stanley5.blogspot.com 史丹利五製作Vetiver & Hope Sandoval - Angels' Share Andy Cabic grew up in northern Virginia and spent a few years in Greensboro, North Carolina, playing guitar, writing music and recording as a member of the Raymond Brake. After moving to San Francisco, Cabic joined the rock band Tussle, simultaneously recruiting other local musicians including cellist Alissa Anderson, troubadour Devendra Banhart, along with special guests Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and the then-unknown Joanna Newsom among others to record Vetiver. The album was released in 2004 to high critical praise from around the world Like an album of dreamy, gentle songs that George Harrison would have written in some sunny country garden. There's hypnotic finger-picking on guitar, a warm steady drone of cello. The band includes neo-folkie mystic Devendra Banhart, who does minimal singing and songwriting for the most part, but one can hear the aesthetic of Banhart's music here, even if the songs aren't as haunting. The high point is probably "Angel's Share," a lovely song that has Hope Sandoval from the band Mazzy Star singing languid and sweet harmony vocals. There's also a winning and odd swooning eulogy to the Seattle Arboretum. Vetiver covers Hawkwind's Hurry on Sundown from their self titled album. You can find this song on Vetiver's album titled A Thing of the Past. Video shown is from the short film "Social Seminar: Tom (1972)". This film follows Tom, a 26-year-old who has dropped out and has dropped everything, LSD, mescaline, psilocybin and some things familiar only to obscure chemists in Berkeley. Hassan Ali is a farmer in western Ethiopia who has led the way in using vetiver grass and the Vetiver System for soil and water conservation. He has increased crop yield by 30% stopped erosion, and improved groundwater. He has taught at least 100 other farmers how to use the Vetiver System, and has provided plant material to get them started. The extra wealth that he has created has enabled him to send two sons to University.

The Vetiver System has been successfully used in Ethiopia for Soil and Water Conservation for nearly 20 years. it was introduced by an Austrian NGO - Menschen fur Menschen - to farmers in Illubabor Province. Currently over 20000 farmers are using Vetiver System for erosion control and crop yield improvement. The technology has been promoted by the NGO SLUF - Ethiopia Sustainable Land Use Forum - and from farmer to farmer. Vetiver is being used in many other Ethiopian provinces, and the same practices could be followed in other African countries.
