Recorded on a red Steinway grand in Beijing's dazzling National Performing Arts Centre in July 2011, Red Piano commemorates the centenary of the 1911 Chinese Revolution and the 90 year anniversary of the foundation of the Chinese Communist Party. Red is the traditional colour of China. "Red is also the best colour to show my love to my country," Yundi says. The centrepiece of Red Piano is one of the best-known works in the Chinese orchestral repertoire, Yellow River Piano Concerto, performed with the China NCPA Concert Hall Orchestra under conductor Zuohuang Chen. The concerto is followed by a selection of virtuosic, classical pieces for solo piano based on traditional Chinese melodies and songs, several of them arranged, and one newly composed for the disc, by the contemporary Chinese composer Zhang Zhao. A bonus DVD contains two solo piano songs and a "behind the scenes" mini-documentary. "I hope Red Piano opens a new gateway for music lovers in the West," Yundi said recently. "They may better understand the folk features of Chinese music and it may spark their interest to know more about China. ... Music is the best communication tool that does not need language and can bring people from different cultures together. My new album is an opportunity to win glory for Chinese music."

"The Young Romantic," a documentary portrait of Chinese pianist Yundi - formerly called Yundi Li - captures the poetic intensity of this young virtuoso as he works with the great Maestro Seiji Ozawa to prepare for his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic. Pianist: Yundi Li plays Liszt's piano reduction of Verdi's "Rigoletto" Opera Fantasy, an Oriental piece by composer Wang titled "Sunflower" and finally another Liszt, the 3rd Etude based on a variation of a theme of Paganini, "La Campanella" in B minor S. 141. Composed 1838, revised 1851. Liszt was 27 when he composed this piece.

After giving a two hour masterclass for students at Cambridge University, and discussing the performance of Chopin's piano music with Professor John Rink, editor of the recently released "Edition Peters' Complete Chopin: A New Critical Edition", Yundi throws the audience a bone in the form of two of his signature pieces, the Nocturne Op.9 No.2 and the Polonaise Op.53 "Heroic". I generally found Yundi to be more at home in this slightly less formal setting, and his playing seemed more free and uninhibited than in some of his other recordings and performances. Comments are very welcome.
