Wagner - RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES - Furtwangler

The Ride of the Valkyries, by Richard Wagner, in a classic recording with Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic. Illustrations are by Arthur Rackham. "One golden summer in adolescence...I heard the 'Ride of the Valkyries' on a gramophone and saw Arthur Rackham's illustrations to The Ring." (CSLewis) The music: probably the most famous and instantly identifiable of Wagner's works is this short orchestral prelude from Die Walkure, the second opera in the monumental Der Ring des Nibelungen. It has gone on to enter popular culture, being used in many films, most notably the helicopter attack sequence in Apocalypse Now. In terms of composition it perfectly demonstrates Wagner's epic sense of drama, and also his masterful orchestration. The conductor: Wilhelm Furtwangler is probably unrivalled as an interpreter of the core Austro-German Romantic repertoire, setting benchmarks in the performance of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner and others. His recordings include two complete Ring Cycles, both of them classics. The illustrations: Arthur Rackham was one of the greatest illustrators at the turn of the 19th century, creating classic visions for fairy tales and fantasies (Alice, Peter Pan, etc.). His work on Der Ring des Nibelungen is often considered one of the finest visual depictions of Wagner's epic. Sound: sorry the quality isn't first class - the recording is nearly sixty years old! Richard Wagner - Siegfried Idyll

Conductor: Sergiu Celibidache & Münchner Philharmoniker Apart from the operas, Wagner composed a small number of pieces; this stems from his reluctance to conceive music which didn't belong to the sacredness of the drama, fundamental expression of his thought. The "Siegfried Idyll" is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra, composed by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen. Wagner's opera "Siegfried", which was premiered in 1876, incorporates music from the Idyll. It was once thought that the Idyll borrowed musical ideas intended for the opera, but it is now known that the opposite is the case: Wagner adapted melodic material from an unfinished chamber piece in the Idyll and later incorporated it into the love scene between Siegfried and Brunhilde in the opera.

Wagner Siegfried Idyll (1/2); Solti

Wilhelm Richard Wagner Sir Georg Solti Vienna Philharmonic Wagner wrote this tender composition for chamber orchestra as a birthday gift to his second wife, Cosima, who was the daughter of the famous Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. It was composed around the time when he was nearing the completion of the score for his music drama Siegfried—one of the four operas in his operatic cycle The Ring—and after the birth of their first son together, Siegfried. The premier of Siegfried Idyll took place on the staircase of Tribschen—their home in Switzerland—on the morning of Christmas Eve in 1870, which was Cosima's 33rd birthday. Wagner on Cosima, his new son, and his life: "She has borne to me a wonderfully beautiful and vigorous boy, whom I could boldly call `Siegfried'; he is now growing, together with my work, and gives me a new long life which has at last attained a meaning." Cosima on the premier of Siegfried Idyll : "As I awoke, my ear caught a sound, which swelled fuller and fuller; no longer could I imagine myself to be dreaming: music was sounding, and such music! When it died away, Richard came into my room with the children and offered me the score of the symphonic birthday poem. I was in tears, but so were all the rest of the household. Richard had arranged his orchestra on the staircase, and thus was our Tribschen consecrated forever."

Richard Wagner - The ride of the Valkyries from "Die Walküre"

Richard Wagner The ride of the Valkyries, from Die Walküre Richard Wagner is considered the master of German opera, and one of the most progressive composers in history. The philosophical issues that Wagner considered vital to society were the tension between good and evil, between the physical and spiritual, and between selfishness and redemptive love. Wagner is also one to the most controversial composers of our time, his music was breathtaking, his politics left many cold. Der Ring des Nibelungen, (The Ring of the Nibelung), is a cycle of four epic music dramas by the German composer Richard Wagner.

Composer Howard Goodall links great pieces of music to the era in which they were written in a bid to prove that time, place, culture and politics had more of a part to play in the end product than the genius of the producer. He begins with a historical look at 1874, the year which saw the completion of Wagner's influential Ring cycle. As always, should these become commercially available i will remove them immediatly. Rare. Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1962) ------------------------- Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. Part 2 www.youtube.com

Horowitz plays Wagner-Liszt Isolde's Liebestod

Last but not least. It took the legendary pianist three separate days to record this piece to his satisfaction, and he died a mere four days after its completion on November 5, 1989. Horowitz did not record the other Liszt transcriptions of Wagner such as the Tanhauser Overture, though the biography by authored Harold Schonberg noted that he played an enormous amount of his own transcriptions of operatic music, including the Ride of the Valkyrie. However, Horowitz did not programme most of them once he arrived in the United States.

Anna Russell - The (First) Farewell Concert (1984) To end a long, hilarious career, classical music comedienne Anna Russell revived some of her best and funniest routines and took them on the road. This special PBS production, taped in Baltimore at the beginning of that 1984 tour, is a treasure for music lovers who understand that the thing they love can be charmingly goofy. The highlight of the disc, and the routine that most fans remember most fondly, is her discussion of the Ring cycle. She tells the convoluted story of Wagner's four-installment epic, with careful attention to its absurdities, and she sings all the roles in a voice ranging shakily but with determination through soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. She does the same in her parody of a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, and the advantage of a video recording becomes obvious when she changes funny hats while singing to show whether she is acting the heroine, villain, or chorus.

With each Good Friday it grows a year older, and I then celebrate the day of its conception, knowing that its birthday will follow one day. [Letter from Richard Wagner to King Ludwig, 14 April 1865] Barry Millington writes: In his searching essay, "The Sorrows and Grandeur of Richard Wagner", Thomas Mann comes closer than most commentators to describing the sublime, monumental effect of Wagner's music. It is marked by "pessimistic heaviness and measured yearning", he says, and speaks of "forces struggling out of dark confusion to find deliverance in beauty". Nowhere is that sense of a weighty tread allied to unearthly, exalted eloquence more evident than in the composer's last, most masterly score, Parsifal (1877-82).. Parsifal, after many years of wandering, appears with the spear that will heal Amfortas's wound.
