The Story of Adam and Eve part 2/4
Taking the story of Adam and Eve literally creates tremendous scientific and cultural issues for society. However, reading it is a MYTH allows us to find new and meaningful interpretations that can be better applied to our lives. There is much beneath the surface of this story, and that is precisely the nature of myth. By myth, I dont mean a lie, or something thats false that holds no value. Myths are stories that reveal fundamental realities and insights about human nature, as a particular society perceives them. In this video, I attempt to give some background to the story of Adam & Eve, focusing on most of chapter 3 of genesis. I attempt to take into consideration the original Hebrew as well as common themes running through the narrative. This is the second part in a three part series... or maybe four. Part 3 will look at the expulsion from Eden and the story of Cain and Abel. PLEASE NOTE: although much of this material is taken from serious sources in the study of biblical literature, I have paraphrased much of its meaning in order to hopefully make it intelligible to everyone. In Genesis 3, right after Adam and Eve sin, they hear God walking through the garden, and immediately they run and hide from him. And God calls out to the man, "Where are you?" How important, if at all, are a historical Adam and Eve to Christianity? Does the Gospel make sense without them? If the Bible is wrong about Adam and Eve, how, if at all, can one be sure that it's not wrong about Jesus Christ? Recently, National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" did a story about a controversy brewing among Evangelical Christians with respect to Adam and Eve's historicity.
