The UN peacekeeping office in Ivory Coast has confirmed that one of their helicopters belonging to the French troops fired on the forces of embattled Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo at the Akouedo Military Barracks on Thursday evening. Nick Birnback, spokesman for the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, said Monday the helicopter fired on Gbagbo's troops at about 5 pm local time to prevent them from using heavy weapons at the Akouedo camp in Abidjan. According to AfricaNews reporter Selay Marius Kouassis, the bombardment traumatized a lot of locals quoting a lady who claimed the rocket filed through the roof of a house killing three people. Kouassi said the death toll could be higher. This video taken by a resident around the vicinity reveals the intensity of the attack.

People of Khartoum about the upcoming referendum in Sudan

After years of negotiations, John Garang, the president of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, the largest rebel movement in the south and the government of Sudan signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005. The power-sharing agreement signed in Naivasha, Kenya, ended the longest-running civil war in Africa. The focus of the whole country for the last few years had been on the first elections in almost 25 years and the referendum was not discussed until very recently. Six years later, in January 2011, citizens of South Sudan will decide between unity and independence . They will choose between remaining part of Sudan or having their own country. Both parties claim that the referendum will not be postponed despite several disagreements on the borders, oil division and citizenship to name a few. The ruling party states that the border demarcation issue is enough to renew conflict, but the SPLM believes that the referendum should proceed as scheduled. In the north, there will be no referendum, but the citizens of this region will be as affected as the south by unity or secession. We will hear from people from both sides.

Africanews.com reporters Reem Abbas and Mohamed ElBadwi show you another Khartoum, with its habitants having tea on the side of the road. No one knows when tea ladies first became a staple on the streets of Khartoum. The size of Khartoum doubled in the last two decades, hundreds of thousands have arrived escaping poverty, war and conflict only to find themselves with no real opportunities in the big city. The men work as builders and do other menial jobs and the women have to invent jobs.
