Patrick Watson at WNYC for NPR Music

The Montreal-based musician performs "Beijing," "Big Bird In A Small World" and "Wooden Arms" at the WNYC studios in New York City. Watson's stunning, romantic voice soars above the guitars and highly orchestrated melodies amid a driving pulse of precise piano work. Meanwhile, Kuster's clattering percussion is crisply performed on snare drums, marimbas and household pots turned upside-down. It's an inspired sound from a great young artist. WNYC-TV - Video Music Box opening - 1989

This is the classic opening sequence of the groundbreaking program "Video Music Box", which began in 1983 on WNYC-TV (the old channel 31, now called WPXN-TV) in New York City. "VMB" ran on channel 31 until 1996, when when the program moved to WNYE-TV (channel 25) after WNYC-TV was sold by the City of New York. This opening was recorded off-air from WNYC-TV in 1989. This clip starts off with a promo for the British comedy "Shelley", one of many such programs aired on channel 31 at the time. After the station identification, Ralph McDaniels welcomes us to "New York's number one video show". The classic opening montage, which is soundtracked by the instrumental version of Whodini's "Five Minutes of Funk", features the following clips: -- Breakdancers -- "You Talk Too Much", Run DMC -- "Stick 'Em", The Fat Boys -- LL Cool J -- "Sun City" with Bruce Springsteen and former Temptations David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks -- "Kiss", Prince and the Revolution -- "Once in a Lifetime", Talking Heads -- "And She Was", Talking Heads -- "Dress You Up", Madonna -- "Take on Me", A-ha -- Jimi Hendrix -- James Brown performing on "American Bandstand" -- Bob Marley -- "Who Do You Love", Bernard Wright -- breakdancing clip from "Beat Street" Yes, most of us remember "Video Music Box" as a Hip-Hop and R&B show, but the opening recalls its early eclectic format and the overall black music origins of Hip-Hop. Thanks to "pachwi25" for naming everyone in the montage.

WNYC Radio Rookies Neighborhood to Neighborhood Project: Mind the Gap in Crown Heights

Four teenage girls, all new immigrants from the Caribbean, arrive at a high school in the heart of what was the epicenter of the Crown Heights riots 20 years ago. As newcomers they know nothing of the long history of tension between the Black and Lubavitch Jewish communities in the neighborhood. They set out to try to educate themselves about a culture so different from their own, in the midst of stereotypes and misinformation about Jewish people. Editor's Note on video: The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center works to improve inter-group relations in Crown Heights by creating a safe space where people of different backgrounds are encouraged to discuss hard conversations, through activities and workshops. For example, the scene in the video where Amy Ellenbogen, the Center's Director, poses a statement about co-existence in the neighborhood is a part of a game, "The Human Barometer", where participants move to different parts of the room to show if they agree, disagree or feel neutral about the issue. WNYC - Asperger's Syndrome: my life growing up and now (first show) part 1

My name is Emanuel Frowner and I did not know I had Asperger's Syndorme until I was 25. I went to the Seaver and New York Autism Center for Excellence at Mount Sinai in early 2006. I did the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and my mom did the Autism Diagnostic Interview. My IQ was at least 100. Based on this, I met the Criteria for Asperger's Syndrome. I was a bit surprised at first, but then I thought of it as a blessing in disguise. I have read many books on AS and it made me analyze many aspects of my life. A lot of it was like me (not everything). I have had difficulties mainly because of the lack of understanding from the general public and even "educated" people, never mind people who were down right ignorant. But I have stayed strong and overcame many things so far. It has definitely made me a better person. I joined Adaptations, which is a support group for adults in their 20s and 30s. I have made a few friends and we have done a lot of things together such as going to Knicks games and movies. A reporter, from WNYC, Gregory Warner found out about me through Dr. Evdokia Anagnostou and others from the Seaver Center in early 2006. I have done many interviews with him. Some of my family members have been interviewed by him. I have been interviewed by Gregory Warner on the following dates: Gregory interviewed me on Mon. Dec. 11, 2006. Gregory interviewed Blair, my brother, and me on Sat. Sept. 15, 2007. Gregory interviewed Dr. Anagnostou and me on Mon. Oct. 8 ...

WNYC Cityscapes: Photographer Gail Albert Halaban

Gail Albert Halaban's body of work Out My Window is a great example of a local artist with a unique perspective on our cityscape. For this project, she went into apartments of friends and strangers across the city and took photographs out their windows. In the lives of neighbors, Halaban found stories about the private, daily duties NYers share - hugging our dogs, preparing a dinner party, looking in the fridge. She told me that this project could only have happened in NYC.

WNYC Radiolab Podcast: Voices In Your Head

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THIS! Jad talks to Charles Fernyhough about the connection between thought, inner speech, and the voice in our heads. In our last episode, Words, we got into a debate about whether kids can think before they have words. For this podcast, Jad revisits that question with Charles Fernyhough, who tells Jad about a theory developed by a Russian psychologist name Lev Vygotsky. Vygotsky's theory describes how words and thoughts move from speech outside our heads to speech inside our heads. We also talk to someone who hears other people's voices in his head, and ask Fernyhough about whether Vygotsky's ideas could shed light on this surprisingly common phenomena. If you want to read more about voice-hearing and schizophrenia, check out the study that Fernyhough mentioned in this podcast.
