White Nights Baryshnikov (Vysotsky "Horses")

Nikolai Rochenko (Baryshnikov) is a Russian ballet dancer who 8 years earlier had defected to the West. He is in a plane flying over Russia when a malfunction forces the plane to land in Russia where the authorities hold him. Galina Ivanova (Helen Mirren) is in cahoots with the KGB to convince Rochenko to stay in the country and take up his former position as a celebrated Russian dancer. In this scene she describes what his life could in Russia but Rochenko counters that he wants to be free and scream what he feels, like Vysotsky (the singer) does in his songs. She is overcome not only by recognizing the strength of Rochenkos argument but by the artistry and liberation of his dance.

Vladimir Vysotsky - Your Friend | "Песня про друга"

Song by Vladimir Vysotsky. English translation by Alex Sokolov. Original title "Песня про друга" - 'Pesnya pro druga'. If your friend appeared to be Neither friend nor enemy And you don't know Is he good or bad Take a risk take the guy uphills Never let him to be alone Let him always be roped to you You will see what he is If uphill he is no good Gets off colour and rushes back Step on ice and looks not so nice Makes a wrong step and cries He's an alien man to you Don't reprove him this is no use Such people don't go uphills And nobody sings about them If he didn't whimper or whine Gloomy, sullen but moved uphills And the moment you fell from hills He was groaning and holding the rope If he attacked the hill with you Stood at the top light headed Then as you rely on yourself You can rely on him.

"Morning gymnastics" Vladimir Vysotsky

Утренняя гимнастика - Morning Gymnastics Владимир Высоцкий - Vladimir Vysotsky Take a deep breath, put your arms farther out, Don't hurry, - three - four! Cheerful morale, grace and elasticity! Overall strengthening, And in the morning sobering, If you're still alive - Gymnastics! If you are in your apartment, Lay down on the floor - three - four! Carry out the exercize correctly! Get away from outside influences - Get used to the novelty, Take a deep breath and hold it As long as possible! All over the world the influenza virus Has spread - three - four! Illnesses spread and grow. If you are sickly - you go right away to a coffin! Guard your health Change your hankies! If you are already tired - Squat - stand, squat - stand, Aren't the Artic and Antarctic frightening to you! Chief Academician Joffe Has shown: coffee and booze Are to be traded for prophy-lactic sports! It's not necessary to talk about it Squat down until you fall, Now don't be glum and gloomy! If you don't know how Take off what you have to, And take part in aquatic procedures! Bad news isn't terrifying In response we run in place, Even the beginner wins. The beauty of it is that amoung the runners There is no first or last place, Running in place is an example to the community! Inhale deeply, arms - out more, Do not hurry - three and four! Grace and pliability are emphasized! All around conditioning, And hangover quickening, If you're still alive and fidgeting - Exercise! If you're working out at home ...

Vladimir Vysotsky: people shone when they stood next to him

On January 25 Russia celebrates the 70th anniversary since the birth of probably the most popular figure of Russian culture of the second half of the 20th century. Vladimir Vysotsky, who died untimely in 1980, was a poet, actor and interpreter of his own songs. Thousands of Muscovites left the stadiums (as it was the time of the Olympic Games) to attend the funeral. It was later estimated that over one million people attended Vysotsky's funeral, almost as many as that of Pope John Paul II in 2005. Vladimir's son, Nikita is in our studio to tell us about his father.

Vladimir Vysotsky - The Ballad of the fight (eng sub)

This is my first video. Please do not do not much blame for the inaccurate translation, in Russian language does not matter the order of words in a sentence, moreover, it gives the phrase change this or that emotional. But I tried, especially for foreign nationals who speak English and to explore with the Russian culture:)

Chernye Bushlaty - Vysotsky (English + Russian subtitles)

If in my page display window, click on the link immediately above for video page with subtitles button. Thanks to Pustinnik25 for the video. The translation is mine. I misunderstood this song for years, thinking it was another labour camp song. The convicts do wear a thick coat (bushlat), but here it is military. The song is dedicated to the 700 paratroopers who attacked Evpatoriya in the Crimea in 1942 to draw German forces away from besieged Kherson. Less than 100 men returned. A new computer game has brought these events into the minds of the young and I hope that they remember the selfless sacrifices of the Russian army to defend their homeland. I hope they don't fall into the trap of tub-thumping pseudo-religious nationalism - "God is with Russia" etc. It may be a cliche, but I believe in the pan-European anti-war workers movement. My own great uncle risked his life to bring supplies to Murmansk and Malta. For working class folk like him, it wasn't about politics, it was about defending your home. And that unites us, Brits and Russian - don't trust the politicians, but you can rely on our armed forces for their bravery and skill.

