Zapiro, a well-known South African cartoonist, is being sued by Jacob Zuma, the president of the African National Congress (ANC), for a cartoon published in the Sunday Times newspaper in September. The cartoon depicts Zuma preparing to rape a woman who represents the justice system. It appeared as Zuma faced a corruption trial, in which he was later acquitted. Al Jazeera has this exclusive interview with Zapiro in Cape Town.
Jonathan Shapiro, known by his pen name, Zapiro, is the most widely recognized political cartoonist in South Africa. His cartoons challenge the leaders of this new democracy. The World's Carol Hills reports on how Zapiro's insistence on political accountability comes in part from starting his career as an anti-apartheid activist.

Zapiro effectively kickstarted his life as a professional troublemaker during his time as a conscripted soldier in the early 1980s. Staunchly refusing to touch weapons of any kind, he was a leading member of the End Conscription Campaign, and soon became a target for military intelligence as an activist of the fledgling anti-apartheid movement. After honing his natural-born skills under the comics masters Art Spiegelman, Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman in New York, he threw himself headlong into the social and political maelstrom that was the South Africa of the late 80s and 90s, addressing the towering monstrosities of injustice, corruption and ignorance, which defined the country during those tumultuous years. Courageous satirist and premier cartoonist Zapiro was featured at Wordfest at the National Arts Festival. At an ad hoc lecture during a power outage he spoke frankly about the current movements to curb freedom of expression and limit the independence of the media. cueTV look into Zapiro's opinions on the Protection of Information Bill and the Media Appeals Tribunal. He calls on people to rally this threat to democracy and raised the importance of arts festivals to society to provide a space in which people comment on the current political state.
