WWD: Oscar de la Renta RTW Spring 2012

The wildly frizzed hair that flew back as the models walked suggested Seventies; the three billowing ballgowns under lace tops that opened the show, Eighties (the good part). But 60-some exits later, a fair conclusion was that Oscar de la Renta's finest hour might be right now. For the full review and images: bit.ly
WWD: Alexander Wang RTW Spring 2010

The fashion formula at Alexander Wang has always been to subvert the classic, first knits and, now, sportswear. And put the emphasis on the sports — football, to be exact — as Wang tackled that theme enthusiastically. For full review: bit.ly WWD Facebook | Fashion Week: bit.ly

Among the many references that worked their way into Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayocks spring collection for Vena Cava were tribal, by way of beading and a mask print; sexy noir via fishnet underpinning, and an overt ode to punk through safety pin details and splatter-paint motifs. Prabal Gurung: In his sophomore season, Prabal Gurung continued his fine way with lady-fied clothes, challenging himself to show how a woman can dress up without turning frivolous. LAMB: Gwen Stefanis return to New York Fashion Week came with a new licensing partner, Manhattan Trade Inc., and a more relaxed attitude. Bensoni: After last seasons jaunt to the City of Light, Benjamin Channing Clyburn and Sonia Yoon brought things back home, and that Bensoni chic polish and savoir faire has been kicked up a patriotic notch or two. WWD: Michael Kors, RTW Fall 2009

WWD Review: A series of black looks that opened the show — wool satin trenchcoat, jersey sheath, sweater and bubble skirt. These gave way to herringbones, tony tweeds — an organza suit and a curvy, big-collared Donegal coat looked fab.

WWD: Isabel Marant RTW Fall 2012

Her fall collection boiled down to rewiring her signature motifs for a new theme. This time it was late 19th-century cowgirls, the pioneering type, who were feminine but built tough — a great fit for Marant's look. "I love the way they were wearing very masculine trousers to ride horses with lace shirts," she said before the show. The lineup was stocked with strong items. There were loads of pretty lace on tight crew necks, pretty blouses with matching skirts and sexy leather dresses with laser-cut lace patterns around the collars. Her signature cropped skinny jean came in leather with tassel details, pink denim with floral embroideries up the legs and velvet with contrast piping. Western shirts — pick your flavor. Variations of the retro American style included blouses that buttoned down the back, boyish shirts that buttoned up the front, a baseball jacket and a shirtdress belted low on the waist. John Galliano devoted his Dior spring show to Lauren Bacall, and her trench-wearing other half, Humphrey Bogart. WWD: Prabal Gurung RTW Fall 2012

An enigmatic title such as "Uncursed," which Prabal Gurung chose for his fall collection, begs for demystification. Backstage before the show, he said he found inspiration in the blue rose, which does not occur in nature but was engineered in Japan in 2004. "For me, the rose is so blasé because of its popularity," said Gurung, for whom the blue genus has reversed the curse of banality. There's more: The idea of creating something totally new set Gurung on a soul search. "We all have the dark and the light side, but for the longest time I've only put my happy self out there," he said. "Finally, professionally, mentally and spiritually, I'm in a place where I'm willing to deal with the dark side of me." For the full collection: bit.ly

Sarah Burton focused primarily on a single silhouette: small bodice, tiny waist, tight skirt flounced or godeted at the hem for flirtatious walkability. A Sunday-night preview flaunted major fashion — girls awaiting fittings in enormous furry hats, Pilgrim by way of Dr. Seuss (and Stephen Jones), atop elaborate pilings of impeccably sculpted clothes in incredible custom fabrics and tricked-out (holograms, sparkly buckles) shoes. What the preview didn't telegraph: the intense emotion and lyricism of the show Marc Jacobs would present in little more than 24 hours. For the full collection: bit.ly

Her look focused on intricate bodice construction and layerings of airy fabrics — opaque, transparent, piqued, otherwise perforated — cut and crafted with incredible attention to detail. Throughout, Wang deftly crossed references from the worlds of couture and sports alike. There were also twinges — unintentional, but odd — of Nina Ricci by Olivier Theyskens, who, in six-degrees mode, worked at Ricci with Mario Grauso, now president of Vera Wang. These came in manipulated 18th-century wallpaper prints that Wang called "trippy," and in the diaphanous cutaway-skirt motif. For the full review and images: bit.ly

Fashion serves many purposes, one being a nonnarcotic mood-elevator. Arriving for Chanel at what could at this point be called Karl Lagerfeld's Grand Palais, one experienced individual and communal glee to the point of giddiness. It happened the moment you took in Lagerfeld's under-the-sea-scape, a wondrous, stylized environment enclosed in undulating walls and populated by giant sculptural sea life. Stingray, sea horse, shark, anemone, coral branches — all were curvaceous and in various white finishes, matte, glossy, sparkly. The effect was part Disney, part Cocteau, all magical. Stefano Pilati showed his sign-off collection for Yves Saint Laurent Monday night. Unlike the season's first designer casualty, Raf Simons, Pilati had worked under the rumor of possible dismissal almost from the day he assumed the role of creative director seven years ago. It's not clear when he learned this would be his swan song; he maintained that fact did not determine the design process. "It's not a collection for celebration [of the YSL tenure]," Pilati said backstage before his show. "It's just a phase of my creation." For the full review: bit.ly

The clothes were stellar, from the obviously chic — the supple leather coats with fringed touches, the boxy jackets in hip-length and cropped versions, the cashmere sweaters and tony sweatshirts — to some joyfully risky business. Jacobs is on a synthetics kick, which he realized both subtly (poly-gingham) and in your face: dresses and skirts made from silicone, silk woven with Christmas-tree tinsel, even cellophane, its rumpled transparency revealing layers of modest silk lingerie. Guests arriving for the show came into a circular space dominated by a wide white cylinder. This was raised to reveal all the pretty little carousel horses, 48 of them, each glistening white and supporting an exquisitely bedecked show pony of the model variety. The girls, each with cool, imperfect prom-night updos secured by single-strand tiaras, looked engagingly gentle even as they flaunted major fashion, challenging fashion, especially from a volume perspective, as proportions ranged from a little loose to really big, whether in shift dresses, party dresses, belled and a-line skirts, and some of the most remarkable coats you'll ever see.