Vladimir Vysotsky: Last Interview + "Horses" | Heb Subtitles

Horses - English Translated from the Russian By the cliff, along the precipice, right over deadly ground, With the whip, I strike my steeds; strike them hard to urge them forward. I am getting short on air, gulp the haze, drink the wind, yet With a fatal rapture, sensing: I am done for, I am done for! Slow down a bit my horses, slow down, please! Don't you listen to my stinging thong! But the horses -- just my luck! -- are so hard to please! Neither lived I so long, nor will I finish this song... I will let horses drink, I'll complete this refrain, Just a little bit more I will stay on the brink... I will vanish from the Earth, swept by a storm like fluffy feather; At a gallop, in the morning by the snow they'll drag me over Can't you please prolong my journey to the end of my tether? Can't you ease your dash, my horses, carry on a little slower? Slow down a bit my horses, slow down, please! Don't take orders from my whip and thong! But the horses -- just my luck! -- are so hard to please! Neither lived I so long, nor will I finish this song... I will let horses drink, I'll complete this refrain, Just a little bit more I will stay on the brink... Just on time - one can't be late arriving at God's quarters! Why do the angels over there sound like some nasty mortals? Or, perhaps, it's just a sleigh-bell that's gone mad and burst out sobbing, Or it's me shouting at my steeds to slow down my sled from dashing. Slow down a bit my horses, slow down, please! I am begging you ...

Vladimir Vysotsky - Giraffe | "Про Жирафа"

George Tokarev. Translation, 2001 Edited by Robert Titterton Once in Chad or Cameroon Where the sun is scorching, Painting grass and rocks maroon - There happened a misfortune. Said old Lion: "Flood I smell, For the best let's hope!" All because Giraffe once fell In love with Antelope! Beasts began to neigh and bray, But smart Parrot, old and gray, Stated wisely from his nest: "Giraffe is big! He knows best!" "Horns of hers deserve no scorn!" - That Giraffe would shout. "Equal we are now born, Fathers' norms are out! If my herd speak ill of her, Snub her for no reason - Then I'll leave this foul herd, And don't call it treason!" Beasts began to neigh and bray, But smart Parrot, old and gray, Stated wisely from his nest: "Giraffe is big! He knows best!" Antelope's Dad resents His prospective sonny: "What his muzzle represents Is comical and funny! No assent will he receive From me, a spotted dope!" Thus, to zebras went to live Giraffe with Antelope! Beasts began to neigh and bray, But smart Parrot, old and gray, Stated wisely from his nest: "Giraffe is big! He knows best!" Now in Cameroon or Chad There's no quiet, nope! Crying hard, they feel so sad, Giraffe with Antelope. But there's nothing they can do, Laws are now surprising - Their daughter shocked them too, Having wed a bison! Yes, Giraffe was wrong enough, Yet we shouldn't blame Giraffe, But that one, stating from his nest: "Giraffe is big! He knows best!"

Vladimir Vysotsky - My Friend Went To Magadan | "Мой друг уехал в Магадан"

Song by Vladimir Vysotsky. English translation by Margaret & Stas Porokhnya. Original title "Moy drug uekhal v Magadan". My friend has moved to Magadan; Play him a fanfare, play him a fanfare. He went himself, his own free man; He wasn't sent there, he wasn't sent there. It wasn't that his luck turned bad Or done to make somebody mad; It wasn't part of some big act: He simply packed, he simply packed. If someone asked him: "What's it for? Why just abandon your life at random? The jails have killers by the score - That's where they crammed "em, that's where they crammed' em!" He'd shrug - "Whatever people say There's more in Moscow anyway" - Then pack up everything he can For Magadan, for Magadan. I wouldn't say my race is run: I'd jump the night train like in the old days; But I won't go to Magadan Leaving my old ways, starting a new phase. I'll sing, my guitar on my knee, Of all the things he's going to see Of all that's left unseen, undone, Of Magadan, of Magadan. My friend had nothing left to lose; It's his decision, it's his decision; He won't be beaten by the screws - He's not in prison, he's not in prison. But God has made for me a plan... Or should I go to Magadan? And like my friend just go to ground And make no sound.

