Classic Game Room HD reviews the VECTREX video game console from GCE (General Consumer Electric) from 1982. The Vectrex is unique in that is plays video games on its own screen with vector based graphics giving a very crisp image that fans of old school games from the late 70's and early 80's should enjoy. The Vectrex has some excellent games like Berzerk and Scramble, but not as many as the venerable Atari 2600 or ColecoVision. New games are being released for the Vectrex from homebrew developers and the game system is surprisingly easy to find and collect today thanks to eBay. Vectrex games come with an overlay that fits over the screen and gives a splash of color and lists the controls. Here's a video I made as a tribute to the Vectrex, with some nice music to go with it. The Vectrex was the first, and only, fully self contained vector-graphics home arcade system. It had a built in vector monitor and speaker so it didn't need a TV. It had zooming and rotation effects that were revolutionary for its days. The graphics were monochrome vector lines with tinted screen overlays which added the illusion of color. Released in 1982, the Vectrex features an intriguing built-in vector monitor (basically a normal CRT monitor with different control circuitry) that left the living room TV free for Dad to watch the first ever episode of Taggart. The display is strictly black and white, but by using the astonishingly MacGyver-esque technique of placing coloured plastic overlays on the screen you can make everything look a bit blue. So what games are there? A nifty rip-off of Asteroids called Mine Storm (just don't reach level 13). There's an overly leisurely version of Berzerk. Then there's Spike, a little star man equipped with River Dance jig and the ability to teleport ladders in his quest to save Molly from the evil Spud. And finally Star Ship. Yes you guessed it, nifty spaceships with magic hypnotizing square effects that I still don't understand despite playing it several times. As far as we know, this is the only video games console ever released that can cause permanent retina damage even if played on a moderate brightness setting. STARHAWK review. Classic Game Room reviews STARHAWK from Cinematronics released in 1982 for the mighty VECTREX video game system! Starhawk for Vectrex is like a never-ending trench battle scene on the Death Star from Star Wars. You move a targeting reticule around the screen with your Vectrex controller and blast alien space ships and asteroids for points. But time is running out! You have to score enough points to earn more time to keep playing. Starhawk can become frustrating because of the precision aiming required to get really big scores, but remains fun and playable because of it's smooth, familiar gameplay. Fans of Enduro on Atari 2600 will get a kick out of this arcade style racer where you get points for distance traveled and cars passed. Play a time trial mode where you drive the single segment of road for the best time. Hyperchase uses smooth vector based graphics to deliver an amazing driving experience from 1982 as you dodge oncoming vehicles with quick reaction times. This. Is. Vector Pilot. For the Vectrex! This game is a conversion of Time Pilot, and it is awesome. Here's the link to the designer's website, which you must check out to bask in the warm glow of Vectrex awesomeness, and also to inquire about purchasing Vector Pilot or another game, if you are interested. www.kristofsnewvectrexgames.comli.com Kristof Tuts did an amazing job recreating the Konami arcade classic for the Vectrex. Time Pilot is one of my favorite arcade games. Might be my favorite arcade game ever. Maybe. I don't know. I do know that I really enjoy it. And I enjoy Vector Pilot. A lot. There is so much happening on screen, the graphics are great, the sounds are accurate and awesome, the overlays are superb, everything about Vector Pilot is fantastic! The game has a calibration mode so you can adjust the screen center and progress bar at the top so that they align properly with the overlay, and the cartridge stores this setting so you don't have to calibrate it every time you play. The cart also retains you top 9 high scores! As far as how faithful the gameplay is to the original...I would say it is very faithful. Some minor differences that I've noticed are....the enemies in the 1940 stage are able to drop bombs but they aren't able to in the arcade. Also, when you die, when you regain control of your ship, the enemies will begin attacking immediately, whereas in the arcade there is a slight pause before they attack. One other difference is that it seems like <b>...</b>

Classic Game Room HD reviews the SEGA GENESIS VECTREX CONTROLLER, a Sega Genesis controller modified to play on the GCE Vectrex arcade system! This hardware review features a modded Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) controller that fits into the Vectrex controller ports. Not an "official" product, this recycled controller has a bit shaved off the plug which allows it to fit the Vectrex, and the buttons have been configured to play Vectrex games. The start button on the Genesis controller has been made to work as a Vectrex button. This review of the Vectrex Sega Genesis controller shows this controller being used to play several Vectrex games including Berzerk, Scramble, Web Wars, Solar Quest and Hyper Chase. The d-pad does not have analog controls so gameplay with games like Hyperchase that require Vectrex analog control don't work well.

Classic Game Room HD reviews ARMOR ATTACK for Vectrex from 1982. Armor Attack was originally from Cinematronics, Incorporated and released in the arcades in 1980 as a stand up, coin-op arcade machine. Armor Attack plays well on the Vectrex with one button firing and the other working the gas, the remaining two buttons on the Vectrex controller steer but they are useless because the joystick also steers (and does it better). The Armor Attack overlay is boring and merely colors the lines green while adding some junk onto the screen representing a town. Those who enjoy Combat on the Atari 2600 may get a kick out of the GCE version of tank / jeep based combat. Not a clone of Combat, Armor Attack plays like a cross between Berzerk and Asteroids, with enemies attack from the sides and a pesky helicopter that flies in like Evil Otto. Classic Game Room HD reviews MINE STORM for Vectrex from 1982. Mine Storm is a built in game for the Vectrex (at least for my unit) and is similar to Asteroids with elements of Geometry Wars. It plays on the Vectrex with vector based graphics and uses a screen overlay to give some style and show the button layout for the Vectrex controller. Shoot bad guys in space and avoid the nasties that try and chase you around the screen. Mine Story is an excellent arcade game that feels like an arcade game when played on the Vectrex with the awesome controller. For starters you are playing as a vacuum cleaner in a bank surrounded by criminals. Vector graphics and awesome sounds make this a must have for Pac Man fever maniacs who just can't get enough Pac Man. Clean Sweep from GCE is on the Vectrex, the vector graphics video game system from the early 80's. Clean Sweep is an old school arcade style video game with a screen overlay and lots of charm. This CGRHD review has gameplay from Clean Sweep on the Vectrex showing game play and screen footage from the game cartridge. This is a must play for retro gamers.

Classic Game Room HD reviews BERZERK for Vectrex from 1982. This is a unique version of the amazing Berzerk arcade game because it is a vector graphics video game. Gameplay is very similar to the Atari 2600 cartridge except this has less variations in gameplay. While my controller is a bit buggy the controls themselves are good. All four buttons shoot. Shoot everything that moves except Evil Otto... run away from him. Vectrex video games are unique and lots of fun to collect. This version of Berzerk has a plain screen overlay but looks awesome.
