surrounding these compounds. Afghan National Security Forces, who have the lead for security in Kabul, responded immediately, to include Afghan National Army helicopters providing air support. Afghan and coalition forces trapped the insurgents in the partially-constructed, multi-story building they were using as a firing position, and conducted a methodical, floor-by-floor clearing operation. The Ministry of the Interior is reporting six insurgents killed in the operation. "The people of Afghanistan have chosen a path to the future with transition," said Gen. John R. Allen, ISAF commander. "In this attack, the insurgency succeeded in killing Afghan civilians, once again demonstrating their bankrupt ideology, which has been rejected by the Afghan people. BREAKING NEWS Sarajevo - BiH police killed one of the attackers in US embassy, which was on Friday afternoon from Kalashnikov rifles fired at a building in downtown Sarajevo, wounding two people. The second attacker was wounded in the hip. Witnesses say the attackers were Wahhabis, judging by the way they dressed. Wounded two police officers who provide the embassy. According to Dnevni Avaz, a police officer was wounded in the head, another in the leg. The police quickly arrived at the scene of the incident, and after twenty minutes of both the attacker incapacitated. Wounded attacker was transferred to hospital. Dnevni Avaz, whose editorial office is located near the embassy, accompanied the events by the minute. The newspaper reports that one of the attackers had a black bag in which he appears to be explosives. The initial reports indicated that one of the attackers shot of 15:40, followed by a half-hour fight with the police. Many citizens of Sarajevo gathered at the intersection of the railway station and observe what is happening around the Embassy.

The US embassy in Nigeria warned on Wednesday that Islamist group Boko Haram may be planning attacks in the capital Abuja, including against hotels frequented by Westerners. "The US embassy has received information that Boko Haram may be planning attacks in Abuja, Nigeria, including against hotels frequently visited by Westerners," an emergency message to US citizens on its website said. "The US government has no additional information regarding the timing of these possible attacks. The Nigerian government is aware of the threat and is actively implementing security measures." It gave no further information on the threats. A police spokesman told AFP "we are not aware of any special threat of attacks by Boko Haram or any individual or group." "However, police are ever ready and prepared to deal with any situation and security threat to Nigerians and foreigners living in Abuja or any other parts of the country," said Olusola Amore. The US issued a similar message in November that drew harsh criticism in Nigeria. No attacks occurred in Abuja in the wake of the November warning. A series of coordinated attacks in Afghanistan's capital Kabul left at least seven people dead and 17 wounded, and resulted in a 19-hour long gunfight. Militants targeted the American embassy and NATO forces headquarters, before several suicide bombers hit police stations elsewhere in the city. Insurgents stormed and occupied a half-built high-rise building, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades from there. Afghan and NATO forces surrounded the building, killing six militants and forcing several others to flee. US embassy staff were ordered to retreat into bomb and bullet proof shelters. Texas-based Derrick Crowe of the "Brave New Foundation" think-tank says the presence of US troops in Afghanistan merely encourages the Taliban to keep on fighting. A series of attacks in the Afghan capital Kabul were in retaliation for Koran burnings, a US Marine urination video and the Kandahar massacre, the Taliban has reportedly claimed. The co-ordinated strikes on Sunday targeted Nato's headquarters, the city's parliament building and a number of diplomatic residences - including the British and US embassies. President Hamid Karzai is also reported to be under lockdown and MPs have been among those fighting back against the onslaught, with some standing with Afghan forces to shoot at insurgents. "These attacks are the beginning of the spring offensive and we planned them for months," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has been quoted as saying. Some fighting is still on-going between militants and Afghan police across the city, but hours after the initial explosions and gunfire, reports said only two attackers had died. Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said Afghan forces captured two suicide bombers as they headed for targets in Kabul. On August 7th 1998 a car bomb exploded near the US embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Immediately following the event, a decision was made by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Security to dispatch to Kenya a search and rescue mission headed by the HFC S&R experts. The task force consisted of approximately 170 people - representatives of the HFC National S&R unit, K9 squads, a regular S&R force from the HFC training facility, a medical team from the IDF Medical Corps, representatives of the SIGNALS Corps, the IDF spokesman and PR unit, the Foreign Ministry and the media. Upon departure from Israel the mission was commanded by the task force CO Brigadier-General Ilan Harari, the HFC Chief of Staff, the officer commanding the force in the field Colonel Shalom Ben-Arye, CO of the HFC training facility, and the officer commanding the S&R element of the task force Lt. Colonel Nachum Frenkel, CO of the HFC National S&R unit. On August 10th 1998 the mission in place was joined by the HFC Commanding Officer Major-General Gabi Ofir and the S&R unit commander Colonel Udi Ben-Ori. The task force personnel succeeded in rescuing 3 survivors and 95 bodies. The remaining members of the UN Security Council criticized the two countries for the veto, but Russia and China fear Syria will share the same fate as Libya. Russia took matters into their own hands by offering to host peace talks between the Rebels and the Syrian government but the rebels have refused the offer.
