2011 Audi A8L W12
This here is the long wheelbase version of the all-new, fourth-generation Audi A8 that will debut at the this month's Beijing Motor Show in China with a new 6.3-liter W12 engine. Ingolstadt's flagship limo has an overall length of 5267 millimeters (17.28 ft), meaning it's 130 mm (0.43 ft) longer than the regular version. The wheelbase has grown by the same amount, to 3122 mm (10.24 ft) while the height has increased by 2 mm (0.08 in) to 1462 mm (4.8 ft). Width remains unchanged at 1949 mm (6.39 ft). All that extra length benefits rear-seat passengers who also get longer rear doors to further ease access. For those that want the royal treatment, the German firm offers the option of two separate and power-adjustable seats that can be heated, ventilated and adjusted in a variety of ways including forward and back, seat cushion depth and seat back angle with top section adjustable separately. Between the individual rear seats that are standard equipment in the A8 L W12 quattro, there's a full-length console that extends back from the center tunnel to the rear shelf, and can be specified with several goodies such as a folding table or a refrigerator. Rear passengers also get separate controls for the air conditioning that is controlled by 25 adjusting motors, while Audi also offers an entertainment system with two 10.2-inch screens. ⒷⒺⓈⓉⓃⒺⓉⓌⓄⓇⓀ① 2011 Audi A9 could make it to market by 2014 as both a flagship 2-door coupe and cabriolet The A9 images published here are from an independent design study by Spanish designer Dani Garcia.] German car magazine Auto Bild is reporting more details on the development at Audi of an A9 flagship coupe. According to the report, the A9 will be a 2-door coupe based on the A8 and featuring a "modern design." It will be over 5 meters long and be furnished with a highly-refined interior. It will make it to market by 2014 and will also have a cabriolet variant. Starting prices will be around €80000. Earlier this year, we reported on a plan Audi had for an A9 that would share a platform with a production Lamborghini Estoque (as both are VW Group brands.) But that report pegged the A9 as a four-door coupe competing against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Porsche Panamera. Whatever body-style Audi ultimately opts for, the A9 would likely come with an aluminum space-frame (like the A8) and source its main components from the MLB architecture (Modularen Längsbaukasten, or 'modular longitudinal architecture' in English). With the A8 it would also probably share the air-sprung chassis architecture and the assembly line at Audi's Neckarsulm plant. But an A9 may come with a new engine being developed by Audi - a 4.0 liter V8 - as well as borrow the V6 and V8's of the A8 range. VW Group's 6.3 liter W12 engine could also be an option.

When estate agents take photographs of a house they're selling, they almost always get the vendor to move his car out of shot. Thumb through the advertisements at the front of Country Life and it's as though you've moved back 200 years. The houses have wisteria and sunshine but the drives are empty, and that's a pity because the car parked outside tells us so much more than the truncated estate agents' descriptions. You'd go to see a house described as having 6 bdrms, gch, gge, 999-yr lse, 2 pdcks and a lk. But you wouldn't bother if there was a BMW X5 with 20in wheels parked outside. Because then you'd know it had baggy-knicker curtains, lots of chintz, several football-trophy cabinets and that all the taps would be in the shape of swans. Two weeks ago the Home section of this newspaper ran a picture of Jim Davidson's agreeable house in Surrey. You could tell it was Jim Davidson's house because parked right outside the front door was a royal blue Bentley Arnage. In some ways, having a Bentley Arnage in the picture is a good thing. It shows the vendor is not worried about looking after the pennies. Which means the lead on the roof will have been applied with a ladle, and that the sash windows won't rattle. The colour, though — that was the giveaway at Jim's gaff. Green or fawn would have been fine, but blue suggests the owner has little sense of tradition, which in turn means lots of zebra-skin rugs, mingling with endless maroon drapes.
