PGA Tours: The Golf Swing Lag Technique

Golf club lag describes the trailing or following condition of the golf club in the downswing. A lagging golf club helps to keep the golf club accelerating steadily. In this video golf instruction lesson from top PGA golf instructor Lawrie Montague will show you a simple way to create more lag in your golf swing. Many amateur golfers over-accelerate the golf club leading to many problems like fat golf shots and thin shots. Over-acceleration occurs when the golf club head accelerates too soon in the downswing leading to the golf club slowing down rapidly as it strikes the golf ball leading to much shorter distance and inconsistency.

Quake 3: Strafe technique

A quick clip showing the player inputs on rigorously-developed strafing technique in Quake 3. This is a hybrid technique for strafe lanes dating back to Maphive in 2003, where the strengths of one-beat and half-beat styles are mixed. The first three jumps are done one-beat, with half-beat taking over past that. The keypresses are shown as well as the cgaz HUD so that the yaw angles can be observed relative to the ideal. Perhaps the most important thing in good strafing is to get to the point where you can "feel" the acceleration. That is, where you don't need to see the speed display to have a strong grasp on whether you're accelerating well. When first starting, however, the speed display is useful to be able to tell what technique is working and what is not. It's also helpful to realize that you can queue a jump by holding the jump key before landing. By doing this, you perform a jump the instant you touch the ground, resulting in no frictional loss of speed. This is the number one thing that makes successive jumps so easy in Quake compared to other games like Half-Life. Keep the holding duration as short as possible though, as it does reduce peak acceleration. Also note that pitch angle doesn't affect acceleration at all. I have a bit of up and down motion in my strafing, but it's just a result of what motions are comfortable to do on the mousepad. The cgaz HUD has four main pieces of information on it: — Red bar: acceleration on the XZ-plane, going from negative on ...

Acceleration Sled Training

The drill of the month is the acceleration sled. Our coaches will use the resistance from the sled to help our athletes develop proper acceleration mechanics. By loading the sled with anywhere from 50-100% of their bodyweight they are able to focus on four important aspects of acceleration. Big Force, Small Time, Proper Direction, and Optimal Range of Motion. A coach determines how much weight to use by assessing an athletes technique. If an athlete has a tendency to reach on their first step then they might need a heavy resistance to drive back. The video shows four of our NFL Combine athletes using the sled to improve their acceleration: Ryan Purvis, Scott McKillop, Brooks Foster, and Clay Matthews.

HCCMeshes: Hierarchical-Culling oriented Compact Meshes

Hierarchical culling is a key acceleration technique used to efficiently handle massive models for ray tracing, collision detection, etc. To support such hierarchical culling, bounding volume hierarchies (BVHs) combined with meshes are widely used. However, BVHs may require a very large amount of memory space, which can negate the benefits of using BVHs. To address this problem, we present a novel hierarchical-culling oriented compact mesh representation, HCCMesh, which tightly integrates a mesh and a BVH together. As an in-core representation of the HCCMesh, we propose an i-HCCMesh representation that provides an efficient random hierarchical traversal and high culling efficiency with a small runtime decompression overhead. To further reduce the storage requirement, the in-core representation is compressed to our out-of-core representation, o-HCCMesh, by using a simple dictionary-based compression method. At runtime, o-HCCMeshes are fetched from an external drive and decompressed to the i-HCCMeshes stored in main memory. The i-HCCMesh and o-HCCMesh show 3.6:1 and 10.4:1 compression ratios on average, compared to a naively compressed (eg, quantized) mesh and BVH representation. We test the HCCMesh representations with ray tracing, collision detection, photon mapping, and non-photorealistic rendering. Because of the reduced data access time, a smaller working set size, and a low runtime decompression overhead, we can handle models ten times larger in commodity hardware ...

Cricket - Fast Bowlers Drill for Acceleration in Run Up.

Simple activity combining running/sprinting drills with run up practice. Physically challenging so recovery between sets is necessary if the athlete is to maintain form throughout. Do drill in sets of 6 reps, with 2-3 minutes rest between sets. 3-4 sets per session or - if athlete has a well established strength base - do a super set! In the demonstration, the bowler does 3 different sprinting drills in the set of 6. This is only for the video! You should do a set of 6 reps of each running drill. ie jog to high knees; ankling to high knees; and jog to bounding. The drill is about maintaining good running for in your run up as I find this not only helps you run efficiently (so you can bowl longe spells) it also makes it aesier to combine the correct arm and leg movements in your delivery stride and action. Enjoy!

Running Technique: Roger Bannister

Today we would like to pay tribute to a moment in running history - the sub 4:00 min mile, by the legendary Roger Bannister. He did what others said couldn't be done. Doctors predicted that a runner's heart would explode if he ran a sub 4:00 min mile. Bannister decided to do it anyway. Doing so he correctly predicted that after he broke the momentous benchmark many would break it, many more times after him. He was right. Bannister was a truly amazing athlete and person with an accute intellect. Analyzing Bannister's form we will focus on his cadence. While it may look like he has an average turnover, it is averaged at 197 throughout the race. This is largely due to his height, in comparisson with his pacing partners who are shorter, run the same speed, yet have a higher turnover. However, if you pay close attention to what the clip's announcer calls the "Bannister Burst," you will see that in order to increase speed Bannister first leans much more, as well as increases his cadence to 217 spm. Taking all of this into account, his sudden burst of speed can be attributed to leaning more, and the secondary factor being a higher cadence. This is due to the hierarchy of acceleration; a cadence above 180 succesfully utilizes the body's elastic components in order to move more efficiently. A cadence significantly higher than that at an average speed is unnecesary energy expenditure - what we call in Pose "too much range of motion." It basically means your legs are moving too much ...

Realtime rendering the Aurora Borealis. This is a GPU algorithm that runs on the graphics card, and uses a distance field acceleration technique to make realtime raytracing fast enough to use live. The Aurora are modeled as the product of a fixed 2D intensity field combined with a height-dependent electron deposition function. On a good graphics card, I can render HD video resolution at 40fps; but the fastest my machine can record video is just 720x480 at 24fps. PhoneTouch: A Technique for Direct Phone Interaction on Surfaces

To appear in UIST 2010, for further information refer to: eis.comp.lancs.ac.uk "PhoneTouch is a novel technique for integration of mobile phones and interactive surfaces. The technique enables use of phones to select targets on the surface by direct touch, facilitating for instance pick&drop-style transfer of objects between phone and surface. The technique is based on separate detection of phone touch events by the surface, which determines location of the touch, and by the phone, which contributes device identity. The device-level observations are merged based on correlation in time. We describe a proof-of-concept implementation of the technique, using vision for touch detection on the surface (including discrimination of finger versus phone touch) and acceleration features for detection by the phone."

Quake 3: Circle jump techniques

A few demos demonstrating good circle jump technique from experienced players. The difference between a standard FPS forward jump and a well-executed circle jump is substantial, the circle jump being able to cover an additional 60%+ distance and gain an extra 70%+ in speed. Technique can vary subtly from player to player, such as how large the circling angle is, the direction of the approach, and pitch motion. The keypresses for all of these CJs are the same, with +forward, +moveleft, and a quick tap of +moveup being all that is necessary. The rest is in precise yaw control—note that pitch does not affect acceleration.
