Yemeni youth say uprising being 'hijacked'

Tribesmen in Yemen opposed to President Ali Abdullah Saleh have said they stormed a military base on the outskirts of the capital and stolen weapons. Hameed Asim, a leader of the tribesmen who skirmished with troops from the Republican Guard led by Saleh's son, said tribal fighters killed several troops and lost seven of their own in a raid on the base in Arhab region north of Sanaa before withdrawing. The attack was the latest in a series of running battles between tribesmen and forces backing Saleh, who is clinging to power despite 10 months of protest demanding his overthrow and a slide toward civil war on the borders of Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, youth activists are concerned that their protest movement is being hijacked by rival military factions and tribes. Al Jazeera's special correspondent, who we are not naming for her own safety, reports from Sanaa.

Yemen's president Ali Abdullah Saleh has reportedly left his country to seek medical treatment in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. He was injured in a rocket attack on the presidential palace in Sanaa on Friday. But the Yemeni government says he is in good health and denies reports that he has left the country. Later, sources told Al Jazeera that Saleh remained in Sanaa, with a Saudi plane ready to bring him to Saudi Arabia if needed.

This luscious mix of jazz tonalities, which also crosses into funk, rings out as an ode to African grooves and a modern echo of the ancestral rhythms. Yemeni President Returns Home

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh returned to Sana'a on Friday after more than three months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. His abrupt return was announced by state television and he arrived in the capital in the early afternoon. The 69-year-old Saleh, who has since January faced massive street protests demanding he step down, was hospitalized in Riyadh on June 4, a day after being wounded in a bomb attack in a mosque. He appeared on television for the first time after the attack on July 7, covered in bandages and his face clearly showing burn wounds. According to the Al Arabiya correspondent in Sana'a there are unconfirmed reports that Saleh will chair a ruling party meeting in which he might announce his resignation. The president's return on Friday came as his forces were fighting dissidents loyal to General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar in Sana'a for the sixth straight day which has seen almost 100 people killed since Sunday. Al-Hasaba district on Thursday became the theatre of bloody clashes between gunmen affiliated to powerful dissident tribal chief Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar and followers of Saghir bin Aziz, a tribesman allied to Saleh. The clashes in the Yemeni capital have delayed a Gulf Cooperation Council initiative that would see Saleh stepping down and handing over all constitutional authorities to his deputy. UN envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar said that the deteriorating security situation, and the reluctance of both sides to reach a political resolution, raises "the ...

Hungry Children - Yemen

Nearly half of Yemeni children under five are underweight, and some 58% grow up stunted due to a limited diet. What will become of this poverty-stricken state if the international community fails to act fast? "Our daily life is not ok", Mariam struggles every day to find enough to feed her family; until recently a UN program gave wheat in exchange for schooling. But funding was cut, and now the girls must work or go hungry. The West is well aware of Yemen's reputation as a haven for Al-Qaeda, but what do we know of the human suffering? "The government of Yemen, at the risk of seeing its people die of hunger, refused to issue an appeal on account of national pride", economist Aryani explains that the wealthy in power are turning their backs on the growing number of hungry and poor. Decades of development work has been wiped away by the 'Triple F' crisis: soaring food prices, plunging fuel revenues, and the financial crisis drying up remittances of Yemenis abroad. As to the tense political situation; Giancarlo Cirri of the World Food Programme warns: "the destabilising role of hunger should not be underestimated". With a third of Yemen's 23 million population now despertae for food, aid is urgently needed to counteract this deadly spiral into poverty. Hugh Macleod and Annasofie Flamand

The beautiful Yemen

The Yemenis consider themselves the "original" Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed according to ancient scriptures,Quran and some suggestive statements in the Talmud there is evidence of this. In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans "Arabia Felix" ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilqis! Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400000BC (Discovered in Tahama on the Red sea of Yemen). Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today. Among Yemens natural and cultural attractions are four World Heritage sites: 1.The Old Walled City of Shibam in Wadi Hadhramaut, inscribed by UNESCO in 1982, is nicknamed "Manhattan of the Desert", because of its "skyscrapers ...

Yemen:::IBB "The Paradise of Arabia"

Ibb (Arabic: إب) is a governorate of Yemen. It is located in the inland south of the country with Ta'izz Governorate to the southwest, Ad Dali' Governorate to the southeast, Dhamar Governorate to the north, and short borders with Al Bayda' Governorate to the east and Al Hudaydah Governorate to the west. It has an area of 5344 km² and a population estimated at around 1665000 in 2004, making it the most densely populated governorate in Yemen outside of San'a city. Its capital is Ibb, which, along with Jibla, are extremely significant historic cities. The province contains many attractions in districts such as Yareem, Ba'dan and Al-Sabrah. Ibb is located on the southwestern side of the escarpment of the Yemeni Highlands, with dramatic drops to Ta'izz city and the Tihama coastline. There are also impressive views of 3070 metre high Jebel Sabir to the south. Owing to the way in which it captures the upper-level southwestern monsoonal flow during the months from April to October, Ibb governorate is the wettest place in Arabia. Though meteorological data are exceedingly poor and even of questionable accuracy, the annual precipiatation is probably more than 1000mm (40 inches) and some estimate suggest it could be as high as 1500mm (60 inches). There is little rain from November to February, but for the rest of the year there is probably at least 100mm (4 inches) of rain per month. Temperatures are warm, averaging about 30°C (86°F) in the day but nights are quite cool. Because of ...

Here is a "simple" translation of the Yemeni Dialect part--I need help with the Hebrew part (some words are translated based on the way the performers pronounce them, which is in some parts "questionable") Note: the words in parentheses are added for clarification: Down (the hill or mountain) I went To the stream To water my horse-- My foot slipped And I fell into the water. I went to propose (engagement) But they rejected me, (and) my "qat" (a stimulant) And the "mada3ah" (water-pipe) Although I'm the son of a Chief The son of a Jew. I went to propose Carrying my qat and the mada3ah But the bad guys Made a fool of me. Sweet heart and the apple of my eye Tell those who made you Think bad of me: Who of you would entertain me? From the early dawn She got angry with me And went cry-- Got angry--oh darkness (of the night) Out of sight is my beloved. For a year and two months, Never returned.
