They had a sound that was somewhat similar to the Impressions, but were unfortunate enough to have signed with Curtom before the label had national distribution, and the single never got the play it should have. A year after leaving Curtom, they hit for the Metromedia label with a huge single called "Color Him Father," which became a Top Ten R&B and pop hit, just missing number one on the R&B list, and also earned a Grammy for Best R&B Song. The Winstons were a 1960s funk and soul music group, based in Washington, DC, who are most notable for recording a track called "Color Him Father" recorded in 1969, backed with a B-side entitled "Amen, Brother", probably the most sampled record of all time. Midway through the track there is a drum solo (performed by GC Coleman) which has been sampled and used in thousands of hip-hop, pop, drum and bass and jungle tracks.[1] This beat is known as the "Amen break", after the song. Their famous Amen break can be heard in thousands of songs, for example "Straight Outta Compton" by NWA The "Color Him Father" disc sold over one million copies, and received a gold record awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America on 24 July 1969. George Winston - Rain, from his 1982 album Winter into Spring. This song is one of my top 5 favorites by GW. I have always envisioned a passing storm with four parts: I: Calm before the storm (0:18). II: Storm approaching (3:06). III: Rain above (5:42). IV: Calm after the storm (8:08). Song was played at dusk... so it gets a bit darker from begining to end. I learned by ear. Parts II and III I learned maybe 10 or so years ago. But had to learn parts I and IV from scratch recently. The left hand in the beginning of part I, and all of part IV were initially difficult for me by ear. But watching/listening to GW's version on YT helped :) Once I saw the pattern, I was able to pick it up. The song as a whole is not exact to the original. Enjoy. Happy Holidays.

If you are lucky enough to have ever encountered Winston Shepard, then you can vouch for me when I say that he defines one of a kind.
