Ball Tracking - Active Vision


This project is a part of the MEng Robotics degree at the University of Reading and is about a robot that is supposed to track the ball and bat it back. Ultimately it is supposed to play table tennis. The tracking is both shape and color based and the control of the motors is achieved trough an xPC target.

Temporal Dithering of Illumination for Fast Shape Acquisition - ECCV08 & CVPR09


Active vision techniques use programmable light sources, such as projectors, whose intensities can be controlled over space and time. We present a broad framework for fast active vision using Digital Light Processing (DLP) projectors. The digital micromirror array (DMD) in a DLP projector is capable of switching mirrors ``on'' and ``off'' at high speeds (10^6/s). An off-the-shelf DLP projector, however, effectively operates at much lower rates (30-60Hz) by emitting smaller intensities that are integrated over time by a sensor (eye or camera) to produce the desired brightness value. Our key idea is to exploit this ``temporal dithering'' of illumination, as observed by a high-speed camera. The dithering encodes each brightness value uniquely and may be used in conjunction with virtually any active vision technique. In this video, we demonstrate fast range finding using structured light projection.

Object recognition and localization while tracking and mapping: ISMAR 2009 video


ISMAR 2009 submission video. This work extends the PTAMM system to allow multiple objects to be recognized and localized within multiple maps. As the user explores, the system automatically recognizes, reconstructs and localizes known objects. AR relating to the objects is shown on the user's display.
