VOA Learning English - Development Report: A Service Group Built on 'Friendship'

This is the VOA Special English Development Report. Amizade means friendship in Portuguese. It is also the name of a service organization in the United States that places volunteers in projects mostly in developing countries. Amizade's executive director, Eric Hartman, thought of the idea in Brazil in nineteen ninety-four, which explains the Portuguese name. The Amizade Global Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs placed three hundred volunteers in nine countries last year. These American university students and others worked in thirteen communities. Amizade works with local groups and individuals on service and learning projects. The local groups define and direct the projects. The volunteers learn about local culture and make friends as they work in the community. Amizade charges college students as much as ten thousand dollars for three months of experience. Volunteers generally provide labor and do things like teach and assist at health centers. They can also do research. College students can earn work-study credits. Participants in programs have included a twelve-year-old boy and a man in his eighties. There are programs in Ghana, Tanzania, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and Jamaica. There are also programs in Germany, Poland, Northern Ireland and the United States. Recently, in Tanzania, thirteen Amizade volunteers worked on systems to harvest rainwater from the roofs of homes. They worked on the project in the Karagwe area, in the northwestern part of the country. Eric ...

Group Offers Shortwave Radios to Poor Communities

I'm Mario Ritter with theVOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http A shortwave radio might seem like ancient technology these days. But for some people, it remains their only link to the wider world. Ears to Our World is an organization based in the United States. It provides shortwave radios to schools and communities in some of the poorest areas of the world. The radio is small, about the size of a book, and self-powered. Users turn a crank. Winding it for two minutes provides about forty minutes of listening time.Ears to Our World is supported by private donations and partners including Eton, the company that makes the Eton Grundig radios. Thomas Witherspoon started Ears to Our World in two thousand eight. He said: "Our radios are going to people who have no other source of international news and information. It's hard for them to learn new languages and be connected to the bigger world." He said teachers use this information in the classroom to help students learn about the world around them. Ears to Our World works with local organizations to get the radios to where they are needed most. Mr. Witherspoon says the radios are now in eleven communities, most of them in Africa. He says many of these communities are unable to get information any other way. He takes the radios to parts of the world that lack access to the Internet or to a national power grid of any kind. These include communities and villages in South Sudan where people do not ...

Explaining the Amish Way of Life - VOA Story

Not far from the hustle and bustle of city life live the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. These deeply religious people shun the conveniences of modern society to live a simpler life where transportation is a horse and buggy and horsepower really means horsepower. The Amish are very devout and take seriously the biblical commands to separate themselves from the things of the world including electricity. Power comes from propane, kerosene, wood, coal, or natural gas. As the world around the peaceful farmland changes, so have some of the traditions of the Amish. Transportation is no longer limited to horse-drawn buggies. "There is a division among the Amish over the automobile. One group got automobiles, another group kept the horse and buggy. we just simply name them old order -- drive the horse and buggy, and the new order -- drive the automobiles. They have electric, they have meeting houses and they don't have green shades." But many traditions remain. Amish children attend one-room schoolhouses through grade eight and farming is the mainstay of Amish life. There are normally two horses on a farm for buggies. Several mules are kept for farming. Milking is one of the most important sources of income on the farm. Many Amish leaders believe their separation from the outside world strengthens their community. And that community is thriving. Despite what many on the outside would describe as a backwards lifestyle, the Amish population in Lancaster County has almost ...

Medieval Warriors in a Campground in Pennsylvania

For two weeks every summer, a campground in the US state of Pennsylvania is transformed into a medieval village where people dress and act as if they were living back in the middle ages. There are tournaments, musical performances and, perhaps most importantly, battles in nearby fields just for the honor and glory of it all. Our correspondent, Zorislav Baydyuk, reports on the Pennsic War -- a blend of the words Pennsylvania and Punic. Here is his report, as narrated by Julia Taboh.

Clinton Tells VOA: US Seeks More Interaction With Iranian People

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told VOA that she believes the government of Iran is a dictatorship, and she said the United States wants to assure Iranians that their aspirations for freedom are legitimate. She spoke to VOA's Persian News Network Wednesday and addressed the Iranian people directly. She said the United States hopes to open a "virtual embassy in Tehran" online by the end of the year. She said America would very much like to improve relations with Iranians and encouraged Iranian students to "come and study in the United States." And she said Washington seeks to provide tools that would allow Iranians to circumvent the "electronic curtain" she said Iran has imposed on communications online.

