Yehudi Menuhin and George Enescu play Bach

Yehudi Menuhin and his teacher, the romanian violinist George Enescu play the first movement (vivace) of Bach's double violin concerto in d minor. This recording is absolutely amazing. Both violinists have such a unique and amazing sound that I don't think it's even necessary to say who's playing first violin and who's playing second. By the way, this recording was made in 1932, which would put Menuhin at the young age of 16 in this recording.

Cab Calloway - Who's Yehoodi? (Yehudi?)

Who is Yehoodi? Someone please lend me a hand Solve this mystery if you can If he's mice or if he's man Who's Yehoodi? G-man Hoover's getting moody Got his men on double-duty Trying to find out who's Yehoodi Who's Yehoodi! The little man who wasn't there Said he heard him on the air No one seems to know from where ... But who's Yehoodi? The phrase "Who's Yehudi?" seems to have originated on Bob Hope's radio program in the late 1930s. Apparently, one night when violinist Yehudi Menuhin was a guest, Hope's sidekick Jerry Colonna repeatedly interjected the phrase whenever Hope's gags fell flat. On subsequent shows, Colonna continued to use the term to fill space, and for a while, Yehudi became a national catchphrase for "the man who wasn't there." A short musical film featuring Kay Kyser and his orchestra illustrates a more troubling yet familiar meaning for Yehudi. In the film, Kyser's singer, Lane Truesdale, sings in front of a portrait of a stage Jew who is wearing an obviously fake beard and black hat and holding a book. After the camera zooms in on her body, the camera cuts to the "portrait," who is leering at her. Cab Calloway's "Who's Yehoodi?" (written by Bill Seckler and Matt Dennis) hit the charts in 1940, an especially anti-Semitic era in America as well as in Europe. "G-man Hoover" refers to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, who, in the early 1920s, jailed and deported political radicals, including many Jews. Perhaps the song predicts that the FBI will ferret out ...

Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Violin No.5, F major, op.24 " Spring" ll.Adagio molto expressivo lll.Schezo allegro molto Wilhelm Kempff (Pianist, Composer, Arranger) Biography (See Yehudi Menuhin's biography in part 1) Wilhelm Kempff (1895 - 1991) was a German pianist and composer. He studied in Berlin and Potsdam. He toured widely throughout contintental Europe and much of the rest of the world, but did not make his first London appearance until 1951, and did not play in New York until 1964. He gave his last public performance in Paris in 1981 and died in Positano, Italy at the age of 95. Considered one of the greatest pianists of 20th century, Wilhelm Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Schumann, J. Brahms, Schubert, Mozart, JS Bach, F. Liszt, Chopin and particularly, of Lv Beethoven. He recorded over a period of some sixty years. Kempff was among the first to record the complete sonatas of F. Schubert long before these works became popular. He also recorded two celebrated sets of the complete Beethoven sonatas, one in mono and the other in early stereo. He also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Y. Menuhin. In 1957 Kempff began to give an annual Beethoven interpretation course in his villa in Positano. Six years after his death, friend and former student John O'Conor took over the course.
