Daily traffic jam slows down Ghana's capital Accra - What should be done about this?

Every morning and evening the streets of Ghana's capital city Accra are filled with cars. Sometimes one would have to stay in this traffic for hours before getting to his or her destination. The situation is so bad that after a hard days work, people who travel by public transport have to stand in long cues waiting for trotros (minibus taxis) stuck in traffic. Africanews.com finds out more about this and asks people about possible solution.

Africa has some great cities -- I haven't been to Khartoum or Addis yet but I hear they are awesome, and Casablanca is a bit too far north to be included in this ****ysis. Accra must come really close to being the best... I rank it bett** than Nairobi on a few grading categories -- traffic, safety, location, pricing and gen**al infrastructure. Nairobi still wins as a business hub as well as on climate, nightlife and as location to tourist spots (Kili, Masai Mara, Rift Valley) Dar es Salaam is great but is a place you'll easily get bored and needs a few years to develop away from the city centre- on the up side.... you are a cheap, 15 minute flight to Zanzibar. Kampala has a few dire teething issues to deal with as the city expands due to new oil revenues in Uganda, but has hope. The oth** contend**s clos** to SA are -Maputo which has thrived off its location to JHB/South Africa as well as being a gateway city for anyone planning to visit Mozambique and then th**e is Lilongwe- the bustling and capital city of Malawi. Oth** than that... Maybe Kigali, Windhoek or Gaborone... but that is pushing it... and i've written before about my views on Lusaka. In ...

Cantonments - Accra, Ghana

This clip is actually two separate pieces of footage of the same stretch of road, and in both cases in the same order (the first 1:10 is the first section, the remaining footage is of a different day)....... The footage (in both cases) shows 2nd Circular Road in the Cantonments district of Accra. The intersection at the traffic lights is with Giffard Road, which the taxi travels onwards. North of the intersection the road is named Airport By-pass Road, and as the vehicle travels, there is a white brick wall which is part of the airport property, and in the later stages of the clip, I try to focus in on the buildings of Kotoka International Airport. Along this stretch of road, there is a lot of construction occuring - in 2007, when this footage was filmed, the office complex "Una Home" was completed and can be seen, but most of the other buildings in the area (which are now completed) were under construction. It is in this area that Accra's second major shopping mall has been constructed, as is the new Holiday Inn. This stretch of road is busy at the time this is taken, towards peak hour traffic, but it is often seen as an alternative to Liberation Road, which it runs parallel to before meeting just south of Tetteh Quarshie Circle. Accra, Ghana Trip

I had an amazing opportunity to pick up a 5 day Africa trip. It's amazing that traveling even to the other side of the world how small our world really is. I started talking to a passenger and long story short we knew the same people! He invited me to come by the radio station that he runs and to go to church with him on Sunday. When would I ever get to go to church in Africa again?! I couldn't pass up that opportunity. So the first day we kinda just chilled since we had worked all night and the second day we fly out and do a turn to Lagos and back so that day was pretty much taken up. I however still had 2 full days to experience a little of what Accra had to offer. Saturday we crammed in a small car and took turns sitting in the middle seat on the hump. We drove a few hours outside of Accra which to me was some of the most interesting part of the tour. Just seeing how people live in the small villages was so incredible. Everyone should experience that. We drove to Cape Coast Castle which was originally built by the Swedes to trade and then conquered by the English who eventually used it as a slave trade dungeon. Now it is a museum. Its a very interesting tour. We also visited the Elmina Castle as well. After that we rode to a restaurant that sits on top of a swamp and you can see crocodiles sunbathing while you eat. It was pretty awesome. Then we headed out to Kakum Rainforest where we did the bridge tour. There are apparently some cool animals that live there but we ...

Kwame Nkrumah - Independence Speech (Colour) - Accra, 6th March 1957

This colour footage shows Ghana's first Prime Minister (and later, President), Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in his famous speech held on the old Accra Polo Grounds in the early hours of the 6th of March 1957, after British colonial rule ended, and the new nation of Ghana was proclaimed. Nkrumah had actually been Prime Minister under colonial rule since March 1951 after his release from detention. He declared himself "President for life", and increasingly became despotic, declaring a one-party political system. However, he was overthrown on the 24th of February 1966, when, elements of the Ghana Army led a coup d'etat while Nkrumah was on a state visit to PR China, owing to a climate of steadily declining political & economic stability in Ghana that had occured throughout the 1960s, and that had seen it fall from one of the richest countries in Africa, to one of the poorest. Nontheless, Nkrumah is a national hero to Ghanaians today, and is one of the historicl greatest names in the pan-African movement, despite arguably being a better political activist than political leader. Most Ghanaians remember Nkrumah for his role in gaining independence, and some of the major post-independent projects he undertook, particularly in the first half of his rule, prior to the period where the country was on a political & economic slide. Amazingly, despite the new military regime restoring much of Ghana's stability, and vastly improving it's economy from disaster, to many Ghanaians, this regime is ...
