The compressor rotor was destroyed by FOD (foreign object debris) ingestion, and was completely replaced. This is the same engine as that in the F-104, F-4, B-58, and some early F-16s. The "smoke" you see coming from the engine at full power/afterburner is not smoke, but unburnt fuel. The afterburner in these shots is spraying fuel into the jetpipe, but the igniter in not functioning. What you see is 50 gallons per minute of jet fuel being blown out the nozzle. my latest, and last project before I became a Marine corp aviation mechanic was to design an afterburner, much like one used on a fighter jet. An afterburner is an entirely different concept then a combustion chamber because it must allow maximum air flow. Basically, the goal of an afterburner is to keep a flame lit in direct high pressure air current. This is possible due to what is called a flame holder, with out this, the flame would simply blow out. A flame holder's purpose is to create a low pressure 'pocket' where the flame can be contained. It works much like if you were to put your hand behind your cars side view mirror while going down the highway. You would feel a area of very little to no direct wind. This is where the flame in an afterburner is maintained, and extends on out past this point. My design is not at actual jet engine, instead it uses a high pressure radial flow electric compressor to provide the "jet" air stream. The radial compressor is the only part not found at your local hardware store. However, most vacuums have very similar compressors in them, but they will most likely be much smaller.
