Dan Wheldon died today, October 16, 2011, after this hard wreck at Las Vegas Motorspeedway. They ended the race after a 2-hour red flag and held a 5 lap tribute after the announcement in honor of him. He won the 2011 Indy 500 just 5 months before this day. JR Hilderand (Diziness), Pippa Mann (Hand), and Will Power (Back) also received minor injuries after this wreck and were taken to the hospital. Will Power was released with no major injury later that night. Hildebrand and Mann were admitted over night to recover. Thoughts and prayers are for other friends and family of Dan Wheldon. The corner of Bayshore Drive and Albert Whitted Park -- aka Turn 10 of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg -- is an appropriate spot to pay tribute to Dan Wheldon. Mayor Bill Foster and Susie Wheldon unveiled a street sign at Turn 10, which will be known as Dan Wheldon Way. A few yards away, a permanent memorial honoring Wheldon will be erected this fall. It will contain names of all winners of Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. It was Turn 10 where Wheldon overtook Ryan Briscoe and went on to win the inaugural IZOD IndyCar Series street race on April 3, 2005. Wheldon, the 2005 series champion who moved to St. Petersburg in 2005, died from injuries suffered in a race crash in October. His wife Susie and two young sons still call the community home.

National Guard Panther Racing Driver's Lake Placid Flip, Slide Airs this Weekend INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - (January 29, 2010) -- A frightening bobsled crash involving National Guard Panther Racing driver Dan Wheldon will be featured this Sunday at 5 pm (EST) during SPEED channel's broadcast of the annual Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge. Wheldon, who was attending the event on behalf of the National Guard, was in Lake Placid taking a demonstration ride with NHRA driver Phil Burkhart, when he flipped the bobsled -- sending Wheldon out the back of the sled, where he slid down the remainder of the course at just under 70 mph. "I must say, it was the hardest crash I've ever experienced in my career," Wheldon said. "But at the same time, I have an entirely new respect for the people that are professional bobsledders. It honestly was one of the most painful experiences I've had, but by the same token it was a lot of fun. I was having a great time ... right up until the point (Burkhart) crashed." The National Guard played a key role in the event, as Soldiers worked as brakemen during the race. The race was highlighted by motorsports stars Boris Said, Joey Logano and others. Bodine organized the event in an effort to help raise money for the USA Olympic bobsled team. Wheldon, the 2005 Indianapolis and IZOD IndyCar Series champion, was a great sport during the event -- and bowed to the crowed immediately following the accident.
