Lyrics: I remember her there, with the sun in her hair A powder blue sky up above Its the picture I carry right next to my heart in my pocket a lock of her hair In the end, each man rests alone Row upon row upon row Remember my comrades, my friends and the foe All buried neath columns of stone We raise up the flag as we shoot through the haze Sing to bravery, glory and pain But the banners are tattered And glory a matter of living just one extra day My dear theres nothing here But blood and death and the fear Remember my comrades, my friends and the foe All buried neath columns of stone When theres nothing to fight for To lose or to die for Perhaps, Ill make my way home But the distance from here spans fields soaked with tears I fear there may be no return In the end, each man rests alone Row upon row upon row Remember my comrades, my friends and the foe All buried neath columns of stone I dream of her there, with the sun in her hair A powder blue sky up above But even my dreams, are shattered it seems By the rolling thunder of guns My dear theres nothing here But blood and death and the fear Remember my comrades, my friends and the foe All buried neath columns of stone The Battle of Passchendaele, or Third Battle of Ypres was one of the major battles of World War I. Why World War 1 sucked

I made this video for history class when we were studying WW1. It's supposed to show how pointless trench warfare was, but in reality its just an excuse to watch stick figures blow each other to bits with automatic weapons. Enjoy.

World War One - Tanks

A video with footage of World War One tanks and the men who worked along-side with them. This video has taken many forms. It first had narration and then it had written facts, but both of these didn't seem to work. The music also went through several different directions with no pleasing results. Yes we know it still isn't the best it can be but forget about the music and just enjoy this rare and intresting footage.

Rare WW1 Naval Sea Battle

I specialize in rare and hard to find footage. As a lifelong historian its a rare jewel indeed to find footage like this. Very few have seen much footage of WW1 at all, much less a naval battle. Some of the footage is apparently from gunnery testing but some of it is from battle and most are WW1 ships. For those that like to argue otherwise, note that the BBC considers this battle footage. Enjoy!!

The Reality of World War One

From: hvg.heinemann.co.uk Scenes of fighting in World War I and commentary from a war veteran; troops march over the crest of a hill, machine gun fires from a fortified bunker, soldiers struggle across 'no man's land', soldiers fall to the ground as others advance, shells explode around soldiers throwing them to the ground, soldiers fire rifles over the edge of a trench, soldiers jump down into the safety of the trenches, wrapped corpses are carried off the battlefield, a veteran remembers the experience of being dug out of the mud after being shelled, soldiers running along trenches, across open fields with mortar fire exploding around them, using damaged buildings as cover, loading and firing large artillery guns, horses and cavalry used to move the large artillery, troops going over the top into battle, a body left dead on the ground.

World War One. War Heroes Song.

World War One. 1914 to 1918 The First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) was the main expeditionary force of the Australian Army during World War One. It was formed from August 15, 1914, following Britain's declaration of war on Germany. Known at the time as the AIF, it is today referred to as the 1st AIF to distinguish from the 2nd AIF which was raised during World War II. The 1st AIF included the Australian Flying Corps, which was later renamed the Royal Australian Air Force. The 1st AIF was a purely volunteer force for the duration of the war. In Australia, two referendums on conscription were defeated, thereby preserving the volunteer status but stretching the AIF's reserves towards the end of the war. A total of 331814 Australians were sent overseas to serve as part of the AIF, which represented 13% of the male population. Of these, 18% (61859) were killed. The casualty rate (killed or wounded) was 64%. About 2100 women served with the 1st AIF, mainly as nurses. Close to 20% of those who served in the 1st AIF had been born in the United Kingdom but all enlistments had to occur in Australia (there were a few exceptions). As a volunteer force, all units were demobilized at the end of the war. Originally the Australian government pledged to supply 20000 men organised as one infantry division and one light horse brigade plus supporting units. By the end of the war, the 1st AIF comprised 5 infantry divisions and the most part of 2 mounted divisions. The 1st AIF was ...

