Saul Williams played to a jubilant and diverse crowd at London's Hoxton Bar Kitchen, Jan 26th, 2011. The show had been sold out for sometime and the resulting sardine syndrome shellacked the atrium as Saul went through new album 'Volcanic Sunlight' sprinkled with poems past. We asked Saul what he thought the point of poetry was. Before admitting the he was speaking 'extemporaneously' he went on at some length musing over well.....the muse: "I'm making this up, I have no fucking idea but here we go, I think that it would be to express, to share, to relieve, to explore", "for me poetry offers some what of a cathartic experience. I am able to move through emotions and emotional experience particularly, you know, break-ups, difficulties in all the things that I may face, whether that is with an industry or a loved one or whomever, there needs to be an infiltration process like you have a window open over there. That is the purpose of poetry - it is the window that opens that allows some air in, some other insight, some other possibility so we can explore all that we feel, all that we think but with the space to see more than what we know, because there is so much more than we know.", "If I didn't open myself to the possibilities of the unknown then I would be lost."

The eruption of a volcano in the Eyjafjallajoekull area has produced a vast ash cloud, blocking out sunlight in the region. The eruption under a glacier is the second in Iceland in less than a month. A TV crew managed to drive through the ash to the east of the glacier volcano. The cloud was so dense it blotted out the sun.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is a volcano located in the north of Tanzania and is part of the volcanic system of the Great Rift Valley in Eastern Africa. It is located in the eastern Rift Valley, south of both Lake Natron and Kenya. It is unique among active volcanoes in that it produces natrocarbonatite lava, a unique occurrence of volcanic carbonatite. Further, the temperature of its lava as it emerges is only around 510 °C (950 °F). A few older extinct carbonatite volcanoes are located nearby, including Homa Mountain. Geology "Ol Doinyo Lengai" means "Mountain of God" in the Maa language of the native Maasai people. The record of eruptions on the mountain dates to 1883, and flows were also recorded between 1904 and 1910 and again between 1913 and 1915. A major eruption took place in June 1917, which resulted in volcanic ash being deposited about 48 kilometres away. A similar eruption took place for several months in 1926 and between July and December 1940, resulting in the ash being deposited as far as Loliondo, which is 100 kilometres away. Several minor eruptions of lava were observed in 1954, 1955, 1958 the early 1960s. When Ol Doinyo Lengai erupted on August 14, 1966, two geologists — JB Dawson and GC Clark — who visited the crater a week later, reported seeing "a thick column of black ash" that rose for approximately three thousand feet above the volcano and drifted away northwards towards Lake Natron. When the two climbed the cone-shaped vent, they reported seeing a ...

Michio Kaku speaks with FOX Business (April 21st) on the risks of neighboring volcanoes being triggered by Eyjafjallajokull.

Our trip to Mount Yasur involved a 90 minute drive across the island of Tanna. We travelled by 4WD - the vehicles were converted from 5 seats to 7 seats by the ingenious tying down of a fairly comfortable lounge suite into the tray of the vehicle. The back seat passengers merely needed to brace themselves against the rugged twists and bumps of the road across the island. The lava fields of the volcano stretched over 5 or 6 kilometres downwind of the volcanic cone. Something not captured on the video were the amazing glass rods exuded from the volcano. These were like strands of optical fibre scattered all over the base of the cone, glittering in the sunlight. travelling to and from the volcano we stopped to pick upand deposit villagers. Every vehicle on Tanna is an impromtu taxi - a fantastic system whereby people can get a lift with anyone heading in their direction. Not so unusual on an island of only 20000 people The first song on this video is called "Niukilili" and the second song is "Bu Riki", both performed by the Fatumanu Cultural Group. This video immediately precedes "Mount Yasur - Our visit to an active volcano" also on my page.

Looks like the end of the world was delayed by only one day. this was taken May 22 at 9 PM when it would be perfect sunlight in Iceland. This was quite close to Seljalandsfoss, 120 km to the East of Reykjavik and more than 200 km away from Vatnajökull, where the eruption is. It was also slightly raining, which made visibility worse.

My Second Video ever made. Made in 3rd grade. =) Smog hanging over cities is the most familiar and obvious form of air pollution. But there are different kinds of pollution—some visible, some invisible—that contribute to global warming. Generally any substance that people introduce into the atmosphere that has damaging effects on living things and the environment is considered air pollution. Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is the main pollutant that is warming Earth. Though living things emit carbon dioxide when they breathe, carbon dioxide is widely considered to be a pollutant when associated with cars, planes, power plants, and other human activities that involve the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and natural gas. In the past 150 years, such activities have pumped enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to raise its levels higher than they have been for hundreds of thousands of years. Other greenhouse gases include methane—which comes from such sources as swamps and gas emitted by livestock—and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were used in refrigerants and aerosol propellants until they were banned because of their deteriorating effect on Earth's ozone layer. Another pollutant associated with climate change is sulfur dioxide, a component of smog. Sulfur dioxide and closely related chemicals are known primarily as a cause of acid rain. But they also reflect light when released in the atmosphere, which keeps sunlight out and causes Earth to cool. Volcanic ...

What Impact Would Sun Dimming Have on Earth's Weather? * Source: Wiley * Posted Monday, January 24, 2011 Could Dimming the Sun Change Teleconnections in Weather Patterns as we Know Them? Solar radiation management projects, also known as sun dimming, seek to reduce the amount of sunlight hitting the Earth to counteract the effects of climate change. Global dimming can occur as a side-effect of fossil fuels or as a result of volcanic eruptions, but the consequences of deliberate sun dimming as a geoengineering tool are unknown. A new study by Dr Peter Braesicke, from the Centre for Atmospheric Science at Cambridge University, seeks to answer this question by focusing on the possible impacts of a dimming sun on atmospheric teleconnections. Teleconnections, important for the predictability of weather regimes, are the phenomenon of distant climate anomalies being related to each other at large distances, such as the link between sea-level pressure at Tahiti and Darwin, Australia, which defines the Southern Oscillation. "It is important that we look for unintended consequences of any sun dimming schemes," said Braesicke. "We have to test our models continuously against observations to make sure that they are 'fit-for-purpose', and it's important that we should not only look at highly averaged 'global' quantities." Dr Braesicke's team believes that the link between tropical temperatures and extra-tropical circulation are well captured for the recent past and that the link ...

In the ocean, there are places where it looks like it is snowing. These magical places are near undersea volcanic activity. The snow particles are clumps of bacteria that use chemicals to make food. Chemicals they use include hydrogen sulfide, which is toxic to virtually all other life. Most other ecosystems on earth depend on organisms that require sunlight to create food. Vents release hot water, minerals, and chemicals from beneath hardened lava. The fluid is almost 30 degrees F warmer than the surrounding water. The bacteria live beneath the seafloor and are also released from the vent. These tiny one-celled microbes provide food for many animals. A thick mat of white bacteria builds up; little worms and crustaceans feed on it. Nearby, "black smoker" vents may form when vents spew minerals in water up to 750 degrees F. In time, an amazingly robust community with thousands of animals flourishes here. This video was recorded 480 km (300 miles) west of the Oregon coast at 1516 m (4974 ft) depth with remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts.

For a real experience in contrast, visit the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, "The Land of Fire and Ice." Situated on the Continental Divide you walk through the twisted, old-growth Juniper, Fir and Ponderosa Pine trees, over the ancient lava trail to the Ice Cave. Here the natural layers of ice glisten blue-green in the reflected rays of sunlight. Another trail winds around the side of the Bandera Volcano to view one of the best examples of a volcanic eruption in the country.