Grand Canyon Skywalk - VOA Story

The Grand Canyon in the Southwest state of Arizona is one of the seven natural wonders in the world. Carved out by the Colorado River over millions of years, the colorful gorge is over 400 kilometers long and is 24 kilometers across at its widest point. Now visitors to this popular tourist destination have a new way to experience the breathtaking views of the canyon. The horseshoe-shaped skywalk extends 21 meters over the Grand Canyon's edge, creating a unique vantage point for visitors to look deep down into the chasm and the winding Colorado River 1200 meters below. David Jin, the developer of the skywalk project, recalls his Grand Canyon experience that brought about the idea. "It was back in 1996," says Jin. "I took a helicopter tour at (the) Grand Canyon from the bottom to the top. After that, I wondered what it would be like to walk among the cliffs. Therefore, the idea of skywalk was born." While Jin will profit from the $30 million project for 25 years, the Hualapai Indians, who agreed to building the skywalk on their land along the Grand Canyon's western rim hope income from tourists will help alleviate poverty in their community. Sheri Yellowhawk is the CEO of the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation, which oversees the tribe's tourism business. Skywalk is expected to be the centerpiece of the Hualapai Indians' tourism industry which includes helicopter tours, river rafting, a cowboy town and a museum of Indian replica homes. Les Paul - VOA Story

Les Paul may have had more influence upon the sound of modern rock and roll music than any other person in history. It was he who released the solid-body electric guitar that bears his name in 1952. It was built and marketed by Gibson, and, along with constant refinements and innovations from Les Paul himself, it has gone on to become one of the most widely used and respected electric guitars in history. Such noteworthy artists as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page are all associated with the Gibson Les Paul, but this is not Les Paul's sole contribution to the world of music. Les Paul was born Lester William Polfus in 1916 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. His lifelong interest in electronic innovation began as far back as the age of nine when he built his first crystal radio. He began playing guitar at the same age and was playing semi-professionally by the age of 13. The production of a solid-body electric guitar had been a long time dream of Paul's. He began waorking in early 1941 on his design by putting guitar strings on railroad ties in order to test his ideas. He approached Gibson for the first time in the '40's with his ideas. He was met with reluctance because Gibson did not often align with artists. They only agreed to market the product in 1952 when the idea became a viable option commercially. Les Paul was approached to help with the design and production because of his familiarity with the characteristics of solid-body electric guitars and his popularity as a ...

English Can Be Difficult to Learn (VOA Special English)

www.manythings.org Many teachers and students say English can be difficult to learn. It has more words than any other language. The biggest dictionaries contain about six-hundred-thousand words. Many people who come to the United States from foreign countries have already studied English. They may have done very well. But when they arrive here, they may not understand much of what they hear or read. English learned in classrooms sometimes seems very different from everyday spoken English. Studies show that it can take several years of living in the United States while studying English for a foreign person to speak the language well. Large Hadron Collider Particle Accelerator - VOA Story

The world's largest particle physics laboratory is under construction on the border between Switzerland and France. At the heart is the Large Hadron Collider Particle Accelerator being built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Its members hope it will reveal secrets of the universe and its formation. The goal of the project is to discover the origin of matter by replicating conditions just after "the big bang." Twenty nations and international bodies make up CERN. Last April, scientists and journalists gathered at its Swiss headquarters, as the last of 1700 huge magnets was lowered into the Large Hadron Collider or LHC. CERN Director General Robert Aymar said, "It is an enormous task, with very tricky logistics, because the tunnel is very narrow, and when we move the magnets in nobody can be in the way." The particle accelerator and collider is a 27 kilometer tunnel, about 100 meters underground. CERN spokesman James Gillies describes the accelerator. "This is a discovery machine. It's built to make discoveries and is going to tell us lots of new things about the universe." If all goes as planned, subatomic particles will be accelerated around the tunnel next year, eventually approach light speed, and smash into one another. Gillies adds, "To me the most exciting thing is that we know an awful lot about a small amount of the universe. We understand the stars, the galaxies, the stuff which makes up you and me, but we also know from cosmology that is ...

Violence in Thailand's Muslim South Intensifies - VOA Story

In Thailand's Muslim-dominated south, an increasingly violent insurgency is breeding fear and mistrust among neighbors, and government efforts to bring peace have made little progress. More than 2000 people have died since a Muslim insurgency flared up in 2004 in Thailand's Muslim-majority southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. While the majority of Thailand's 65 million people are Buddhists, around 1.3 million ethnic Malay Muslims live in the south. Most identify more with Muslim Malaysia and the Melayu language than with Thai Buddhists. Many have complained of discrimination and attempts at forced assimilation since Thailand annexed the region 100 years ago. The shadowy insurgents have never identified themselves nor made any public demands. Officials and analysts widely believe they want to establish a separate Islamic state. The insurgents attack symbols of the government, including the armed forces, schools, businesses, workers in critical industries such as rubber, and places deemed un-Islamic, like bars that serve alcohol. They also kill Muslims viewed as government collaborators. The insurgents, however, primarily target Buddhists in what is believed to be an attempt to drive them from the region. Officials estimate tens of thousands have fled. Many of the Buddhist temples here have closed and all are heavily guarded. The government that took power in a military coup last September vowed to make peace in the south a priority, but has made little ...

