Advancedbiker - Balancing the throttle

Bend assessment............ I have been trying to find a better word to use on the radio for the action to take when you go round a bend. I have used POWER in the past, but BALANCE seems to be a better word. What is this BALANCE ? When approaching a bend, get your speed right before you enter, get the right responsive gear for the speed and the bend, but on entering the bend the forces of nature etc take a bit of the power off you, so yo need to compensate for this by applying a bit of throttle. Neither accelkeratin aor decelerating. Hence the term BALANCE - Throttle just on. Any minor adjusts in speed them can be made too fast throttle off and the bike responds. STAYING ON LINE This rider tended to come off line too early. You need to stay on line IF SAFE till you have your view.

What you are viewing is a rider who passed his Direct Access test in January 2011 and he hasn't done much riding since. He has NO COMMS. Whilst watching the clip think of four things which you could tell rider when you debrief him. Put them in order....... I concentrated on his bend assessment.....

Simon Weir - Ride magazine meets Advancedbiker from Youtube

A collection of clips from an advanced rider workshop I did with Simon Weir from Ride magazine. He was on the KTM 990. The first session was without radio comms, but I did some commentary over the footage, so Simon could review the footage after on a DVD. Simon did about a hour out in front before we had a debrief, and then we put the comms on. After the debrief we concentrated on a number of issues which we both identified from the first session. Areas for Development: Forward Planning - More in depth in terms of distance Bend Assessment - 'Balancing' the throttle.

Advancedbiker meets Bentleybloke

Users of Youtube meet up in Cheshire to do some Advanced Motorcycle training. Bentleybloke has been viewing my vids for a while now and wanted some advice having enroled in an advanced scheme with one of the large trainng organisations. The initial ride was safe, but lacked smothness and 'flow'. Each bend was treated as one and there was a lacl of forward observation in terms of depth. Withthe use of two way communciation this was immediately addressed and an improvement seen

Advancedbiker meets GoSportsSpex Snake Pass 17.5.2010

It all started on Youtube a few months ago talking about cameras and audio set, the the next thing we are filming. The rider Gary from Barnsley passed his Direct Access DSA test in December 2009, done a Bikesafe course and then came to me. (With little or no bad years of bad riding habits). We had spent the morning looking at improving his observation in depth, which lead to better positioning and the biggest plus was POWER on the bends with the right gear. On the Snake once we had sorted the comms out was his first attempt at commentary, whichin my opinion is very good. A new look on things. WELL DONE

Advanced biker meets a rider from Normandy via Youtube

'Hi Nigel Many thanks for the great day out on Friday. It was good to meet you and all the guys and I enjoyed the run, instruction and helpful tips and advice. I was pleased the weather was good but didn't expect it to be that good!' Thanks Ron from La Tringale a 1820's farmhouse with additional buildings, set in 2.5 acres, is nestled in the meandering Lower Normandy countryside, offering excellent accommodations and facilities, peace and tranquillity and within easy reach of major ferry-ports. Ron has a mate, Roy from Normandy, who watches the Youtube clips and mentioned it to Ron. Ron e-mailed me and we arranged to meet up on the first day of our trip to Normandy. He was wired for sound and filmed. He had never received any formal advanced training before. He did very well, once he experienced the WORLD BEYOND THE FRONT WHEEL.

Youtube fan meets Advancedbiker on a day Advanced Motorcycle Training

Advancedbiker meets a Youtube fan from Hereford and they do an day advanced motorycle training. Before the day commencement we dicussed the training needs and the best way to look at doing the training. We decided to use the following system splitting the orad into sectors: Nearside Position 1, centre of carriageway position 3, with centre of road postion 5. We then discussed the best method to explain applying positive power to balance the motorcycle on the bends. We went for POWER. So you may hear POWER 5, which is applying the balance whilst taking a position near to the centre of the road, IF SAFE. The rider admitted he lacked confidence on the bends. The footage is from the start of the day.

A look at the road to and from Lake Vyrnwy. The road tothe lake from Shrewsbury is a great road for Advanced training and the views you get when youget to the lake are spectacular.
