'US played right into Al-Qaeda hands in Yemen'

In Yemen the US is siding with the government, with its troops providing targeting data to fight Al-Qaeda - which some already dubbed an escalation of America's clandestine war in the country. Government forces used heavy artillery and warplanes to pound Al-Qaeda positions in the south of the country, killing at least 29 militants. Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have taken over several towns in the past year, forcing out troops and establishing their own rule. Anti-war activist Susan Lindauer talks to RT. Yemen's 'untouchables' doubtful of change

Distinguished by their dark skin, Yemen's 'untouchables', who prefer to be called the marginalised ones, are a caste languishing at society's lowest social order. Named the Akhdam, an Arabic word for servant, they are confined to living in slums and working menial jobs, with no regard given to their basic human rights. Activists and community leaders are fighting to eliminate stereotypes and destroy the stigma that surrounds them. But there is a growing sense among many Akhdam that there is nothing they can do to put an end to the pervasive culture of discrimination and prejudice. In the second in a three-part series called "Breaking The Bonds," Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Sanaa.

Fragile peace in Yemen's capital

After a year of political upheaval and violence, and just two months since former president Ali Abdullah Saleh was replaced by his deputy, Yemenis in the capital Sanaa are cautiously returning to normal life. But implementation of a plan to remove members of the old government from power has proved problematic. Last week the dismissal of the head of the air force, Saleh's half-brother, led to a standoff at the airport, prompting the government to boost security forces with new troops. Although guns have mostly fallen silent and checkpoints are increasingly rare in Sanaa, fighters from various factions are still present on the streets, prompting fears over whether the fragile peace will hold. Growing divide emerges in Yemen's south

The prospect of the forthcoming elections in Yemen is showing little sign of bringing unity to the country. The vote, along with the departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, form part of a Gulf-brokered deal designed to end a year of political upheaval. But there are renewed calls for a separate state in the country's south. Flags of South Yemen have been flying everywhere in the southern port city of Aden, a symbol of the South Yemen republic that joined the North in 1990. These protesters say they lost everything when they joined the union - their lands confiscated, rights denied and oil revenues taken away by the former government. US drone raids in Yemen 'kill hundreds'

Covert US drone attacks on Yemen have increased this month to exceed the number of strikes on Pakistan's tribal areas, a Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports states. Up to 500 people, many of whom were civilians, have been killed since last May as part of the US drive to eliminate al-Qaeda from the Arabian Peninsula, according to the report. But, even after attacks with civilian casualties, there has been little reaction from the Yemeni government. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports.

There are rising tensions in Yemen even though the former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has been out of power since February. And as Al Jazeera's Jane Ferguson reports, the UN is now stepping in to try and avoid further violence.

More children dying from landmine explosions in Yemen

The United Nations Children's Fund has recently reported that more children in Yemen are becoming victims of landmine explosions and other explosive devices in the country. Children mistake the explosives for toys, not knowing the fatal purpose of the contraption. UNICEF has connected the issue to the country's uprising which began last year, leaving Yemen to experience a surge of violence. The organization reported 13 child deaths and 12 others who were severely injured in the first three months of 2012. In addition, 28 children were killed last year. The majority of casualties were in the areas of Aden, Hajjah, and Saada. Mansour M. Al-Azi, general director and program manager of the Yemen Executive Mine Action Center, also known as YEMAC, said that the plantation of mines has continued in recent years, and the minefields which have been identified, cover 923 square kilometers. A survey by YEMAC shows the center has cleared the country of 280000 landmines so far, but are large amount still remain in underground areas. Ahmed Kharshi, chairman of SEYAJ Organization for Childhood Protection said that despite the mines being buried in sparsely populated areas, they are those areas that children go to, to play. He said that mines no longer exist in military offensive areas, but can be found in school and residential areas. It was also reported that landmines were placed in dead bodies, exploding as the corpse was being transported for burial. Yemen is contaminated with mines ...

Yemeni artist promotes peaceful graffiti

The walls of the busy streets of Yemen's capital of Sana'a bear bullet holes and battle wounds from last year's uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh who finally stepped down from power in February. Murad Subay, an artist from Sana'a wants to put animosity aside, and erase the graffiti from those walls which have been defaced with confrontational messages from Saleh loyalists or opposition members. The painter invited residents through the social media platform, Facebook and encouraged them to take to the streets and fill those walls with color. "This is an idea I launched and I hope everyone will go out to the street in the areas that have been damaged, to the areas that are 'mute' and do not express anything -- let's do something and get them to 'speak'. Our young people should be aware that if they don't go out to the street and express themselves through paint, they will lose the chance," he said. Subay received positive response from his creative initiative as many expressed a desire to bring peace and unity to the country, with one resident saying the walls were a canvas for spreading strong opinions by rivaling parties. "Murad has chosen to write over this period of bad history. He wanted to fill the walls with color on the street which was filled with words and phrases which gave rise to hatred, and spread hatred. Child malnutrition on the rise in Yemen

Malnutrition is on a rapid rise in certain areas of Yemen, such as the Hodeidah region where it has risen by 31 percent from last year according to a UNICEF official. Mona Ali Aiash is one of many local volunteers that operate a malnutrition program launched by UNICEF. She says the program urges mothers to breast feed instead of using a bottle which can lead to diarrhea and severe malnutrition. A small clinic in al-Hashbrah which opened last year receives five patients on a daily basis; some are new cases, some recurring. Dr. Hassan Qadri said that of the 113 patients under the age of five that visited, 42 have recovered from their condition. According to UNICEF's Yemen representative, approximately 750000 children will experience acute malnutrition this year, of which two-thirds face the risk of lifelong mental and physical impairment, or worse, death. UNICEF is planning to increase the number of local programs to meet the overwhelming needs of malnourished children. "We plan to expand the network of volunteers, and will try to train them in integrated programs to address a number of issues, nutrition, health and water. The volunteer unit must be armed with more than one program, so as to serve the village better," Rasha al-Ardhi, project officer of health and nutrition, said. Around seven million Yemenis desperately need food, with many families spending half their income on bread alone, and purchasing water consumes another 30-40 percent of their income. Why is President Obama Keeping Yemeni Journalist Abdulelah Haider Shaye in Prison? 1 of 2

democracynow.org - The Obama administration is facing scrutiny for its role in the imprisonment of a Yemeni journalist who exposed how the United States was behind a 2009 bombing in Yemen that killed 14 women and 21 children. In January 2011, a Yemeni state security court gave the journalist, Abdulelah Haider Shaye, a five-year jail sentence on terrorism-related charges following a disputed trial that was condemned by several human rights and press freedom groups. Within a month of Shaye's sentencing, then-Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced he was going to pardon the journalist. But Saleh changed his mind after a phone call from President Obama. Thirteen months later, Shaye remains behind bars. We speak to Mohamed Abdel Dayem of the Committee to Protect Journalists and award-winning investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill.
