Charlie Chan on Broadway - Warner Oland - Keye Luke

The Ace Detective and his number one Son Lee, detective in training, find themselves in New York City to attend a police testimonial in Chan's honor, The famed Honolulu detective sleuth runs head long into another murder! The victim is a blackmailing nightclub singer who had listed the names of all known criminals in Manhattan in her diary. The diary disappears, and Charlie joins a glib newspaper reporter (Donald Woods) and a photojournalist (Joan Marsh) in hunting down the killer. Several false leads and red herrings later, Charlie puts the pieces together and fingers the killer--who true to form is the least likely suspect (especially for a "typical" New York murder case). Charlie Chan ~The Black Camel, Warner Oland ~ Bela Lugosi

The Black Camel (1931) The earliest surviving of the Charlie Chan films (there were two silents and two other talkies between 1926 and 1931, which have since been lost to studio fires) stars Warner Oland as the inscrutable sleuth, who investigates the murder of a young actress in Honolulu and finds there's a connection with an unsolved murder from a few years before and an enigmatic psychic, Tarneverro (Bela Lugosi), who may know more than he's letting on. Shelah Fane, a motion picture star who is filming in Honolulu, consults the mystic Tarneverro, her spiritual advisor, to decide if she should marry Alan Jaynes, a wealthy globetrotter whom she met on the ship to Hawaii. During a crystal ball session, Shelah confesses to Tarneverro that three years earlier she fell in love with her co-star, Denny Mayo, and that she was in his house on the night he was murdered. Agitated following her consultation, Shelah tells Julie O'Neill, her protégé, that she cannot marry Alan. Anna, Shelah Fane's maid, is greatly upset when, as she brings Shelah an orchid corsage from stage actor Robert Fyfe, who is currently appearing in town, she sees Shelah tearing up a photograph of Denny Mayo. That evening, just before a dinner party that Shelah Fane is giving, Julie, along with Jimmy Bradshaw, a tourist bureau employee who wants to marry Julie, find Shelah stabbed to death in her pavilion. Without explaining why, Julie has Jimmy remove Shelah's emerald ring. During his investigation, Inspector ...

"Charlie Chan at The Opera" Warner Oland - Boris Karloff - Keye Luke

Ace Chinese detective Chan is back on the case and this one is regarded by most as one of the best in the entire Detective Chan series. The opera star Gravelle suffers amnesia. He is a recent escapee from an insane asylum, accused of murdering fellow performers (his wife and her lover). Included in the movie is the opera "Carnival", composed for the picture by Oscar Levant. Generally, when a horror star appears in a mystery movie they turns out to be an obvious red herring. I'm not going to say whether Karloff is one or not but will say that the movie does take the care not to make him an obvious one and in fact, the movie seems to take quite a bit of care all around; it looks like a lot of work went into the opera sequences, and the characters are a little more fleshed out than they usually are. Karloff's definitely is, and his presence is definitely a highlight of the movie, as are Warner Oland's (in the title role, of course) and William Demarest's, who makes several appearances as a police detective. The presence of Karloff definitely inspired a bit of the horror touches at the beginning of the movie, and there is an honourary reference to FRANKENSTEIN that seems to que into nearly every Karloff event or film he made during this time period. Also there's a quite amusing bit where the City Det.(William Demarest) tries to pick out Chan's son Lee (Keye Luke) from among a number of Asian knights in shining armor just off stage. A++++!

Charlie Chan in Egypt - Warner Oland & Rita Hayworth

"Waiting for tomorrow, waste of today." Charlie Chan's international travels take him to an archeological dig in Egypt in this episode. During the unearthing of an ancient pyramid, an archeologist disappears, eventually turning up dead. The mystery in this one is particularly good, although the identity of the killer seems slightly arbitrary. The sinister plot is complex and full of exciting twists. Rita Hayworth in an early role for her is the guest star of note in this Chan entry; she's billed as Rita Cansino.

Charle Chan in Paris - Keye Luke's 1st appearence as Lee.

This Charlie Chan in Paris series entry is distinguished by the presence of the young actor Keye Luke making his first appearance as Charlie Chan's (Warner Oland) Number One Son Lee Chan. When Ace Detective Chan is urgently summoned to Paris by undercover agent Nardi (Dorothy Appleby), Detective Chan hopes to solve the case of an international counterfeiting ring. sadly Nardi is murdered, but not before she can leaving behind a clue with her dying last words. With the eager but still not quite-expert assistance of son Lee, Charlie puts the pieces together and exposes the identity of the head counterfeiter. This film was long believed lost, Charlie Chan in Paris was restored and released to video in the early 1980s, providing a ray of hope that such earlier "Chan" installments as Charlie Chan Carries On and Charlie Chan's Courage may also resurface as well. MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE 1938 PETER LORRE TRAILER

Theatrical trailer for the third "Mr. Moto" entry starring Peter Lorre, MR. MOTO'S GAAMBLE. This film actually began as CHARLIE CHAN AT RINGSIDE, but when then-Chan Warner Oland (birth name John Verner Olund) suffered a mental breakdown with acute dementia, Fox rewrote the script and included both Key Luke -- as Jimmy Chan -- and Harold Huber -- as Police Lieutenant Riggs -- from the series. Fox then replaced Swedish-born Oland, with Sidney as Chan Chan (ironically, who was also born in Sweden) and resumed the popular Charlie Chan series with CHARLIE CHAN IN HONOLULU (1938). Oland died of bronchial pneumonia in his native Sweden on August 6, 1938 five months after the release of MR. MOTO'S GAMBLE. Charlie Chan Filmausschnitte deutsch

Charlie Chan. Fernsehen.
