The last Vickers Viscount passenger flight to Jersey 1996
On the 8th June 1996 the last Vickers Viscount passenger flight to Jersey took place. The last flight was an 'enthusiast's charter' organised by the Friends of Viscount Stephen Piercey in conjunction with British World Airlines and flew to Jersey from Southend. The Viscount had been a part of the commercial aviation scene in Jersey for over 40 years, travelling between the island and the mainland with holiday makers. Over the years the island has been served by Viscounts from various airlines including British European Airways, British Midland Airways, British United Airways and British Air Ferries / British World Airlines. It was not an uncommon sight to see up to ten Viscounts together on the ramp at Jersey. The aircraft used was G-APEY a Viscount, 806, which was originally built for BEA and first flew from Brooklands in 1968. The aircraft was the last passenger Viscount in service in Europe. All profits from the flights went towards the continued preservation of another important Viscount. This is Vickers V-806 Viscount G-APIM Stephen Piercey at Brooklands, which keeps alive the name of Stephen a gifted photographer from nearby Addlestone. Stephen's great love was Aeroplanes but especially Prop liners and it was the magazine of that name that he founded. Vickers Vanguard lands at Brooklands -- The incredible story
On the 17th of October 1996 the worlds only surviving Vanguard (Merchantman) G-APEP made its last ever flight into Brooklands. This may not seem very surprising as Vanguards flew in and out of Brooklands all the time, back in the days when they were building them there. However, now the Runway had been cut in half by the new road - Wellington Way. Also, the airfield had not been an operational field for many years and offered many challenges to the brave crew! At the time I was Managing director of National Rescue and had been planning to movie the aircraft by road. I was very pleased when Peter and Gary said the could fly it in. So they went off and practised short landings at the Aircrafts base at East Midlands Airport, while we put a plan together to close a busy industrial estate down, while they landed. This video shows you what happened on the day, from my vantage point up in the Control Tower.

The design originated from the Air Ministry Specification G.4/31 which called for a General Purpose aircraft, capable of carrying out level bombing, army co-operation, dive bombing, reconnaissance, casualty evacuation and torpedo bombing. The Vickers Type 253 (using a radical geodetic construction that was derived from that used by Barnes Wallis in the airship R100 in the fuselage structure), the Fairey G.4/31, Westland PV-7, Handley Page HP.47, Armstrong Whitworth AW19, Blackburn B-7, Hawker PV4 and the Parnall G.4/31 offerings were tested against the specification. The Type 253, was declared the winner, with 150 being ordered. The Vickers Type 246 monoplane, which used the same geodetic design principles for both the fuselage and wings, was then built as a private venture, first flying on the 19 June 1935 and offered to the RAF. This had superior performance, but did not attempt to meet the multi-role requirements of the specification, being designed as a bomber only. An initial order for 96 Type 246s was substituted for the Type 253 order. The RAF ultimately ordered a total of 176 as the Wellesley, to a newly written specification 22/35. The Wellesley was a single-engined monoplane with a very high aspect ratio wing, and a manually operated, retractable undercarriage. As it was not known how the geodetic structure could cope with being disrupted by a bomb bay, the Wellesley's bomb load was carried in two panniers under the wings. Hangar T374 built in the sixties as final assembly for the VC10 Aircraft. It was next to another giant hanger and they were known unofficially as the The Abbey and The Cathedral T374 had a floor space in excess of 10000Sq meters Before it was sadly demolished in 1986 I was able to film a little of the inside. It was a basic hand held camera, so sorry about the shakes. The building last function was to be used for filming flying sequences in the film Flash Gordon.

Romain Tranchart (born on June 9, 1976, in Paris) first moved with his family to Mexico and Algeria, to finally live in Brazil. This is where he started learning the guitar, finding inspiration through jazz classics. He was also exposed to Bossa Nova but chose another direction, playing in a rock band called Seven Tracks once back in Paris[citation needed]. After a few gigs in Parisian clubs La Loco and Le Grand Rex, the band split. At that time, he became a fan of house music, influenced by DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, and Daft Punk. He released his first house single as Funk Legacy titled "What You're Gonna Do, Baby" on Vertigo Records in 1998. Later, he decided to enter the American School of Modern Music in Paris, the French division of the Berklee School of Music. Also Parisian, Yann learned to play flute and clarinet when he was a small child. As he aged he became deeply influenced by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, David Bowie and other pop acts. www.henrytenby.com In the mid 1990s, most of the freight that passed through Coventry's night-time freight hub was transported aboard vintage propliners, including Vickers Viscounts and at the time, the world's last operational Vickers Vanguard. The frenzied, nocturnal, propliner activities which took place from this humble, ramshackle rural location, were captured by aviation videographer Henry Tenby, during several visits in 1995 and 1996. This DVD program features 116 solid minutes of ear-piercing Viscount and Vanguard action, with lots of start ups, taxiing aircraft, landings and take-offs, and engine shut downs. Professionally filmed up close (with tripod) on the apron at Coventry, during busy night-time freight operations. We also go for a cockpit flight on the world's last in-service Vickers Vanguard (Hunting Cargo's G-APEP) from Liverpool to Belfast, as well as a day-time flight on British World Viscount G-BFZL from Belfast to Coventry, with footage from both the cabin and the flight-deck. Who can ever forget the sound of four Darts or Tynes winding up, or throttling up for take-off power. This DVD forever preserves the memories of these wonderful, graceful British marques.
