Born Free Trailer

This is a trailer I produced for interactive TV network Intertainer several years ago. The film stars Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers. It won 2 Oscars (Best Score, Best Song). The trailer was written by Robin Thompson (who cleverly used a character's own narration as the trailer's voiceover) and edited by Marcos Soriano. The trailer features Matt Monro's Oscar-winning title song.

After Violette Szabo's (Virginia McKenna) French husband is killed in North Africa during World War II, she is amazed to find herself seconded to the British secret service, and agrees to undertake resistance work in France. Subjected to rigorous training, she is put through a rite of passage in which she has to learn to fight and think like a man. She is parachuted into enemy territory and proves herself a valuable and resourceful agent. After her mission to Rouen, Vi meets up with her control, Tony (Paul Scofield), in Paris and reports on her difficulties during the mission. Its success is emphasised when Tony tells her that its aim - the destruction of the viaduct - was achieved. But this is not just a professional meeting; Tony makes his love for her clear. On a second mission, Vi is captured when her ammunition runs out. The German interrogator reminds her: 'what will become of your child if you die?', before offering her new clothes and fun, 'you're young, you're attractive and you're in Paris.' Violette slaps him. After physical torture, memories of her husband Etienne prove an even greater temptation. The final scenes of the film, in which Vi is tortured, taken to a prison camp and finally shot are punctuated by close-ups of her translucent skin, her cheekbones sharp and her fair hair pushed away to reveal her drawn features. 'Lady in Waiting' - Drag Queen Rescues Old Lady in a New York Black Out!

Seemingly lost Virginia McKenna short film - 1992. Written & Directed by Christian Taylor. Although this was Oscar nominated, it appears to have been almost forgotten, it's neither on her IMDB or Wiki listing - but here it is, and in not too bad a condition either. With Rodney Hudson starring along side her in this charming & quirky short, set amidst swinging 1970's New York, and during a black out. It's definitely worth 30 minutes of your life, although what it's about will be left up to you. For me it's an 'It's never too late' allegory & also maybe you should be yourself right from the start lesson, so as not to waste your life waiting - but I leave it to you. Enjoy! This doesn't appear to be available to buy or watch anywhere, so I hope the owners are happy to see it here!

But within a few months, rapidly outgrowing his surroundings Christian needed a new home - life in a Zoo looked on the cards for him. But a chance meeting with actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, stars of the hit 1966 film Born Free about lion expert and conservationist George Adamson, took Christian's life off in a totally different direction. Elsa: The Lioness that changed the World Part 1

In the 1960s, 'Born Free' captured the world's imagination with the story of Elsa, an orphaned lioness who was taken in by George and Joy Adamson and returned to a life in the wild. The book and film sparked a new love of nature that has blossomed ever since, but the true story of what happened afterwards was far more tragic as both George and Joy were murdered.Fifty years on, this emotional and revealing drama documentary re-lives those events - with intimate contributions from Virginia McKenna and David Attenborough.

Christian the lion - Full ending

In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast... A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. This clip is of their reunion at that time. It was an emotional reunion: "He ran towards us, threw himself onto us, knocked us over and hugged us, with his paws on our shoulders." John Rendall Christian's story. Directed by Bill Travers, commentary by Virgina McKenna, founders of the Born Free Foundation. See www.bornfree.org.uk for more about this story. London Transport bus STL469 - Film Star!

"Carve her name with pride", directed by Lewis Gilbert and released in February 1958, told the true story of Violette Szabo in World War II. With Virginia Mckenna in the lead role, the opening scenes show Violette meeting an old school friend (played by Miriam Karlin), working as a bus conductress. For added authenticity the producers sort out a genuine older bus, STL 469 of 1934 vintage, that had been retained by London Transport on its withdrawl in March 1954 to join its museum fleet. By 1958 the vast majority of the 2700 STL buses had been broken up, although a few were still running with various operators around the country so finding an STL other than the officially preserved example would have been difficult although not quite impossible. Happily STL 469 still exists and is one of only four survivors of this large fleet of vehicles (some others also exist having been converted to lorries etc). Enthusiasts will realise that the bus is painted in the 1950 "all red" livery, incorrect for wartime, but an attempt has been made to produce wartime conditions by the addition of netting across the windows. The film has been released by Network, and is available to buy on dvd in the UK.
