Soft Spot: Afghan supply route reveals US frailty

NATO's recent deadly air attack on Pakistan has put the US mission in Afghanistan in danger with supplies cut-off, meaning Washington will soon have to turn to other transit states to keep its military effort going. Russia is among the alternatives and this could mean some well-timed diplomatic leverage for Moscow. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

CrossTalk: Afghan Backlash

As Bonn conference on Afghanistan convenes, what is the future of this country after 10 years of Western military intervention? The main issues for the meeting are the upsurge in violence; the transition of security forces as international forces begin to withdraw from Afghanistan; and potential negotiations to seek a peace agreement with the Taliban. What has the West, particularly the US, achieved in Afghanistan over the last decade? How will Afghanistan be governed once international troops withdraw? Will the US military ever completely leave? And was the war worth all the lives lost and billions spent? CT on FB: www.facebook.com

Security challenges mar Afghan-Pakistan border region

Foreign combat troops are expected be out of Afghanistan within three years. But a decade into their mission, security remains precarious. In Sar Howza in Paktika province, a new district governor has been appointed - the second in just four weeks - after the previous governor was killed in a Taliban attack. Mohammed Hakim, a mullah or religious teacher thought to be linked with the attack, is now in custody. But many people in the district fear the Taliban will take revenge on them if he is not released. With no permanent security presence in most villages, the government cannot get an influential foothold - a challenge that is experienced all along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. Filthy Lucre: Afghan drug profits too juicy to resist

America's approach to tackling the flow of illegal drugs from Afghanistan is misguided. This criticism from Russia's anti-drugs chief who believes a complete eradication of poppy fields is the only solution - a position not currently shared by the US However, this reluctance now has some asking if the deadly business is proving simply too lucrative to destroy. Afghan Night Raids and nearly 1 Million Contractors

The night raids are designed to destroy the pride of the Afghanis. Apart from the 100 Blackwater type companies for foreigners There are also 400000 Afghani contractors. If a contractor is killed or if they kill someone else - there is no such news reported. A recruiting arena for destabilizing countries like Libya and Syria. Afghanis on one level are a simple people prepared to kill others to protect their land and their women. And in come the infidels, violating every tradition and value the Afghanis have, and that is the true nature of the war, it has less to do with resources than it does the need to crush human pride. What is the true cost of the Afghanistan war? Narrated by Tony Benn. Music by Brian Eno.

Britain is spending tens of billions waging the unjustified war in Afghanistan, with horrific costs in the deaths of thousands of Afghan civilians, and of soldiers sent to kill and be killed. This video, narrated by Tony Benn with music by Brian Eno, dramatically conveys the cost of wars which are opposed by most people in Britain. 'Common Afghans support Taliban attacks on US'

A series of coordinated attacks in Afghanistan's capital Kabul left at least seven people dead and 17 wounded, and resulted in a 19-hour long gunfight. Militants targeted the American embassy and NATO forces headquarters, before several suicide bombers hit police stations elsewhere in the city. Insurgents stormed and occupied a half-built high-rise building, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades from there. Afghan and NATO forces surrounded the building, killing six militants and forcing several others to flee. US embassy staff were ordered to retreat into bomb and bullet proof shelters. Texas-based Derrick Crowe of the "Brave New Foundation" think-tank says the presence of US troops in Afghanistan merely encourages the Taliban to keep on fighting. UN finds 'systematic' torture in Afghanistan

A United Nations report has found "compelling evidence" that Afghan intelligence officials at five detention centres "systematically tortured detainees for the purpose of obtaining confessions and information". In the report published on Monday, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said torture was practised systematically in some Afghan intelligence detention centres and children were among those who had suffered. The report singled out National Directorate Security (NDS) facilities in the provinces of Herat, Kandahar, Khost and Laghman, as well as the national headquarters of the NDS counter-terrorism department in Kabul, the Afghan capital. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports.

Bases for Invasions: 'Afghans cannot kick US out, so we stay'

The war in Afghanistan will stretch beyond thirteen years - according to Washington's top military commander there. What began a decade ago as a mission to get the perpetrators of 9/11, has now transformed into an open-ended hunt for the elusive Taliban. Some former US military officers are disillusioned with the Afghan war. Lieutenant Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski thinks the true aim of the invasion was to create a platform for keeping an eye on - or even invading - other targets. Junky spirits of Kabul: Afghanistan world's narco plague epicenter

A US-based study has revealed even newborns in Afghanistan have morphine in their blood. Every year the production of opiates is growing, despite the billions of dollars spent by the international community to fight the country's narcotics machine. Heroin and opium are openly used even in the center of Kabul, while NATO says stopping all this is simply not its goal. I have to admit we thought Kabul would be rough, but what we witnessed there spread far beyond all expectations. With its combination of devastating living conditions, poor infrastructure and depressive atmosphere, Kabul made Benghazi feel like a tropical resort. They say back in the day Kabul was a beautiful, rich city with golden domes of mosques, green parks and alleys all around. But the next three decades of violence have surely left their scars. And if during the Soviet presence the city received new roads, schools, hospitals and apartment buildings, today, with the alliance, it seems Kabul is stuck in its own dimension. Pullout Put Off: US ignore 2014 Afghan exit deadline

The decade-long war in Afghanistan is nowhere near its end as the top US commander in the country admits American troops will stay there much longer than expected. Some 90 thousand US soldiers serving in Afghanistan had been set to leave the country in 2014, the original withdrawal deadline set by NATO. Washington had promised that all foreign troops would be out by then, leaving control of the military situation to Afghan authorities. But author Jere Van Dyk, who's written extensively on the subject of Afghanistan, says the war has only got worse over the years. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Afghan president's brother killed in Kandahar

Ahmed Wali Karzai, half brother to the Afghan president and one of the most powerful men in the country, has been killed in Kandahar city by a close associate. Sardar Mohammad, the man who killed Wali Karzai, was reportedly a dear friend who had been promoted on Karzai's recommendation to become a local security checkpoint commander with more than 100 men under his command. Wali Karzai was the head of Kandahar's provincial council, but his influence extended far wider, and he was reported to be involved in the country's drug trade as well as on the payroll of the CIA. Al Jazeera's Nazanin Sadri reports.
