They forged, welded, wound, assembled everything on site. Work days were long and hard, safety was something you had to depend on luck and good sense for, and tools were primitive. This film is a compilation of a series of fascinating strips taken from the Library of Congress's American Memory Collection. American Mutoscope and Biograph did the filming, and after all those Edison reels, you might wonder why not them? Westinghouse and Edison were not friends at all. You can see why as the girls wind coils for the Alternating Current Westinghouse adopted from Tesla instead of Edison's pet Direct Current. As accompaniment, 'Night Dance', neo classical or steam punk? These are the Westinghouse Traction Elevators, modernized by Schindler, with the unpredicably unreliable Miconic 10 Controller (Mi-"Chronic" 10 is more accurate). at the Marriott Marquis, Times Square, New York, New York. Since there's plenty of people that are NOT Elevator Enthusiasts who watch this channel, a thorough description of the system, and how it works (or suposed to, in this case), is presented. We ride the 3 types of elevators here, the Hotel Glassbacks, the "Innie" (Interior), and one slower lift that serves "The View", a rotating restaurant on the top 2 levels. (The low-rise lifts are pointless, so they were skipped.) As many say, the flawed elevators behave well when being recorded, but not in this case. It enters "Phantom" calls, ignores requests, and frequently failed. In some cases not shown on video, I took the escalators, because it refused my calls to 8, and to get to my room, I was going to hitch a ride on a lift that came closest to my floor (30), and take the MPE to get there. Let's not forget the occasional 10 to 30 second wait between stops, after the doors close. On top of that, only the low-rise side would accept my high-rise calls half the time. Way to go, Schindler. ...and now you know why I call these the Mi-"Chronic" 10.

This is my Westinghouse OV-25 400watt mercury vapor streetlight. This light came from an electrical utility manager in a small city near my parents home. My dad introduced me to him while he was designing a railroad spur in their community. The electrical utility manager showed me their fine collection of vintage lighting equipment. Then he let me pick some items out to have for my own, he gave me other items too, and explained what they were. The manager and me visited for over have an hour talking about lighting equipment. We will hopefully be seeing each other often. Anyway, this streetlight does not have a photocell socket so it does not have a photocell. This is 400watt mercury vapor and is 120volt. I finally managed to get to NY's elevator amusement park - the Marriott Marquis. This place is amazing. Schindler 7000's traveling over 1000FPM in a 45 floor atrium. Truly spectacular. IMO this is even better than the Atlanta Marquis, considering how here all the elevators are built into one central cylindrical "core." The cabs too were very futuristic looking (from the outside) and nice and quiet inside. This was also my first experience with a predestined elevator system (well that's what I call it) Miconic 10 behaved well when I was there in the mid-afternoon, but after reading up on some hotel reviews on this place on TripAdvisor I wouldn't be so quick to praise it. At peak hours wait times quickly inflated to over 10 minutes. This is an elevator system, not the subway! Granted, many of the scathing reviews I read were from when the system was being implemented (when Schindler as ripping out the old cabs, controllers, and hall fixtures) but when I returned to the hotel later around 6:00 the elevator banks were considerably crowded. I'll have to come back here again before I pass my final judgment. The ride the elevators offered, however, was fantastic. Going up you're actually pushed into the floor as the gearless Westinghouse motor reaches full speed. Going down you actually get a floating sensation, as if gravity were suddenly reduced. They must have some really powerful motors in this system - just listen to the background noise when I'm on the 45th floor. Overall <b>...</b>