World War 1 Aircraft - Sopwith Camel F.1

The date of this film is not made clear on the canister, but I'm guessing it's from the middle of spring in 1917. The planes are from No. 45 Squadron, so mid-1917 should be just about right. Well, where to begin. The Sopwith Camel is probably one of the most famous British fighters of the war, in addition to the SE5a simply because it was one of their first superior fighters of the war. Introduced in 1916, it replaced its older sibling, the Sopwith Pup, almost entirely by early July 1917. It remained popular throughout the entire war, although the SE5a started replacing it as the standard by August 1918. There were several versions built during the course of the war, but the one most people have heard of in accounts of the Great War or seen on film is the F.1 version (and it's the one you're seeing right now, lol). The Camel was dreaded by most Entente pilots, however. It was fast and maneuverable, but the upper wing had numerous problems and tendencies to shear off entirely and plunge the airframe into the ground (and this caused the death of many pilots), and torque was so great to the left side of the plane that it was sometimes rendered unflyable altogether. It was dangerous for both novice and seasoned pilots to fly, any many died trying to tame the beast. There's only something like seven or eight authentic Camels left in the world today, most of which are in Australia (I know that England has one and I think Canada also has one). WW1 Battle of the Somme 1916 (The Pals Battalions)

Taken from (The First World War.com) A phenomenon of the First World War, Britain's so-called Pals' Battalions arose purely from the country's unsatiated requirement for men to despatch to the various British battlefronts around the globe. Britain was alone among the major European powers in 1914 in not having in place - or rapidly adopting - a system of conscription. Not only was popular sentiment against mandatory military service, mainstream political opinion was yet to conclude the inadequacy of a purely voluntary system of recruitment (advocated by leading figures such as Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey). Various methods were adopted as a means of encouraging men to enlist with the armed services during the war's early years, including the 1915 Derby Scheme; while successful in their own limited way none could ensure a constant supply of human material. Consequently conscription was finally embraced in January 1916 (and was progressively extended until, in April 1918, men aged from 18 to 51 were liable to be called up). Before conscription however; before the Derby Scheme; indeed in the first weeks of the war in August 1914 Lord Derby encouraged the notion (initially suggested by Sir Henry Rawlinson) of encouraging whole towns and villages to sign up with the promise that they should also serve together: in short, sanctioning the establishment of Pals' (or Chums') Battalions. Wildly popular from the outset - and boosted by a highly publicised poster campaign led by ...

WW1 Narrow gauge train lines in France - World War One - Historic Steam Trains

During World War One the allies needed to construct railways throughout France to help move men and supplies. The quickest method available was to construct a network of two foot (60cm) narrow gauge lines. First we see Army personel laying the sleepers and track, ballasting work, loading and laying of pre-built trackwork. Next we take a ride on the train and see scenes of the railway in action as the little trains trundle along country lanes and through the town streets. The film ends with scenes of the train taking soldiers towards the front lines. After the war the lines were abandoned and most of the locomotives and rollingstock simply left where they were last used.

Shell Shock Victim (WW1)

Shell Shock Victim (WW1). Disturbing footage of the effects of shell shock. Filmed during World War 1, this remarkable film shows a traumatised soldier staggering and hardly able to walk however after treatment, the man is transformed and confidently walks towards the camera. Seale Hayne in Devon was a military hospital which played an incredible role in curing shell shock victims during The Great War. At the time, most shell shock victims were treated harshly and with little sympathy as their symptoms were not understood and seen as a sign of weakness. So instead of receiving proper care, many victims endured more trauma with treatments such as solitary confinement or electric shock therapy. However, one doctor called Arthur Hurst believed he could cure every shell shock victim. He took them to Seale Hayne which was deep in the Devon countryside and there he used revolutionary treatments such as hypnosis, persuasion, massage and dietary treatments to cure his patients. In fact 90% of Hurst's patients were cured in one session. Québec History 25 - WW1 Conscription Crisis

Québec a Nation History part 25 - WW1 Conscription Crisis of 1917 Relatively few francophones volunteered. The experience of the first contingent suggested that they could expect nothing but ill treatment as French-speaking Catholics in English-speaking battalions filled with what they perceived as mostly Protestant men and officers, unable to communicate with them and imbued with the spirit underlying Regulation 17. Young French Canadians seeking to serve, chose, instead, the few traditional "French" regiments of the militia, such as Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, where barracks life was in French and only the command language was in English. They had to be turned away, because the minister of militia and his subordinates were obstinate in their refusal to mobilize these traditionally French regiments or to create new ones. However, the government continued to raise its expectations for volunteers, aiming for 150000 men by 1915. English Canadians did not believe that French Canada was providing a fair share to the war effort. There have been many reasons proposed for the lack of volunteers from Quebec; however, many prominent Canadian historians suggest that the Ontario government's move to disallow French language instruction in Regulation 17 as the main reason. Political pressure in Quebec, along with some public rallies, demanded the creation of French-speaking units to fight a war that was viewed as being right and necessary by many Québécois, despite Regulation 17 in ...