Vladimir Vysotsky - Archaeology Student | "Песня студентов археологов"

Song by Vladimir Vysotsky. English translation by Alex Sokolov. Original title "Песня студентов археологов" - 'Pesnya studentov arheologov'. Since childhood Fedya was a ground digger He brought home crushed stones and granite Once he brought home such a something That Mom and Dad sobbed violently As a student, Fedya was disposed very much To laud archaeology to the skies He brought to the university such things That everybody around sobbed violently Once from an expedition He brought two rusty thingies And said, this is an ancient treasure Another time in Elista He found a set of false teeth As big as a home distillery His degree work was about ancient relics About Scythians, about pagan gods He used so many swearwords in Latin That those Scythians blushed in their tombs He looked for ancient buildings In a wild frenzy And often cried out loud That it is not impossible To meet a pithecanthropus And banged his breast He decided to end unmarried life And struggled hard to make a family He said, I will find such a wife That all of you will sob violently He searched in every corner In Europe in Asia And soon he dug up his ideal But the ideal appeared to be An ignoramus in archaeology And Fedya buried it again.

Vladimir Vysotsky - Tightrope Walker | "Канатоходец"

Vladimir Vysotsky song. English translation by Boris Gendelev. He was not born with stature or status Not for glory, not for hire With his own unusual verve Through his life he walked high above us On a wire, on a wire Stretched out like a nerve Look, he walks in plain sight, with no safety at all! Just a tilt to the right - he will die in a fall To the left should he slide - do not bother to pray But calm down! He just needs to stay For four quarters of the way And the spotlights were breaking his tempo And like laurels needled along The tuba was waking the dead He was deafened by the shouts "bravo" And the gong, and the gong Like a thunderbolt in his head! Look, he walks in plain sight, with no safety at all! Just a tilt to the right - he will die in a fall To the left should he slide - do not bother to pray But calm down! He just needs to stay For mere three quarters of the way Ah, how scary, how charming, how daring Just three minutes to resolution! At this battle with death gaping wide From the stands they were dismally staring - Lilliputians, Lilliputians They appear to him from the height Look, he walks in plain sight, with no safety at all! Just a tilt to the right - he will die in a fall To the left should he slide - do not bother to pray But don't panic! He just needs to stay For another two quarters of the way He laughed at the fleeting renown But aimed to be always the first That sort is as tough as they come! Tough as nails, right over the crowd On the nerves ...

This scene has the really ideological message. His dance is calling for the freedom!!! This film still is taking the very special place in my heart. Excellent dance on the masterly level and amazing Baryshnikov, it's a plenty of artistic impressions. I'm coming back to this film with a great pleasure. The Robin Hood song by V.Vysotsky

The ballad about the Robin Hood by Vladimir Vysotsky. The picture is from the title screen of the Super Robin Hood game (Quattro Adventure compilation)(1993) by Codemasters and Camerica for NES.The translation of the lyrics from here: www.youtube.com " The Song of Free Archers If someone is now out To get your mischievous head, Whether you are scared or proud, If you're caught, you'd be hanged! There is no better shelter Come to us, and never mind, If for worse or if for better, We are to each other kind! If you are, as mouse, poor, Don't want to serve for bread, If you owe each one and sure- Nothing's yours except of head, If you hear us than faster Come to our Happy Wood, Because here our master Is great guy, Sir Robin Hood! Understand without words you, We love jokes, and good wine. We keep old friends, and make new, If you don't come with lies! If you're knight, or not noble, Doesn't matter, be just smart! This one's most often broke, Who has honest head and heart! If your face was often slapped, And there're scares on your back, Among us you are free archer, And would trace only deer's track! Even if you've lost what must have, And are mad on life for good, Come to us, as our master Is great knight, Sir Robin Hood! Here our hearts knock faster, Although we are 'outlaws', We are here all free archers, No taxes or cursed work! Often blankets are sky with stars, And soft bed for us - green moss, But we are alive, and that's why- Don't suffer from remorse! Sometimes one ...

Vladimir Vysotsky - A Spellbound World | "Лирическая"

Song by Vladimir Vysotsky. English translation by George Tokarev. Edited by Robert Titterton. Original title "Liricheskaya". Here firs their paws, softly trembling, protrude, Here birds whistle calmly and lightly... You live in a spellbound magical wood, From which an escape is unlikely. Cherries dry in the wind, which is heartless and rude, In this wind blooming lilac is chilling... All the same I will take you away from this wood To a palace where reedpipes are trilling! Some wizard one day on your world put a spell, It's locked and I can't get in there; And you are convinced that this world's nice and swell, You think, it's without compare! On the grass in the morning there is no dew, Skies are dizzy with clouds in motion... All the same I will come and I will carry you To a mansion that faces the ocean! And when comes the day, when the hour comes You'll leave that abode of a fairy, And I'll take you quickly away in my arms To where no porters can carry! I'll steal you - sometimes stealing isn't too bad! I can't wait any longer in tension! Are you ready for Eden with me in a shed? Someone's captured both palace and mansion!

Лирическая (Марине) Vladimir Vysotsky
