Mr Devious - Raak Wys (classic Afrikaans hip hop from Cape Flats, South Africa)
Classic South African hip hop video by the great Mr Devious who was killed in 2004. Mr Devious is remembered as one of the greatest emcees to have come from South Africa. Rapping in Cape Slang, the Afrikaans spoken in the Cape Flats former township areas, was one of his specializations. In this track, Raak Wys, he enters the mind of a gangster. The video was shot one early evening in Amsterdam during one of Devious' visits to the Netherlands. The chair made out of used weapons is an artwork from Mozambique from the 'Arms into art' exhibition. Mr Devious was a fighter for peace and equality, and his lyrics like 'Ken jy vir my' and his HIV awareness campaign support have touched the lives of many. White South Africans still employ black domestic workers on large scale to do the housework and sometimes cook, help raise the children and to help make life generally easier. It's the one aspect about life in SA which expat South Africans overseas apparently miss a lot. (Contains interview with Sinah Mthabathi from Johannesburg about her work). **This is a not a racist video, and anybody who connects any form racism with this video, is wrong**
White Afrikaans facing poverty in South Afrikaans
Poverty in South Africa has not only influenced the Black populace but the scourge is equal for all including whites. There are many areas in South Africa, namely Bethlehem, that may not be as crowded or as impoverished as South Africa's teeming black townships in Cape Town, or Johannesburg are, however, Bethlehem reflects the real face of South African society that is rarely seen -- the white poverty. It's even less known after ended in 1994 that there has been a growing number of poor white Afrikaans living in smaller settlements without state pensions and relying on government social grants or unskilled jobs. Some of them even are left with no other option than begging. They are the nation's forgotten people. The growing level of poverty among the white population is surprising but least talked about and taken care of.
