Bryn Terfel - Ave Verum Corpus, K618 - Mozart

Ave verum corpus is a short Eucharistic hymn dating from the 14th century and attributed to Pope Innocent VI (d. 1362), which has been set to music by various composers. During the Middle Ages it was sung at the elevation of the host during the consecration. It was also used frequently during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymn's title means "Hail, true body", and is based on a poem deriving from a 14th-century manuscript from the Abbey of Reichenau, Lake Constance. The poem is a meditation on the Catholic belief in Jesus's Real Presence in the sacrament of the Eucharist, and ties it to Catholic ideas on the redemptive meaning of suffering in the life of all believers. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's setting of Ave Verum Corpus was written in 1791, to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi. ********* The text is in Latin, and reads: Ave verum corpus, Natum de Maria Virgine, Vere passum, immolatum In cruce pro homine, Cuius latus perforatum Unda fluxit et sanguine, Esto nobis praegustatum In mortis examine. A translation into English is: Hail the true body, Born of the Virgin Mary, Truly suffered, sacrificed On the Cross for mankind, Whose pierced side Flowed with water and blood, Let it be for us, in consideration, A foretaste of death. ********* (This information has been adapted from Wikipedia)

Mozart Ave Verum Corpus

Mozart wrote Ave Verum Corpus in June 1791 while visiting his wife Constanze in Baden where she was having treatment for her health. Mozart adored Constanze and shortly after returning to Vienna alone, leaving her in Baden, he wrote her deeply moving letters saying how much he missed her: "You cannot imagine how slowly time goes when you are not with me. There is a sense of emptiness, which hurts, a certain longing which cannot be satisfied. When I remember how childishly merry we were in Baden, and what mournful, tedious hours I pass here, my work gives me no pleasure because it is not possible as was my want to chat a few words with you when stopping for a moment". To his father Leopold, who disapproved of his son marrying Constanze, Mozart simply stated in 1781: "I love her and she loves me." Wolfgang Amade (as he usually referred to himself) and Constanze had 6 children: Raimund, Karl Thomas, Johann, Theresia, Anna Maria and Franz Xaver, only two of whom survived infancy, Karl Thomas (1784-1858) and Franz Xaver (1791-1844). Many years after Mozart's early death Constanze was asked why she never had children in her second marriage (Constanze outlived Mozart by over 50 years) to which she replied that Mozart was "my one true passionate love".
