Nicole Seah 佘雪玲- in her own words
Nicole Rebecca Seah Xue Ling ( 佘雪玲; born 1986) is a Singaporean who is contesting the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in the 2011 general election. She is a member of the opposition National Solidarity Party (NSP), and an executive at Starcom MediaVest Group. The press nicknamed her Little Nonya. Nicole Seah studied at Tanjong Katong Secondary School and Victoria Junior College - all within the Marine Parade precinct; and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS), under the University Scholars' Programme. She is fluent in both Chinese and English. Nicole said that her first "political awakening" came in 2003 when she was a 17-year-old junior college student. She had been involved with community work since secondary school and also made house visits to deliver food to the needy. She recalled that whilst conducting a house visit, she was surprised to see an old lady who had a roof over her head but not enough money to buy a meal. That angered her because they have provided food for her for that one day, but not the rest of the days. She realised that government policies should have been implemented to tackle the root of the matter, and not rely on voluntary welfare organisations to do the job. One key issue pertinent to Nicole's campaign is the rising cost of living that is straining the middle and lower classes. May 7, 2011 11.04 pm EDT Ruling party returned to power in Singapore By the CNN Wire Staff (CNN) -- Singapore's ruling party was returned to power in general elections Saturday, despite the strongest challenge to date from the opposition. The People's Action Party, in power since 1959, won 81 seats, while the opposition Workers' Party took six, according to the Elections Department. Saturday's voting in general elections were to determine 82 seats of the incoming parliament; five seats were already decided as that slate ran unopposed in one district. The economy took center stage in the election in the Asian city-state. Many voters said they were worried about the relatively high cost of living and the rise of low-wage immigrant workers. Singapore is a prosperous nation but it remains an authoritarian nation with curbs on freedom of expression, assembly and association. Political activities are tightly controlled by the government, according to human rights monitoring groups. A record 2.2 million people are eligible to vote, many for the first time, the government-backed Straits Times newspaper reported. In the last parliamentary election in 2006, 1.22 million people voted when 47 out of 84 seats were up for grabs, the newspaper said. Nicole Seah - 2016 "The Music will not End"
Nicole Rebecca Seah Xue Ling (Chinese: 佘雪玲; born 17 October 1986) is a Singaporean politician. She was a National Solidarity Party (NSP) candidate for the Marine Parade GRC in the 2011 Singaporean general election. At age 24 she was the youngest female candidate standing in the election and immediately became a target of media attention, which became increasingly pronounced as her speeches began to go viral on YouTube. During the election, she was described as the most popular Singaporean politician on Facebook, having over 100000 "likes" on the website and outranking the second most popular Singaporean politician, Singapore's former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. Despite national popularity, her team captured only 43.35% of the vote and did not manage to wrest Marine Parade GRC from the ruling party team in the 2011 election. But 2016 will be different.
