The 20-year-old French woman, who retained her 400-meter freestyle world title on Sunday and took the silver in Tuesday's 100 backstroke, won a pulsating 200 freestyle final. European silver medalist Annika Lurz from Germany, the fastest woman in the world last year, turned first at the 50-meter mark but Manaudou overtook her on the second length and maintained a slender advantage as they duelled for superiority through the second 100. Western Australia's Lauren Mitchell has cemented herself as one of Australia's best ever gymnasts over the past two years. Following on from two silver medals at the 2009 World Championships, Mitchell added a record equalling four Gymnastics gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and won the floor gold medal at the World Championships in Rotterdam. Australia's Alice McNamara climbed 1576 stairs to win the 2011 Empire State Run-Up Race in New York. After winning Melbourne's Eureka Tower version, the 24 year-old Victorian proudly represented Australia. A gold medalist member of Australia's Rowing Team, McNamara completed the race in a time of 13:03.

Pellegrini Breaks World Record in 200-meter Semifinal


Federica Pellegrini, silver medallist at the 2004 Olympics and 2005 worlds, produced a compelling turn of finishing speed to win the second women's 200 meters freestyle semifinal in 1:56.47. Oussama Mellouli pulled off a surprise win in the men's 800-meter freestyle final on Wednesday to become Tunisia's first world swimming champion. Michael Phelps broke his third world record in as many days to collect his fourth gold medal at the world swimming championships on Thursday.
