Ms Gillard also made an historic address in New Zealand's parliament, hoping to boost ties across the Tasman Sea. Speaking to the press in Wellington on Wednesday, Gillard pledged greater economic unity between Australia and New Zealand. Our Australian correspondent Caden Pearson files this report. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has praised the relationship between Australia and New Zealand, saying the bond is like family. Prime Minister Gillard said she was privileged to be the first leader of a foreign nation to address the New Zealand parliament. During her speech Gillard spoke about the "mateship" and shared defense history between the two countries, and expressed her condolences on the recent death of a New Zealand soldier in Afghanistan. During her visit Gillard signed a new investment protocol which will increase the threshold of investments between the two nations. A trade agreement she said was "envied around the world." Prime Minister Gillard will visit New Zealanders who volunteered after the Queensland floods before returning to Australia on Thursday. This popular tune was written around 1855 by William Steffe. The song itself began as a gospel song called "Canaan's Happy Shore" or "Brothers, Will You Meet Me?" but as the tune became known around the US it was set to many different lyrics. The most popular of these was a song called "John Brown's Body," written by Thomas Bishop, a soldier from Vermont in the Massachusetts Infantry, in about 1860. The original words were apparently not about John Brown, the abolitionist, but referred to a soldier of the same name in the regiment. Julia Ward Howe and her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, were active leaders in anti-slavery politics and strong supporters of the Union. By the time she heard the song during a public review of the troops in Washington, the words had changed to refer to John Brown, the famed abolitionist. The Reverend James Clarke, who was with her at the review, suggested to Howe that she write new words for the song. At her hotel in Washington on the night of November 18, 1861, Howe awoke before sunrise with the words of the song in her mind and wrote out the verses of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" in the darkness before she had a chance to forget them. She retained the original chorus of "John Brown's Body." The song was first published on the front page of "The Atlantic Monthly" in February 1862, except for the sixth verse, which is often left out. John David Carson broke into Hollywood in 1971 with the bizarre coming-of-age comedy "Pretty Maids All in a Row", starring alongside Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson and Telly Savalas. At the beginning of the video we show the back label from the earlier pressing. Played on my 1916 VV-X. The back label reads: "74236—Kathleen Mavourneen Crawford-Crouch Sung by John McCormack Mr. McCormack has given an exquisite rendering of this famous ballad, which has been truly called the queen among Irish songs. Although it has often been stated that the song was not of Irish birth, and though the music was composed by an Englishman, Frederick Nichols Crouch, the beautiful words were written by a true daughter of Ireland, Mrs. Julia Crawford, who was born in County Cavan. The poem first appeared in Captain Maryatt's Metropolitan Magazine about 1835. Crouch saw it there, and being much attracted by the beauty of the verses, at once sought out the authoress and obtained her permission to set them to music. The result was the most widely popular of all Irish ballads, and one which retains a permanent hold on the public favor. About Julia I have been teaching and practicing yoga since 2001, with my beginnings at Neoalpine/YYoga in Whistler, BC, Canada. Between 2005-2008,I had the opportunity to teach at Pure Yoga, Hong Kong with a mind-blowing faculty of big spirited bohemians and teachers (go to THANK YOU's). I also had the opportunity to assist and teach with renegade yogi, Patrick Creelman (Anusara certified/ founder of Neoalpine with Stephen Thomas/and pretty much the inspiration for why Pure Yoga Asia happened) with whom I shared many a sweaty mat with, on many a Saturday morning amidst the HK student body, twenty stories above Wyndham Street: moving, chanting and laughing. In 2003,I studied in Thailand with Paul Dallaghan, authorized Ashtangi who guided us through Pattabis Jois' method of Hatha Yoga and traditional yogic studies, as well as Sri Tiwari Ji -- our kind grandfather, pranayama master and teacher of teachers. My other influences include my mom, dad and sister -- all school teachers and some of the best, Paige Faraci who took me under her graceful wing in Asia, Kristin Campbell who dazzles us all in Whistler, Ana Forrest, Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, Carlos Pomeda, John Friend and many others in the Vancouver community. It is difficult for me to pledge my devotion to only one guru or school as there are so many that I respect and continue to learn from.
