l)Abraham Tuschinski- empresario- impresario 2) Jews in The Netherlands 1940s Westerbork 3) Mazel- New York 1940 4) Leo Fuld "Abraham Icek Tuschinski (Brzeziny (near Łódź), May 14, 1886 - Auschwitz, September 17, 1942) was a Dutch businessman of Jewish-Polish descent who built the Tuschinski Theater, a famed cinema in Amsterdam. While emigrating to the United States in 1903 Tuschinski decided to remain in Rotterdam. He found success as a movie theatre owner, opening his first four cinemas in 1911: the Thalia, Cinema Royal, Scala and Olympia. His most luxurious cinema in Rotterdam, the Grand Theater, opened in 1928. His crowning achievement, the Tuschinski Theater, opened its doors in Amsterdam on October 28, 1921. The unique design of this building was a mix of three modern styles: Amsterdamse School, Art Deco and Jugendstil. The elaborate exterior and opulent, richly decorated interior were restored to their former glory in 1998-2002. Tuschinksy also opened another famed Amsterdam cinema, the Roxy Theater, in 1928. When World War II broke out, Tuschinski lost all his cinemas in Rotterdam when the city was bombed by the Germans on May 14, 1940. On July 1, 1942, he was transported to the Westerbork concentration camp in the northeast of the Netherlands, and from there to Auschwitz, where he was killed." ISA KREMER sings in Yiddish !
It has been published that in 1922, on tour in Poland, Kremer, who was scheduled to sing Jewish songs in Warsaw, was the subject of an anti-Semitic riot. She told her version of events to Jessie Abrams of The Canadian Jewish Chronicle in a 1923 interview: "A series of three concerts had been arranged for me at the Philharmonic, a wonderful concert hall which had been built by a Jew and had then been presented by him to the city of Warsaw. When I arrived in Warsaw, my impresario told me that he had been forbidden to put any Jewish songs on the programme. I wanted to cancel the concerts but he begged me to think of all the expense he had one to. He was not a rich man, so I consented to carry out my contract. There were many Jews at the concerts and they kept on asking for Jewish songs, but I was helpless. At the third concert, Dr. Lepouner, a famous Polish Jew, jumped on the platform and asked me why I, a Jewess, was ashamed to sing Jewish songs. At first, I was a little bit frightened. Then I turned to the audience and told them all the truth. There was almost a riot. The next day, Dr. Lepouner wrote to the newspapers, and wanted to know how such things could be in the free Republic of Poland. So much feeling was stirred up that finally the authorities consented to a fourth concert, in which Jewish songs would also be included. The night before the concert, ten thousand people gathered in front of the hall threatening to kill me. That was my last view of unhappy Poland. Do <b>...</b>

He was born in White Russia and moved to New York in 1920. A star of the Second Avenue theater district for 16 straight seasons, his exuberant delivery of this sort of material is considered to be without peer. Ever adorned in a straw hat and impeccably tailored clothing, the dapper Lebedeff had a youthful appearance that lasted well into his 60s. He penned many of his own songs both in English and Yiddish. Bukovina—land of the beech tree spreading its branches across the Carpathian Mountains with its turbulent rivers and rushing streams. More than one generation of forest merchants and cattle drivers in partnership with the local peasantry drew their livelihood from the land. Czernowitz was blessed with resonant names—the Big City, Little Vienna, Jerusalem on the Prut, Jerusalem of Bukovina. Short, but abundant visually, this filmic essay expresses critical historical moments of Jewish life in the city and region, from the first Jewish language conference to the torment of the Transnistrian deportation and subsequent decline of Jewish life in the post War period. Featuring contemporary interviews alongside original archival images, the film presents Czernowitz through native personalities such as fabulist and pedagogue Eliezer Steinbarg, beloved actress Sidi Tal, drama critic Moyshe Loyev, writer Josef Burg, poet Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, and linguist Prof. Wolf Moskovich. In this film (83 minutes) in Yiddish , 101-year-old educator, essayist, literary critic, poet, and editor Itche Goldberg discusses his life: his upbringing, schooling in Poland and Canada, his work as an educator and editor and his views as a literary critic. Itche speaks candidly with interviewer Eugene Orenstein of McGill University about the linke shuln (progressive schools), which he helped to shape, and very honestly assesses their strengths and shortcomings. Among other things, he recalls both a conflict with famed anarchist Emma Goldman and "kashering" a Yiddish reader with a photo of Lenin! What emerges is a multi-faceted picture of the world of a man who attended the funeral of the great Yiddish writer IL Peretz over 90 years ago and who remained creatively, intellectually and politically active in the Yiddish world until his death at 102! BIOGRAPHY Itche Goldberg (1904-2006) was born in Apt, Poland, and grew up in Warsaw. Since his arrival in Canada in 1920 as a teenager, the name Itche Goldberg has been synonymous with the linke (progressive) Yiddish movement. In 1925 Itche started Yungvelt, Canada's first secular Jewish children's camp.
