Una reconstrucción del lado oeste de la tumba de Nefertari, quizás la más conocida, nos sirve para apreciar su estructura. Ésta era igual a la que presentaban los enterramientos de los faraones: una serie de corredores y cámaras que se excavan en las laderas de las montañas, penetrando en ángulo oblicuo en su interior. La entrada se hacía por una escalera, que daba acceso a la antecámara, un vestíbulo y otra estancia adosada. Otro tramo en rampa conducía a la cámara funeraria, sostenida por 4 pilares. A esta cámara se le habían abierto pequeñas salas anexas, que servían de almacenes para las ofrendas funerarias. La capilla o cella, dedicada al culto, cierra la tumba. El esquema que seguía la tumba, con salas, corredores descendentes y cámara funeraria con anexos, reflejaba el itinerario del difunto en su camino hasta convertirse en divinidad.