Little Rock 9 - 50th Anniversary - VOA Story

Fifty years ago, this Septermber 25, 2007, a high school in the US southern city of Little Rock, Arkansas became a crucial battleground in the struggle for civil rights. Despite prejudice and hostility from a mob of white demonstrators, nine black students attended their first full day of classes at previously all-white Central High School on September 25, 1957. Three years earlier, the US Supreme Court had ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. In Little Rock, high schools were to integrate by September 1957. Several weeks before school started, Arkansas's governor ordered the state militia to block the nine black students from entering the school. The US president stepped in and sent the army to escort them. Ernest Green, one of the Little Rock Nine, had not expected such stiff resistance, especially since some school districts in Arkansas had already admitted blacks. He says about 50 of the 2000 white students began a reign of terror in the school hallways. "In the beginning we had the military soldiers that served as our individual guards and went from class to class with us. After they left the inside of the school mid-year sometime, was when the hostility, violence and intimidation really increased. They began to intimidate those (white) students who tried to befriend us." The Little Rock Nine had volunteered to transfer from a local black school to one of the best high schools in the country. Chương trình học tiếng Anh của VOA: Special English Economics Report - Arab Spring / Investment. Xin hãy vào www.youtube.com để xem các bài kế tiếp. This is the VOA Special English Economics Report. The "Arab Spring" in the Middle East and North Africa has raised hopes and dreams. But can it raise money to invest in a better future? How to respond to the Arab uprisings was a major question for world leaders at the Group of 8 meeting in France in late May. Earlier, the head of the World Bank said international support can speed progress -- "but only if coupled with real reform." President Obama discussed American development plans in his Middle East policy speech on May nineteenth. He said: "The goal must be a model in which protectionism gives way to openness, the reins of commerce pass from the few to the many and the economy generates jobs for the young. America's support for democracy will therefore be based on ensuring financial stability, promoting reform and integrating competitive markets with each other and the global economy. And we are going to start with Tunisia and Egypt." Democracy protests in those two countries forced out their presidents early this year. The World Bank will offer Egypt four and a half billion dollars in loans over the next two years. The money would be part of a plan with the International Monetary Fund to help control Egypt's budget deficit. The goal is to improve the country's credit rating in order to ease the concerns of investors and ...

Minuteman Missile Site Now a National Park - VOA Story

A former Minuteman missile site in South Dakota is preserved and open to tourists for a fascinating look at the Cold War. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which US President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed in Moscow on July 31, 1991 reduced the number of ICBMs worldwide, the Air Force began deactivating the Nation's entire Minuteman II force. Among the Minuteman sites to be deactivated were the 150 missile silos and 15 launch control facilities of the 44th Missile Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB) in South Dakota. Soon after the deactivation began, the National Park Service and the Air Force recognized that Ellsworth AFB's Minuteman facilities might be excellent candidates for long-term preservation. The Ellsworth AFB sites are among the Nation's oldest Minuteman missile bases. They are also the least altered from the original Minuteman configuration, much of their technology dating to the era of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Thus, the end of the Cold War created a unique "window of opportunity" to preserve a historic Minuteman missile complex. Through an interagency agreement, the National Park Service and the Air Force agreed to temporarily preserve two representative Minuteman sites at Ellsworth AFB — the Delta One Launch Control Facility and the Delta Nine Launch Facility — until their long-term preservation could be evaluated. In December 1993, the National Park Service began a special resource study of Delta One and Delta Nine ...

Two of them, Middle East scholar Haleh Esfandiari and social scientist Kian Tajbakhsh, were paraded on Iranian state-run television and forced to confess to vague crimes against the state. The other two American citizens, journalist Parnaz Azima and peace activist Ali Shakeri, have also been charged with threatening Irans national security. The United States is calling on Irans Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to release all Americans currently being held on groundless charges. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the US is appalled at their mistreatment: www.voanews.com

New estimates show that more than one billion people have a physical or mental disability. Experts say almost one-fifth of them experience serious difficulties in their daily lives as a result of their disability. And disability rates are increasing as populations get older and more people get long-term conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. The estimates are in a report from the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The World Report on Disability says few countries do enough to meet the needs of the disabled. Ms. Lewis says people with disabilities helped write the new report. One of its messages is that people with disabilities should not only receive services -- they should also help design and provide them. Ms. Lewis says that way they can become decision makers and policy makers. "People with disabilities are a huge and untapped resource for governments, communities [and] development programs. And that is a big problem that we are working on addressing." Ms. Lewis ...

The spill happened downstream from Yellowstone National Park. The burst pipe spilled as much as one thousand barrels of crude oil -- more than one hundred sixty thousand liters -- into the river. Workers shut off the Exxon Mobil pipeline, and the company continued to clean up the spill. But the river was at flood levels and flowing quickly, carrying oil downstream into wetlands, fields and yards. Exxon Mobil spokeswoman Claire Hassett said local officials had ordered a temporary shutdown of the pipeline in May to check on its condition. They were concerned with heavy rains and rising waters. But, she said, "we determined that it was safe to operate and... we don't know what has caused this leak." Susan Casey-Lefkowitz is with the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group. She says the spill shows the dangers of mixing pipelines and waterways, "especially when they are running under some of our most precious river systems that are important not just for wildlife, but also for our communities. The Yellowstone River is critical for irrigation, for example, and so it serves the needs of a lot of farmers and communities along ...
