Abu Bakar Bashir could face the death penalty if he is found guilty of running a militant training camp in Aceh (a-cheh) Province. Muslim cleric and terror case defendant Abu Bakar Bashir was interrogated by judges in a Jakarta court on Monday... over his role in the training of militants in Aceh Province. Bashir says the military camp is part of an effort to establish an Islamic state and uphold sharia law in Indonesia. He admitted to receiving donations from his followers. [Abu Bakar Bashir, Muslim Cleric]: "We have received donations, money and physical contributions from our followers." He says the training cannot be called terrorism, as it is an obligation for Muslims. He says there's no need to report the carrying out of sharia law to authorities. The cleric also took aim at Indonesian leaders. [Abu Bakar Bashir, Muslim Cleric]: "God has said whoever rules a country without sharia is an infidel." Monday's hearing was the final day of witness testimony and evidence examination before the court hears sentencing demands. He's facing charges of operating a terrorist training camp. Six followers of an Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir testified at his trial on Monday. Bashir, the spiritual leader of the outlawed Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiah, is on trial over terror charges which carry a maximum penalty of death. Bashir's followers say that their leader sought funds and weapons to support their terrorist training activities in Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra. Abdullah Sonata says he didn't know Bashir personally and did not know about the Bashir's terrorist training camp in Aceh. Another witness is a treasury department official for Bashir's group, Jamaah Ansharut Tauhit. Following a small excerpt from one of the talks of Sheikh Abdur Rauf Safi. The Sheikh, currently in his 40s, is a graduate of Kabul University's Shariah Faculty. He has also extensively studied Islam in numerous places in Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In Peshawar, he has been a student in the seminary of the famous Quran Exegete Sheikh Abdus Salam Rustami. He is a holder of the religious title "Mawlawi" and speaks Pashto, Farsi/Dari, Arabic, Urdu, English and Norwegian. Abdur Rauf Safi has also authored a book on the Shias by the title "Walwalay aw Qazawat Wakray" ("Read and Judge"). He has been involved in the resistance movement against the Soviet occupiers and once served as Deputy Health Minister in one of Afghanistan's administrations. The Sheikh is a staunch critic of terrorism and the killing of innocent people regardless of the perpetrators. Qaribur Rahman Saeed writes in one of his articles which was published by Dawat Independent Media Center: "According to a well known Islamic scholar, Abdul Rauf Safi, based in Europe, the suicide bombing which causes the killing of innocent people is all-out prohibited in Islam and who so ever commits it, well be punished on doomsday."
