Acholi (also Acoli) is an ethnic group from the districts of Gulu, Amuru, Kitgum and Pader in northern Uganda (an area commonly referred to as Acholiland), and Magwe County in southern Sudan. The 1991 Uganda census counted 746796 Acholi; a further 45000 Acholi live outside of Uganda. The Acholi language is a Western Nilotic language, classified as Luo, and is mutually intelligible with Lango and other Luo languages. The Song of Lawino, one of the most successful African literary works, was written by Okot p'Bitek in Acholi, and later translated to English. Mon Pi Dong Lobo is a performance troupe based in Gulu, northern Uganda. I have known them since 2006; this video was taken in 2011. The leaders are all women politicians widowed during the northern Ugandan war. They use Acholi traditional music, dance, and drama to convey important development messages to residents of Gulu town and the surrounding villages.

As peace and stability in northern Uganda become real, efforts toward recovery and development are taking center stage. The Acholi region has woken up to a critical moment of transition that requires a reawakening of societal values and norms that used to bring people together and foster unity. Sensing an an opportunity to reestablish its relationships with communities it serves, the Lira Palwo sub-county leadership with support from with USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives organized a gala to celebrate the richness and diversity of Acholi culture and rekindle the pride and spirit of the people.
