Holy Nightmare: Koran burning fires up Afghan clashes

At least four people are dead and dozens more wounded after police in Afghanistan open fire during a second day of protests. Outside a US military base, demonstrators are hurling rocks at police and chanting anti-American slogans after copies of the Koran, the Muslim Holy Book were inadvertently burned by troops. The US embassy in Kabul has been put on lockdown during the protests. A senior commander apologized yesterday and ordered a full investigation. Former US Marine Jake Diliberto tells RT this won't be the last time troops create a PR nightmare for America. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

France suspends Afghan troop training

France has suspended its training programmes for Afghan troops after an Afghan army soldier opened fire in eastern part of the country, killing four French soldiers, according to both NATO and Afghan accounts. Sixteen more members of the French armed forces were injured in Friday's shooting, in the Tagab district of Kapisa province, north of the capital Kabul, a security official told the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity. The attack took place inside the base during a training session conducted by French forces. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports from Paris

Kabul Afghanistan Attacks (15 April 2012)

Attackers in Afghanistan launched a coordinated wave of assaults Sunday, targeting a heavily protected district of the capital that includes embassies and the presidential palace, as well as trying to strike an airbase used by American troops, officials said. Government facilities, and the American, German and Russian embassies in Kabul were targeted, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said, saying up to seven locations were attacked. Insurgents also took over a building in front of the Afghan parliament and began firing at it, the Kabul police chief's office said in a statement. But police headed off some attacks, arresting two potential suicide bombers and their handler, and destroying a vehicle full of explosives, the statement said. They confessed to being members of the Haqqani network, police said. The insurgent group sometimes allies itself with the Taliban but is a separate movement. At least 13 insurgents were killed in four different locations around the country, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said. Fourteen Afghan police officers were injured, he said. Another 15 would-be attackers were arrested in Kunduz province plotting similar strikes, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a spokesman for the chief of police for north and northeast Afghanistan. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying tens of suicide bombers were carrying them out in Kabul and three provinces around the country. American University of Afghanistan (AUAF): Oasis in Kabul

USAID supports AUAF as it expands its undergraduate program, increases enrollment, and implements a fundraising plan to increase its financial independence. AUAF offers English language undergraduate and continuing education programs in the US liberal arts tradition. Degree programs are offered in liberal arts as well as market-driven fields such as business administration and information technology. AUAF's Foundation Studies Program, a pre-university experience, brings potential students to the levels of English and math required for admission to AUAF. Besides addressing critical skills shortages in Afghanistan's workforce, AUAF's Professional Development Institute courses in English, information technology, leadership, and project management generate income to contribute to managing the university's operations. AUAF has also launched the university's MBA program, making it the first Western-style MBA in Afghanistan. The university held its first graduation in May 2011 at which 32 students (8 female) received degree certificates in various disciplines.

Key absences challenge Afghan talks in Bonn

The Taliban's boycott of the Bonn conference on Afghanistan, 10 years after they were absent from its precursor, raises grave doubts about what progress can be made towards peace, experts have said. The leaders of the country's brutal, decade-long insurgency will not attend Monday's much-heralded international talks in Germany, saying the meeting will "further ensnare Afghanistan into the flames of occupation". Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from Bonn, Germany.

AH-64 Apache Helicopter Crash Afghanistan "Paktita" - Dangerous Maneuver HQ Full video

News Articles: Stars and Stripes: www.stripes.com Wired: www.wired.com ABC: abcnews.go.com The Sun: www.thesun.co.uk Dramatic new video gives a rare, up-close view of an American military attack chopper the AH-64 apache apparently losing control and crashing hard at a remote, mountainous outpost in Afghanistan. The video, which appeared online recently, shows an Apache helicopter coming into view before swooping down low over the coalition outpost. The person shooting the video, who has not been identified, shouts in apparent fear as the helicopter narrowly misses a building and then chuckles in relief after it pulls back up. But after coming back around, the chopper drops down low again and slams its belly onto the snowy ground just feet from the camera. The helicopter skids towards another group of people, but comes off the ground briefly before crashing again in the distance. A spokesperson for the US-led International Security Assistance Force mentioned the video was taken Feb. 6 in the Paktika province in Afghanistan. Remarkably, no one on the ground was injured and the aircrew survived, the spokesperson said. There was no enemy activity in the area and Army is currently investigating the incident, he said. While the cause of the crash is unknown, former Marine Corps pilot said it appears the pilot was performing dangerous low-level maneuvers for spectators and then lost control. French Forces during heavy fighting in Afghanistan

The French army on Friday October 8 2010, released footage of intense fighting in the Tagab Valley in Afghanistan, where coalition and Afghan forces are battling militants. The army did not provide many details, but said the footage was shot from October 1 and that the action was part of Operation Promising Star. On Thursday (October 7), a German soldier was killed and six were wounded in a suicide bomb attack in northern Baghlan province, the German Defence Ministry said. Two of the wounded were in a serious condition. Forty-nine French soldiers have been killed in violence or accidents in Afghanistan since the 2001 US-led invasion, from a total of 2133 foreign soldiers killed.

Golf legend visits Afghanistan 25.11.11

A world away from the perfect fairways of the pro golf tour, Colin Montgomerie gave a master class in one of the world's unlikeliest driving ranges. For over an hour he gave personal coaching to forces golf fans spread out across the windswept dust of Camp Bastion, Britain's massive supply base in Afghanistan. As he expertly drove ball-after-ball onto targets borrowed from the rifle ranges, he joked how helicopter gunships low overhead might cramp his drive. The Ryder Cup-winning captain spent four days in Afghanistan between international tournaments, boosting morale and equipping Bastion's very first Golf course, with thousands of pounds worth of donated equipment. He told troops he did not realise how few stars had risked a trip to Helmand. "I thought there were so-called celebrities and sportsmen out here on a weekly basis." "But it doesn't happen. This is irregular and it's fantastic to come out here and showcase golf to you guys."
