The UST Cabo Clasico is one of the most anticipated skimboarding events in the world. Solid waves and perfect weather regularly grace this event, and those who have attended it always come back with good memories. A massive south swell filled in Friday, the first of three potential contest days in Cabo San Lucas. Contestants arrived at Lovers Beach at 9am to find solid double to triple overhead waves breaking far off the beach. After a short deliberation the decision was made to let low tide roll through, then meet in the afternoon at Yellow Hotels where more shelter from the swell and a rising tide would offer more chance for reachable skimboarding. The consensus after day 1 was that if a new south swell did arrive as some forecasts predicted, then the pro finals could be borderline epic for an east coast event, and those forecasts were correct. Quarter Finals were run at a lower tide than the previous day, making for difficult conditions for many of the initial heats, which led to some early upsets. Local favorites Michael Brickle and Perry Wells, who looked like shoe-ins on the days prior, struggled with the poor waves and were nudged out in their Quater Final heats, leaving Woody Harris as the only North Carolinian left in the contest. Brad Domke, who's hand had been injured during his heat on Saturday, powered through the pain and into the Semi Finals, while fellow Floridian John Akerman flexed his technical abilities and smooth style to propel himself into the Semis where he would take an unfortunate 4th in an intense battle against Bryan, Domke and Harris, respectively. After five years of trying to get an earlier date for the Exile Skimboards and Main Street Oktoberfest, a permit was finally issued for the weekend of October 2nd 2010. The date change appears to be paying off. Arriving at the contest site at 7:30, the sun was out but a nasty south wind had picked up, putting a weighing heavily upon the mood at the beach. Additionally, dark and ominous clouds loomed on the horizon. People spoke in jest of "the curse of Oktoberfest". As the first heat of pros ran, some large drops of tropical rain could be felt here and there. By the end of the heat it was time to run for cover as those few drops turned into a full on tropical downpour. The entire crowd huddled under tents, umbrellas and the pier taking shelter from the completely uncharacteristic warm and wet weather. People were smiling and shaking their heads, laughing at the comedy of it all. Then, within minutes it was over. The sun came out, the waves continued getting more glassy and the swell even picked up with the incoming tide. Conditions continued to get better and better throughout the initial round of pros and spirits were high. Bill Bryan. What else can be said...? The man is a machine, taking on challengers less than half his age, and everywhere in between, he still emerges victorious almost every time. A dense fog and rising swell greeted competitors and spectators on day 2 of the LBI Skim Jam presented by Surf Shack. Nevertheless, the morning started off quickly so as to avoid the forecasted afternoon onshore wind with heat A of the professional semi-finals kicking off just after 9:30 AM Although the better waves seemed to peak up on the point just 10 yards north of the competitors area, competitors were wise to stay close to the judging stand and deal with the "troughy" conditions created by the morning high tide as the dense fog greatly skewed the vision of the judges. This first heat saw the dramatic elimination of favored pro Morgan Just, who was coming straight off his win at the WCS only 1 weekend prior, as his left hamstring tightened up in an all-too-familiar fashion for him and threatened to ruin the rest of his season should he continue to finish his heat. Morgan took the safe route and bowed out mid-heat. Meanwhile John Akerman continued to wow the crowd in his pro debut with his perfectly executed 3-shuvs out to and on his waves. The other standout in this heat, as well as the contest overall, was Steven Bradford, with his aggressive style and clearly superior amplitude in the smaller surf which propelled himself and Akerman into the final round. That left fellow gulf-coaster John Howell who's third place finish sent him forward to fight for the 5th place position in a consolation round against the 3rd place winner of heat B.
