Vincent Laforet First Look: Jamie O'Brien

This video is owned by Vincent Laforet. The song is Heaven Hammer (Missing air Remix) by Beck. Vincent Laforet: "Here is a first look at the Jamie OBrien project. This is a reel of some of the best shots from the 3 week project. I would like to point out that this first look does not reflect our ultimate goal of producing a more in depth documentary that includes interviews with Jamie and other influential members of the surfing community. One of the reasons that its taken me this long to get this short cut up on the blog is that weve been working on the two cuts simultaneously. My goal all along has been to NOT make yet another surf film as those have already been made and made very well by some incredibly talented filmmakers - and shot over a much longer period of time where budgets and time allow the filmmakers to wait for the perfect conditions / swell. During the 3 weeks in Hawaii - we probably saw 5 days of sun, and 2-3 days of decent (but relatively small) waves. I was well aware of some of these challenges (weather is always a huge factor when shooting in the winter months in Hawaii) and made a point from the beginning to draw upon my experience as a photojournalist to work towards producing a different type of film. I hope to be able to share that with you at some point in the upcoming months. For now I hope youll enjoy this first look. I look forward to getting back to writing more regularly on this blog now that this cut is done. A huge thanks goes out to all ...

Short Film --- The Cabbie by Vincent Laforet --- Cannon 7d

Short Film --- Chapter 1: The Cabbie by Vincent Laforet When I was asked to interpret this still, a thousand different ideas flooded my mind. I wanted to create a dynamic film that took the audience on a journey and showed off the many strengths of this new breed of HD DSLR cameras, such as the Canon 7D, which we shot this film with. The camera's low light capabilities and light weight allow you to do things you'd never think to try with traditional cameras. This has been an amazing experience and it's just the beginning. I hope you enjoy this short - we had a blast making it!

Cinema 5D Interview With Vincent Laforet.

Vincent Laforet was gracious enough to let me interview him while he was prepping for a big shoot in Italy. His crew was hard at work prepping all of the equipment for the trip. There was a ton of equipment all over the place. A Full set of Zeiss CP.2 Primes and the new Zeiss 15.5-45mm Lightweight Zoom. Prior to the interview Stacy, the lens technician over at Birns and Sawyer, Hollywood hooked me up with a Zeiss CP.2 Prototype 50mm Macro lens. Prototype #003 (See Photo). This even got Vince's attention. I used it to shoot the single of Vince in the interview. I had met Vince at NAB and wanted to follow up with a more relaxed interview here in Hollywood. He was kind enough to break away from the prep and answer a few questions. I really wanted to stay away from gear talk and focus more on his process. He gives us great insight into how he makes the magic happen. Thank You to Vince and his Crew for taking the time for this interview.

"The i1Xtreme calibrates everything in my studio: monitors, printers, projectors, scanners and cameras. Calibrating the display is probably the single most important part so that I can guarantee that the vision I had in the field translates into the end result. This image was taken in Wiamea, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We had about fifteen minutes where the sun broke through the really heavy cloud cover, and the horse just radiated this golden light. By having a completely calibrated workflow, I was able to deliver the best quality image possible. The i1Xtreme is absolutely essential for the way I work." -- Vincent LaForet

Vincent Laforet: Jamie O'brien Backdoor Switchfoot

This video is owned by Vincent Laforet. I had to do an audio swap, but the original music is by TI See this in 1080p at blog.vincentlaforet.com Vincent Laforet: "Creativity in surfing is the opportunity to express oneself on a wave. Surfing is nothing but the physical extension of ones ability to explore that realm between land and sea. Being free to do it without the constraints of commercial endeavor or competitive goals creates true freedom of expression. Somewhere between the land and the sea Jamie tries the other side, switching his feet around on take off, choosing the opposite stance, then midway, switches back as if to say I can do whatever I like. Jamie embodies the term free surfer. The best thing about watching, let alone filming, Jamie - is the privilege of seeing someone do something so beautiful, so difficult, so effortlessly. The last time I saw something like this on such a regular basis was when I photographed Michael Jordan at the United Center in Chicago for his last 3 years on the court. This shot was made with a Canon 500mm f4 - on a RED One at 100 frames per second at 2K using the Wicked Circuits EF Lens Adapter. Thats the equivalent of a 1600mm on a 35mm camera. Big thanks to Mike Isler for the focus pull and spotting." See this in 1080p at blog.vincentlaforet.com

Photography Tips from Commercial Photographer Vincent Laforet

www.silberstudios.tv Commercial photographer Vincent Laforet joins us today on the Marc Silber show to talk about his approach to photography. He provides us with photography techniques and tips for both amateurs and professionals alike. For six years, Vince was a photojournalist for the New York Times, where he worked on a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its 9 coverage. As a photojournalist, Vince often had to choose a single image that most accurately captured the essence of an event. He advises people to put the camera down, walk around, and ask themselves a series of questions, such as "What really is special about this place?" Learning about the history of a photo shoot location or finding the best time of day for shadows and lighting is just as important for creating a great photo composition. When looking through the lens, a photographer needs to make sure that a photo will elicit emotions and thoughts. Vince points out that many people romanticize the life of a photographer - they forget about the preparation and packing of equipment that accompanies every photo shoot. Carrying too much equipment slows down the photographer and may result in missed images and opportunities, not enough and you can also miss shots, so do your research and be prepared including your memory cards.
