WARDA est née en juillet 1940 en région parisienne d'un père algérien et d'une mère libanaise. Son père était gérant d'un foyer d'ouvriers à Boulogne Billancourt qui sera, dès 1936, un centre d'activités d'organisation nationaliste de lutte pour l'indépendance du Maghreb. Plus tard, il deviendra propriétaire d'un cabaret de musique arabe installé dans le Quartier Latin de Paris, dont Warda sera la vedette jusqu'à sa fermeture en 1958, date de l'exil de toute la famille au Liban. Sa mère, issue d'une grande famille musulmane de Beyrouth, a initié sa fille dès son plus jeune âge à la chanson libanaise... Le public découvre Warda grâce à une émission TV pour enfants diffusée par la RTF en 1951, alors qu'elle a seulement 11 ans. Chaque jeudi, elle assure la présentation de cette émission et chante une chanson devant son jeune auditoire. En 1958, alors que la France est préoccupée par la guerre d'indépendance algérienne, la famille de Warda se réfugie à Beyrouth (Liban), où Warda continuera à interpréter des chansons militantes, en particulier "Djamila" dédiée à la résistance des femmes. Quand Warda commence à chanter dans Tanyos, une boîte de nuit célèbre, elle n'a que 17 ans et ses chansons nationalistes ne sont pas adaptées ! Warda Al-Jazairia (Arabic: وردة الجزائرية‎), commonly referred to as just Warda (Arabic: وردة‎) (b. July 1939), is a French-born Algerian singer. She is well known in the Arabic music community for her Egyptian songs and music. Warda was born in Puteaux, France to a Lebanese Mother and Algerian father. She started singing at the age of eleven in 1951. She quickly became well known for her singing of patriotic Algerian songs. When she married in 1962, however, her husband forbade her to sing. In 1972, Algerian president Houari Boumédienne asked her to sing to commemorate Algeria's independence, and she performed with an Egyptian orchestra. As a result her marriage broke up, and she dedicated her life to music. She then moved to Egypt, where she married the composer Baligh Hamdi. She performed many of his songs and those of other Arabic composers, quickly rising to fame and releasing several albums per year. Additionally, she has starred in a few films. Warda is a female name of Arabic origin meaning Rose. At the height of Panarabism, Gamal Abdel Nasser requested that Warda be given a part in a production of Mohammad Abdelwahhab entitled My Great Homeland (Watani Al-Akbar). The song was performed by the biggest stars at the time including Abdel Halim Hafez, Shadia, Sabah (singer), Najat Al-Saghira and Faida Kamel. The song denounced Colonialism and urged for a united Arab People to defeat foreign occupation (see Partitioning of the Ottoman Empire).

From the 1963 film Almaz Abdo El Hamouli a biographical movie about the lives of two famous Egyptian singers from the late 1800's who were married to each other. Warda plays the part of Almaz, a poor woman with a prodigious voice who was discovered by the then famous singer Abdo El Hamouli (played by singer Adel Mamoun) who eventually married her to save her from the unwanted advances of Egypt's then governor under the Ottoman Empire. This scene is a wedding. Warda's character has been hired to sing there. The man in the white galabeya sitting in the audience is actor Shokry Sarhan and in the blue galabeya and red cap is actor Fouad el Mohandes. Ragaa Youssef is the dancer. Ragaa Youssef began her career in the Akef circus as an acrobat and appeared in about 25 films. Her sister Awatef Youssef was a circus acrobat and dancer as well and they often danced as a duo. Awatef retired early and Ragaa Youssef went on to produce and act in several films. She married director Ahmed el Nahas. Ragaa Youssef died in 1992
