Enjoy!Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire.

"Waves of the Danube" (Romanian: Valurile Dunării; German: Donauwellen; French: Flots du Danube; Russian: Дунайские Волны) is a waltz composed by Iosif Ivanovici (1845--1902) in 1880, and is one of the most famous Romanian tunes in the world. In the United States, it is frequently referred to as "The Anniversary Song", a title given by Al Jolson when he and Saul Chaplin released an adaptation of the song in 1946. "Waves of the Danube" was first published in Bucharest, 1880. It was dedicated to Emma Gebauer, the wife of music publisher Constantin Gebauer.

Strauss dedicated this 'Kiss' Waltz to his new wife, the Prussian actress Angelika Dittrich aged just 28. Although the marriage was a failure, his compositional talent wasn't and continued unabated and with his operetta 'Der lustige krieg' of 1881 it provided Strauss with 10 arrangements and this is among the finest. It is taken from the operetta's 'hit' number 'Nur fur Natur' and part of the Act 2 Finale. The work was first perfomed by Eduard Strauss and the orchestra at a Court Ball on 10th January 1882.
