IELTS reading - understanding unknown vocabulary

Visit www.IELTStestONLINE.com for our complete online study course, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary lessons, as well as essential academic skills like punctuation, linking words and up to 12 complete practice tests. Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: A common difficulty in the IELTS reading test is when you find a word that you do not recognise. Many candidates make the mistake of spending some considerable time reading the word and the sentence it is in trying to understand what it means. This, of course, takes valuable time and may not necessarily improve your result. However, there are seven different points that you could consider to help you deal with unknown vocabulary. The first point is that, on occasion, you will find that the reading passage has a glossary at the end, describing two or three of the key words. If there is a glossary, then you should make sure to read it carefully, as if it was important enough to give you a glossary, then the words are probably required for one or more of your answers. If there is no glossary or it doesn't explain the word you were looking at, another point to consider is whether it begins with a capital letter or is in italics. If it starts with a capital letter, then the word is probably a proper noun, for example a place or a person's name. If the word is in italics, it is probably a technical word which you are not expected to know. Here are some ...

Going to the Toilet | Learn English | Vocabulary

EXTRAS: linguaspectrum.com Here is a subject you won't find in any detail in any of your English textbooks. It's strange really, when you consider that each and every one of us does this at least once or twice a day. Yet many people, and the English in particular, are rather embarrassed when talking about going to the toilet. The English, being somewhat reluctant to admit that they do go to the toilet, have invented many expressions to sanitise this rather natural bodily function. Perhaps it is this embarrassment about our natural bodily functions that makes toilet humour so popular in Hollywood movies and for stand-up comedians. But this is not a modern phenomenon, this aversion to accept our body's natural processes. Around 1781, Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay entitled, Fart Proudly, in which he suggested to the Royal Academy of Brussels that research ought to be undertaken into ways of improving the odour of the human fart. Raucously funny, the essay has nevertheless been excluded from most published collections of Franklin's writings. I fully expect this video to upset my more genteel viewers, so don't be shy in complaining about the content in the comments below the video. Let's take a look at some of this vocabulary that you won't easily find elsewhere. When I was in the military, I once told our appalling army chef that he was a genius. He was a genius, I told him, because it took the human body 24 hours to turn good food into shit, whereas he could do it in ...
